BOYS' SOCCER LVVAYS a contender, hut never gaining the title oi lnteracademic Champions since 1924, Selects valiant squad of drihhlers swept everything helore them this year to capture that long-sought-lor honor. The team opened the season with six practice games helore meeting any ol its opponents in the lnterac League. Three ol these games were in Selectys lost column as Coach Goyette shifted the players around to find a winning comhination. Our lvirst league game was with Penn Charter, a team always sure to have a strong defense. For nearly an hour Selects mighty olilense was scoreless, until, in the closing minutes ol' the llray, Joe Connelly, IQS pound hall haclc, sent a terrific shot hetween the Charter goalies outstretched hands and the cross har to win the game. The second league game was with Germantown Friends, our hitterest rivals. and the team mainly responsihle lor lceeping us in second place for so many years. The entire team went on the offense in this game and overwhelmed the Germantown aggregation. The few times they penetrated our territory, the defense quicldy smothered any attempt ol theirs to score. The final score was 4 to 0. Haverford School, a team rated hy the rest ol the league to deleat us, was our third opponent. For the llirst tive minutes, Select was unahle to penetrate deeply enough into Haverl'ord's territory to score and had all it could do to heat oil their determined assault on our goal. Then Tony lVlarano, Selectys diminutive center forward, drove an untouchahle pivot shot past the astonished Haverford goalie. Confident of its ahility to score. and trusting the defense to hold. Select relaxedg not much hut just enough to allow Haverford to slip one past Holllman, our agile goalie. With the score tied, the Select passers redouhled their elllorts and went on to win hy the score ol 4 to 2. Episcopal Academy had no chance at all against Select, and at the final whistle the score stood 7 to 0 in our favor. The last game of the season was with Friends' Central. The team could not get started until the second quarter, when it went on a scoring spree and netted live goals. Coach Vvilhur Goyette deserves much credit for halancing his squad in a manner that netted twenty-one goals in league competition against the opponents, two. The chief reasons for Select's tight defense were the agile goal tending ol Hollman, considered the hest goalie in the league, the powerful clearance lciclcs of the lullhaclcs, Cawl and Grnsteen, a smooth working comhination, and the time olllensive and defensive play ol the hallhaclcs, Lanard, Connelly, and Ashhroolc. The forward line consisted ol lrwin and Camphell, fleet Wing men, with lVlcLaugh- lin and Captain Brigacler at the inside herths and Tony Marano at center. Other hoys who played sound soccer and contrihuted their share to hringing Friends' Select its championship are lVlustin, lVloon, Rowley, and Gould. 41

GIRLS' HCDCKEY EGARDLESS ot Miss Deublerls persistent and steady coaching, the hoclcey team tell into a decided slump. We opened our season by losing to Moores- town Friends' by the score of 6-0. We were then defeated by Springsicle, who scored tive goals to our one, which was made on a corner shot by Phyllis Vvoerner. A third deteat was encountered with Stevens, as they triumphed over us with a score ot' 5-0. However, the girls became 'more determined when they met Abington Friendsy. An opening goal was made by Betty Qlivit in the tirst halt, which was followed by two more goals from Ruth Valentin and Evy lVliller in the second period. Alter this victory, the team confronted Friends' Central with a lot more hopeg however, our forward line was unable to score, while our opponents suc- ceeded in putting six goals into our cage. It was not until the Holman game that the team clicked. Miss Deubler tried a new arrangement by placing Alice Abbott as full-back with Patty Goepp, Jean Kessler as right wing, and Lib Mearns as center forward. The combination proved successful, when, in the tirst hall, four goals were made by Lib lxflearns, Evy Miller, and Ruth Valentin, who contributed two of the points. A pouring rain did not interfere as we went baclc in the second halt to gain a 5-0 victory on an additional goal by Evy Miller. The best and most exciting game of the season was against Westtown, always our greatest rival. The girls had a strealc of determination, since this was the last hoclcey game in which many ot them would defend Friends, Select. The match, while beautifully played, was hard fought throughout. For the tirst time, We really cooperated. The line, consisting of Jean Kessler, Ruth Valentin, Lib Mearns, Evy Miller, and Phyllis Vvoerner, fought diligently, and was excellently backed with brilliant plays by hall-baclcs Doris Borden, Jean Martin, and Dotty Hayes. Fullbaclcs Alice Abbott and Patty Goepp played as they never did before in blocking the line ot the opposing team. At the end of the tirst halt, the score still remained 0-0. However, early in the second period, the deadlock was broken when Evy Miller scored. ln the course ot the game, Captain Joan Ware, our slcilltul and consistent goalie, made several outstanding plays, and by exceptional playing pre- vented many shots from going over the line. However, in the last few seconds before the tinal whistle, our opponents succeeded in driving in one goal. This ended our season with a 1-1 tie. Although many ot the team graduate this year, there will still remain plenty of good material, and we wish the best of luclc to Miss Deubler and next year's team. 43
