BOYS' SOCCER LVVAYS a contender, hut never gaining the title oi lnteracademic Champions since 1924, Selects valiant squad of drihhlers swept everything helore them this year to capture that long-sought-lor honor. The team opened the season with six practice games helore meeting any ol its opponents in the lnterac League. Three ol these games were in Selectys lost column as Coach Goyette shifted the players around to find a winning comhination. Our lvirst league game was with Penn Charter, a team always sure to have a strong defense. For nearly an hour Selects mighty olilense was scoreless, until, in the closing minutes ol' the llray, Joe Connelly, IQS pound hall haclc, sent a terrific shot hetween the Charter goalies outstretched hands and the cross har to win the game. The second league game was with Germantown Friends, our hitterest rivals. and the team mainly responsihle lor lceeping us in second place for so many years. The entire team went on the offense in this game and overwhelmed the Germantown aggregation. The few times they penetrated our territory, the defense quicldy smothered any attempt ol theirs to score. The final score was 4 to 0. Haverford School, a team rated hy the rest ol the league to deleat us, was our third opponent. For the llirst tive minutes, Select was unahle to penetrate deeply enough into Haverl'ord's territory to score and had all it could do to heat oil their determined assault on our goal. Then Tony lVlarano, Selectys diminutive center forward, drove an untouchahle pivot shot past the astonished Haverford goalie. Confident of its ahility to score. and trusting the defense to hold. Select relaxedg not much hut just enough to allow Haverford to slip one past Holllman, our agile goalie. With the score tied, the Select passers redouhled their elllorts and went on to win hy the score ol 4 to 2. Episcopal Academy had no chance at all against Select, and at the final whistle the score stood 7 to 0 in our favor. The last game of the season was with Friends' Central. The team could not get started until the second quarter, when it went on a scoring spree and netted live goals. Coach Vvilhur Goyette deserves much credit for halancing his squad in a manner that netted twenty-one goals in league competition against the opponents, two. The chief reasons for Select's tight defense were the agile goal tending ol Hollman, considered the hest goalie in the league, the powerful clearance lciclcs of the lullhaclcs, Cawl and Grnsteen, a smooth working comhination, and the time olllensive and defensive play ol the hallhaclcs, Lanard, Connelly, and Ashhroolc. The forward line consisted ol lrwin and Camphell, fleet Wing men, with lVlcLaugh- lin and Captain Brigacler at the inside herths and Tony Marano at center. Other hoys who played sound soccer and contrihuted their share to hringing Friends' Select its championship are lVlustin, lVloon, Rowley, and Gould. 41
