THE I932 RECORD .1 F0 6Cy HE rrver Styx moaned and raged 1n darkness as yye came stumblmv and blxnkrng IHIO the realms of Hades Gulded by the yy hlstle of a boat vye found the ferry dock On one of the posts sat Charon h1s long whlte beard drlpplng 1nto the water He glanced at us and seelng that we were a full boatload whlstled for the ferry A few seconds later xt slipped lnto the dock A fam1l1ar voxce called out Well glrls do you want a taxi' Jumplng IH we found that rt was our old classmate Nrck mannlng the boat Strangely enough he seemed glad to see us On attemptlng to seat ourselves we saw that the boat had already been clalmed We hastened to get out feir lng that xt mrght prove embarrassmg lf the other occupant of the boat fwho was snoring qulte heavllyl should awake and fund us there However Nlck sald Oh thats all rlght If she wakes up you ll dlscover that xt s Belle Schoble She IS sleeping pretty soundly but she always used to vsake up at the end of the fourth per1od 1n school Its almost noon now We fitted ourselves 1nto the boat as best as we could and prepared to watch Nlck work for the first t1me since we had known h1m Mrdstream the noon whlstle blew Belle strrred lazlly We pounced on her thoroughly waklng her up She 1nqu1red sleeplly Where am I Baltl more? She was informed to the contrary and was barely able to stand the dis appolntment However makxng the best of the blow she spent the rest of the trlp tellxng us about her last summer in Ocean City Maryland When we arrlved on the real shores of Hades NlCk asked us to walt a few minutes whlle he did some telephoning When he returned he sald that lead the way to the maln street From the distance came strains of muslc Il he tune was vaguely famllrar but we were unable to name the song Soon the players came mto sight a large band headed by two uniformed glrls and a boy We recogmzed them as Jo Connelly Mary Krewson and Tom Shannon Apparently Sklnny was conductlng the band tor she walked drrectly 1n front wav1ng a baton 1n a most fantastlc manner Instantly recognizing Mary Belle exclaimed That plece must be Crood Night Sweetheart And sure enough vylth a llttle concentrat1on we were able to plck out that tune Jo came forward to greet us She was the Ch1efofPol1ce fthe first vyoman to hold that posltlonl and had been called by Nlck to organ17e a receptmon comm1ttee Tom adyanced to make a speech presentxng us yyxth the key to the city vyh1ch made us feel very much at home It yy as later said that he yy as the bosom frlend of Demosthenes who had glyen hmm a feyy lnstructlons in modern oratory Kreyy son unable to keep st1ll any longer burst out yylth Hoyy d you llke the musxcp Vyfe told her that yye had been able to recognize the song is soon as ue kneyy yy ho vyas playlng lf Il hen confidentially she told us that she yy as Pluto s chlef musician She had taken lessons from Orpheus ind her lechnlque had greatly lmproyed It yy as hard to belleye but vyhen Mary sald No foolln yye vyere forced to credulxty Thzrlu sry Q . THE I932 RECORD to the judges box where we hoped to meet more of our frrends We went rrght rn and were greeted by Peggy Schwrnn and Emrly Frne Emrly was judgrng the races and Peggy was watchrng her horse Dave Lookrng at the entrres we drscovered that Helen Ashbrook was rrdrng Dave and that Eddre Meckem was also rn the race The owner of hrs horse Ben Hur was not mentroned but Emrly sard that sho. suspected the owner to be a one trme promrnent ranch owner A shot the race was off We watched excrtedly our rnterest drvrded between Helen and Eddre Closer and closer they came our favorrtes rn the lead neck and neck Then rn one last burst of speed the race was over The two had tred' The vrctors came up to the box to watch the other races It was arranged that they would drop us at the Hotel Olympra on therr way to town and would prck us up rn the evenrng and dr1ve over to the palace After wartrng to see Lew wrn the automobrle race by some mrracle we left for the crty Arrrvrng at the palace that evenrng we were surprrsed to find rt gloomy and dark unlrke the brrght new burldrngs that were elsevs here Ed explarned rt by sayrng Don t forget that thrs burldrng rs as old as the Greeks but the others are just modern grmcracks Cerebus barked three trmes the heavy door swung open and we were rn the palace of Pluto Someone came forward to greet us We could not rmagrne who could be welcomrng us so cordrally but as soon as there was lrght we saw that rt was Alberta Dodson hostess for hrs Majesty She had arranged an rmmedrate rntervrew wrth the krng and we were conducted to the receptron room At one end of the room there was a long flrght of starrs Just as we entered somethrng came rollmg and bouncrng down the starrs At the bottom rt prcked rtself up and calmly remarked Well they wrll have telephone wrres around It was Sally Krewson but we had no trme to greet her for just then hrs Majesty entered He greeted us cordrally wrth becomrng gravrty and rnxrted us to the entertarnment berng held rn the ballroom On the way we were stopped by a prnk toothed lady No rt was not Edrth Gruenberg but Queen Elrzabeth She was just another faddrst who adopted that style when Edrth arrrved rn Hades Later we ran rnto Edrth herself She was kept very busy desrgnrng clothes for the elrte We noted some of the costumes whrch were very strrkrng In the ballroom we saw the two remarnrng grrls Lerla Morton and Kathryn Ranck They were talkrng about Ernstern s new theory and were so deep rn the drscussron that they drd not see us untrl we started argurng pro and con wrth them Kathryn had gone rn for mathematrcs serrously because there was such an excellent opportunrty for controversy wrth learned mathematrcrans Lerla however studred rt only for a pastrme Her regular occupatron was teachrng Danrsh exercrses rn Danrsh to a group of homesrck Danes At that moment a deep hush fell or er the crowd gathered rn the ballroom as the vrctors of the races were escorted to therr places by hrs Majesty s secretary Then on spyrng us rn our corner of the room Alrce hastened over to greet us She was very excrted wrth the announcement she had to make Nrck wearrng Mercury s wrnged sandals had just arrrved wrth a most rmportant message In a councrl held on Mount Olympus the gods had decrded that rt mrght be vsell for a note to be sent to the world above from the shades rn the Lower World and moreover they had agreed to grve us the honor Needless to say wrthout a second s hesrtatron we rushed from the ballroom to B17 s sta tronery department where we rmmedrately started wrrttrng our message We onlx hope that Pluto drd not feel slrghted at our abrupt departure Thzrlu erqht , , . .
