English The English Department, consisting of Miss Di- bert. Mr. Xeyyton, Miss Beacham, and Mr. Slriyers. is concerned with teaching students the basic skills in reading and writing. ln the seyenth, eighth. and ninth grades. students concentrate on the funda- A 5 rnentals of English writing. At the end of their freshman year. they must pass the qualifying ex- amination. which is a test of composition skill. grammar and spelling qophornores Juniors and seniors study English and Arnerrcfm Literature based around theme f man rn conflict standard of yalues and the inch yrdual and lns relation to society French Under the philosophy of the lmportance of a foreign language as a direct tool of communrca tion and another method of evaluating and in terpretmg IS the French Department The stu dents first years in the language are under the supervision of Mr Glll and Mrs Teller Emphasis 15 placed on giving each student the abllrty to read write understand and communicate simple French It is at this time that a foundation IS made from which to progress into fluency and proficiency 1n later years lntermedlate and Fourth year French are taught by Mr Richardson ln his first course, grammar 15 reviewed and practiced so that the final year may be spent rn speaking Russian A course ln the Russian language was first offered rn Friends rn September 1906 At that time, under the auspices of Mrs Kenneth O Walker fiye stu dents beffan the study of this language The course was tentatlvelv planned for two periods a week with half a credit to be aw arded upon completion of the first year Because of the enthusiasm of both teach er and students the provram was subsequently ex panded to constitute a full major course meeting five days a week Two members of the class of 09 ,lohn Pollard and Chipper Bupp haye had their courses supple mented by numerous tutoring assignments during their third year of study ing this difficult language 9 Z. . .
