as eflzau gummdill The year 1949 50 gave Frrend one of the best basketball teams rn hrstory It mrght be frttrng to s'1y a few words about the team personnel Lrnly Davrs rs a two letter man for wfrrd Just under 6 tall wrth a long reach and rubber legs Hrs specralty 1S reboundrng Jake Watiles rs a 6 3 three year letterman As a center he works very well under erther basket and has a good set shot frorr out on the floor He IS hrgh pornt man for the te am and hrs loss wrll be felt Paul Bulwan a senror forward rs a steady consrstent player Hrs floor play rs consrstent and when Frrend needed a basket he was the boy who came through wrth rt Bob Svehla rs a Jumor guard playrng hrs frrst year on the team and has played a frghtrng brand of ball He rs alvx ays workmg hard and features rnterceptron of enemy passes Kerih Clouse another Junror completes the frrst frve He rs one of the best ball handlers to ever step on the Frlend floor When he sets for a one handed Slde shot the score keeper ean usually mark up 2 pornts Darvl Olmsted a se mor replacement does a real Job A team rs no better than 1tS substrtutes and thrs certarnly spe rks well for hrs clutch play He IS good on long and short shots alrke Norman Freeman 1 senror has rmproved raprdly durrng the season He rs one of the best passers on the team and rs effectrve agarnst a zone defense Roger Rohrrg a senror has been steady and at trmes deadly rn hrs play H featured rn the Dorchester game wrth 14 pornts Paul Horner a Junror wrll develop rnto a frne player next year He IS smooth on the floor and has a good one handed shot Lumrr Zumpfe a senror has everythrng requrred of a good basketball player but experrence He wrll be mrssed next year We started off our basketball season by playrng Seward there Takrng the lead rn the early mrnutes of the game we went on to beat the defendmg Class B champs 32 28 Our next game was Wlth College Vrevx rn whrch we came from behrnd and won 31 35 rn two overtrmes We played Mrlford on our home floor and won 33 22 We next rourneyed to St Cecrlra and lost 42 44 rn a very close game and beat them 44 29 Ge neva came to Frrend but couldnt handle us and we went on to vurn 35 25 Thrs featured Coach Haber man vs hrs brother who rs the new coach rt Geneva We wc nt to Sutton and bested them 33 31 Sutton had beaten us by one pornt the last two wears Farrmont was easy as we won 53 34 and so was Exeter xx here the score was 51 28 Hrldreth defendrng Class D champs beat us by 3 polnts 31 28 on our home floor Dorchester drdn t show much as we won handrly 66 15 We beat Wrlber a tough team when they are hot 38 31 on our home court We beat Waverly 46 44 at Wax erly Frrend lead all the way but the defendrng Class C club came close to cfrtchrng up 1n the closrng mrnutes We beat Beaver Crossrng on our home floor and defeated them 36 32 after leadlng by 15 pornts at the 3rd quarter W3 more d1dnt shew much agarnst Frrend as we won 56 29 The same was true wrth Hampton as Frrend xx on 60 31 Frrend has enjoyed one of rt s best seasons haxrn xx on 14 and losrng only 2 games The team and coach are to be congratulated on thrs frne season S performance In the Drstr1et Tourn rment rt was decrded not to seed any team Frrend drew r bye rn the frrst round We played Mrlford rn the semr frnals and won by a score of 36 30 We then played Beaver Crossrng our arch rrval from the north rn the flnals and mon by the score of 46 31 In the play off at York we met Harvard and after a terrrfrc struggle emerged the vrctor The score vt as 41 38 We were se ded rn the frrst four rn the State meet and dren Scrlbner for the frrst round The score xx as Frrend 39 Scrrbner 37 We played the Class C champrons Chadron Prep rn the semr frnals and were defeated 32 26 Th1s rs the thrrd year rn a row that we have been knocked out of tournament competltron by the state champrons It has been a very successful year and we hope that the loss of the current senrors wrll not weaken our team too much 1n future years The World Herald selected Lrnly Davrs and Paul Bulwan on therr all state honor roll 17 x V 1 ' ' n .
