Now as we are about to graduate, These little tales we shall relate. School days meant 'daze' to Nancy Bee, Especially when her sailor boy had to go. To Don Lowe, always so humorous and gay School meant jokes and tricks each day. Bell-bottomed trousers attracted Henry and Hugh, Hughie and his everlasting I disagree with you. Henry was the boy with the huge appetite, And the Home Ec Room he haunted day and night. Gary was noted for his feet so small, His disposition sweet and his frame so tall. Marilyn Gresli was always as happy as a lark, And when she was mad, her bite was worse than h Marilyn King was a fdvorite of us all, Boy, that gal was really on the ball. Together she and Gwennie for two whole years Supported our teams with inspiring cheers. We were proud of Jim on the basketball floor, Who as high point man really boosted our score. B111 Chevalier was always a good sport, In the class room, on the floor, things of that lhrlene's red hair was the cause of her temper, But when it came to cooking she was no auteur Charles was noted for his bashful ways, But he'll surprise us all one of' these days. Dave Phifer appeared to be quiet and wise, His appearance changed when he went out with th Eunice was the gal who thought she was a poet, So she wrote this poem to let everbody know it. '12, Cfaaa ,Maiory FIRST GRADE One bright morning in September 1957, twentyhsix beaming little faces entered the great white building which is known as the Friday Harbor Grade School. At first everyone was pretty happy with the thought of going to school, but when we learned that our mothers had to leave we changed our minds fast! These crying little darlings were: Ruth Tuck Jim Nash ' Stella Lightfoot Roberta Potts Stanley Paterson Gwen Workman Harvey Juel Gordon Nhddleton Clark Sterkins Dave Phifer Violet Larsen Elaine Yokum Marlene Johnson Bill Lawsn Harlene Lightheart- Lorna King Marilyn Gresli Kent Smith Jean Landahl Marilyn King Richard Nash Donald Scott George Smith Ronald Tredgail This year soon passed and on the last day of school we all received a funny looking thing which Miss Bacon called a report card. We soon found out what they were for! SECOND GRADE We thought we were really'big shots this year. 'We sat at desks instead of tables and how we all laughed at the new first-grade babies who were oryu ing that first day. l rilyn King and Marilyn Gresli were having a constant battle over cute little Billy Lawson's affections. THIRD GRADE This year Miss Anderson was the lucky teacher who tried to teach us something. It was quite the fad that year for the girls to roll their long stockings down just as soon as they arrived at school in the morning. Of course we all played marbles that spring and poor little Gwennie lost all of her's in a game with Marilyn King. Janet King departed having skipped the third grade. FOURTH GRADE 1 Oh, what fun we had that year! Mrs. Cary was our teacher and the third grade was in the same room with us because they had just started having Jr. Hjgh. Every time the teacher was out the spitdwads really flew. Once Jim- mie Cahail's aim wasn't very good and he got one stuck on the ceiling, every one was holding their breath for fear it would fall down on Zthe teacher. Maxine Hall moved here that year and caused Suite a sensation with the boys. Other students we gained were Bill Chevalier, who came from Orcas Island, and Henry Gallanger, who was just trying the fourth grade agafn. FIFTH GRADE This was really a year to remember when poor Miss Gormley was our tea- cher. Henry brought chewing tobacco to school and all the boys had a turn at it along 'with Mr. Wol1ley's razor strap. Gwen and Jean Landahl spent most of their time stand ng out in the hall or else hiding from the teacher. Joe Lawson kept everyone laughing when he'd talk around the room with lies. Gormley hot on his trail, but she just couldn't catch up with him. SIXTH GRADE we worked hard that year because M s. Landahl was determined that we made up for what had been lost the year before. During recess we played 'Fox and Geese' and Jim Nash was always chasing some girl up to the cornerd' .-v , . 1. uf-.1 'N Elfxf u 2-5. l J, , I' ff' :fx F .3-ag. , 'Q ,pg- ,.xf'L , I-1 Fw .IPM E v4'. 55.5 '4' 'f ..x. It wasn't long before she had pggk- ed Zane Krumdiack for her boy friend, but larilyn King caused a littlekmoub- le there Cfor a whilel. SEVENTH GRADE we were really a class that year, it took two teachers to do the job. Mrs. Sandwith taught us the first half and Mrs. Crocker the second. Every- body had lots of fun when the Jr. High gave the operetta nTreasure Island ,' and the girls were always flirting with the Big 9th grade boys. Gene Card caused a little excitement that year. One day he was playing with matches druing class and his pen caught fire in his pocket. When the smoke started rolling out the teacher grabbed his pen and threw it out the window--she almost threw him out too. EIGHTH GRADE This was a year full of activities for us. There was the Jr. High Jam- boree, we gave a play for the Student Body, the Glee Club, under Mrs. Epp's direction sang over the radio in Bellingham, and last but not least there was the big Basket Social in the gym, A11 the girls were afraid to look when the baskets were being auctioned off and than everyone relaxed when lr. Wolfley bought Jean Landahl's We lost Harlene Lightheart when she moved to Seattle and we gained that quiet little boy, Hughie Roberts, NINTH GRADE Now we were really the big shots of Jr. High. we gave the play 'Daphne Is So Delicaten for the P. T, A. with Eunice playing the part of delicate, little Daphne. Once M , Wolfley caused quite a sensation when he went around all day with his pant leg caught up in his garter. Two new students joined us that year--they were Nancy Boe and Charles Schlag. TENTH GRADE At last we had reached High School and what fun it was! One bright Sunday afternoon we all took a hike over Cady Mountain and of course we sep- arated and got lost. 'I didn't know about ll that , POP QC? Dear Diary, The date is June 1, 1965. I have just begun my search for a two-head- ed, left handed 'G1llahooper', a very rare insect. I was bitten by one on graduation night in 1951 and ever since have been seeking the 0PP01'tWlilFy to bite one back! I have just set sail from the thriving sea-port, False iBay, for the Hawaiian Islands on the Emily Jane, a popular yacht. June l2...le arrived in the Hawaiian Islands and the next day I began my search for the bug. Hacking my way through the dense jungle, I arrived at a native village, and upon inquiring my'whereabouts, I was informed in their native tongue, 'Bala polooka-ooka' that I was in the province of Soh- lagoo'. The chief of this small village I discovered, was none other than my classmate, Charlie Schlag, who was now married to a hula dancer. Find- ing my search for the 'Gillahooper' in vain, I sailed westward to Paducah Egypt, for it was reported the insect had been seen in this vicinity. August l3...Anchoring the Emily Jane at the head of the Nile I set off across the desert to Paducha. In the dimly lighted lounge of the 'Dew Drop Inn', I heard the old familiar notes of 'Show Me The Way to Go Home',1rh11, behind me someone was softly humming the tune. Glancing around I saw a bearded, distinguished-looking gentleman, and upon observing him more closely, I recognized him as one of the old group, Don Lowe. At the same time he must have recognized me, for he came over to my table and we talked over old times. Bb told me he'was here investigating the disappearance of the mummy of Queen Osel-a-man-deb, who was mistakenly shipped back to Egypt after our class play. I mentioned to Don how strange it was the piano player happened to be playing one of our favorite songs, and he told me the melancholy pianist was Gary Ullerick, who had come to Egypt in hopes of forgetting his loved one, Toddy Duffy. The story goes that on the day be- fore their marriage, Toddy eloped with her former suitor, Jim Nash, leaving Gary heartbroken and unconsolable. I told Don of my search for the 'Gill- ahooper', and he informed me that he had heard of one being seen in Hbscow, theypresent home of Tcddy and Jim. ' August 25...Set sail this morning for Russia. Hitting some bad weath- er we got a little off our course and landed on the island of Sicily. As long as I was here I decided to make a tour of the island. A big engineer- ing project was just being started on the island, the building of an under- water tunnel to Italy. I heard rumors while in the U. S. that a WDNHB was to be chief engineer of the project, but was utterly amazed to find Marilyn Gresli was the woman. I stopped at her office and asked to see her but her secretary-said an appointment must be made at least a month in ad- vance. The secretary told me that after Marilyn had completed the tunnel she was givin up her'brilliantpareer to return home and marry a highschool Sweetheart. Terry Jacksonl August 28...s-gap-ted again for Russia . Took a plane to Moscow after leaving the yacht at the Black Sea. Found Jim Nash operating a profitable hamburger stand with his wife and seven children. I knew it was his at first sight for a large neon sign readfin both English and Russianl 'Jim and Toddy's Hamburger Shack--Come on in and have a Snackl' Jim todd me that he had come to Moscow at the request of Joe Stalin who was crazy about hamburgers, and wished to introduce them to his people. Two months after Jim's hamburger stand opened, the U.S. and Russia signed a permanent peace pact. Jim also told me that Admiral Hugh Roberts was one of the signers of this treaty. Hugh was very successful in the Navy, raising to the rank of admiral in three years. While glancing at a U.S. paper Jim had, I read where Hugh was dating Margaret Tru an. Oh well, Hugh always did like older women. s l , EK-'gn 'A f W . 1 f-,gg ' H. ,. ,, . ' .5 I ,iframe . I ' 1' 'W Eg-Q:r.f?,. January 9...Discouraged by my vain search and lonesome for my friends back in the States, I started home. Whom I reached New York, I yielded to my weakness for exclusive women's shops and stopped at one on Fifth Avenue. Evidently they were having a sale, but it was so crowded I could not get near the counter to see what everyone was buying. I asked the sales lady who said they were selling the new 'Gallanger Girdle'. This girdle, she continued, was the result of ten years experimentation by a man named Henry Gallanger, and was becoming more and more popular everyday. Of all the things I had learned about my former class-mates, this surprised me most. February 2l...Decided to take the train home. While looking for some- thing ,to read, on the trip, I noticed a book entitled, 'ly Dad Was Town larshall', by Eunice Kru diack. She is the president of the new 'Zing King Company',.which is experimenting in the use of a new type of noodle for chop suey. She was placing some noodles in test tube, when she noticed a skeleton of a bug in it. I examined it closely and found it was a dicarded skin of a two-headed, left handed, 'Gillahocper'. I asked Marilyn is she had ever seen a fCillahooper' in Chicago, but she said she hadnft. Being very discouraged and down hearted after finding my search absoluteli worthless, I left Chicago and headed home. larch 7...Arrived in Seattle in time to see the final games of the State 'B' tourmam nt. It just so happened that Friday Harbor played the other winner from the same district, Granite Falls, in the final game to see who would place first in the state. CStars on Friday Harbor's basket- ball team,.Perry Sandwith, Craig Scribner, and Robbie Browne, put on a bea- utiful exhibition of basketball by beating Granite Falls 59-571 Dave Phifer has sure done a marvelous job of coaching these boys since ed five years ago. They have won the district championship four he start- years and placed high in state for three years. This was the first time they'had wan the state championship however, and the eight hundred spectators who atten- ded from Friday Harbor were wild with excitement. lhen I returned to my hotel room I turned on the radio. The program I was listening to was interrupted to bring a special broadcast to the listeners. 'Friday Harbor woman gives birth to sextuplets. Irs. Friday, Wav lf, nt 6 o'clock in the morninQ a sleepy senior :lass gathered on the dock with suitcases, tennisfrcckets, camerass und numerous other items. To start the trip off right, Don missed :he ferry which caused quite a bit of excitement. After makinq two nhone calls in Anacortes, we finally located him in Mt. Vernon where Le was nonchalantly waiting at the bus depot minus five dollars. The 'PiD to Vancouver was spent in sin5in5 every sonQ we knew and eating the delicious candy which Mrs. hall made. We ate our lunch in New 'estminister at 1:15 ant then went on to Vancouver to our hotel. At 'irst sight we thoight it was just being built but discovered the otby was being remodeled. The bell boy took our suitcases up to our looms, which were conveniently arranged boys on 6th floor, girls on th floor, and chaperones on ith floors.'Theiremsinderrofftheeaffera oon was spent in shopping. Marilyn B., Gwen, and Nancy, according o tradition lost their way but finally made it back to die hotel. We ate dinner in the skyroom at Clancy's. Twelve were gathered round a table meant for six there fore thinys were pretty well crow- ed. After dinner, because of aching feet, we decided to take a tro- ley instead of walking to the hotel, and after ridin5 a fem blocks, ound to our astonishment that we were on a trolley headed out of own. That night we went to the National Sports Show, at Exhibition ark, where we saw everything from high diving to a wrestle between an and alligator. After the Sports Show everyone indulged in a ight snack, before supposedly going to bed. The big occasion came Saturday nicht when we all went to the SJ cyroom of the Vancouver Hotel for dining and dancing. Along with a xkkd Ham dinner we had a tonderful orchestra uith a pretty singer, 1o all the bays approved of. Everyone being pretty WGl1-WDPHQQutZW8 :nt back to the hotel, where we retired for the ni5ht???? Sunday morning found us up by 8:00 and in an awful sleepy cond- zion. After packing checkin5 out of the hotel, we ate breakfast and zarted, for a tour of Stanley Park. With much difficulty in finding 1e main highway we were finally on our way back home. Finding we nd some extra time, we stopped in Bellingham, where many of is went w a movie to catch up on oir sleep. At 5:30 we once again boarded Lo bus for home. It seemed that everyone was happy to arrive in ,od old F. H., for they left the ferry singing. 3 4h 5 .v N L 1 'M iw,-1.5 , W if '-Fug! -mira .N a 5?
