30 Years Of Dedication Carol J. Carl6 After about 30 years of dedicated service, one of Frewsburg’s most famous teachers, Mrs. Carol J. Carte, is retiring, as of June, 1977. Mrs. Carte began her teaching career at Frewsburg in September of 1933, teaching all the math and Latin courses. Through the years, she has enlightened students in the subjects of Latin I-IV, Business Arithmetic, Math 9- 11, and English 9-10. But let’s begin at the beginning. Mrs. Carte graduated from Jamestown High School in 1929 as salutatorian. From there, she went on to NYSUT at Albany, the only teacher’s college at the time. When asked how she decided to become a teacher, she replied that her father pointed her in that direction because, “I always helped the teacher who had several grades at one time. When the teacher was busy with one group of kids, I would help another do math or read.” She graduated from the college in June of 1933 as valedictorian with a Bachelor of Science degree. Her major was, ironically, biology. She immediately began teaching in September of that same year. After teaching for 30 years, one would naturally have many memories, and this holds true with Mrs. Carte. However, she doesn’t have a memory that stands above the others. “They are all very special to me.” She said that she has very vivid memories of her first 8 years, and of her more recent years. She continued to say, “Students are basically the same now as they were 30 years ago. Naturally, kids change with the times, and each year has its advantages and dis¬ advantages, and the changes are reflected in the students.” She believes she has also changed with the times in terms of discipline. In her retirement, she plans to clean her attics, organize her slides, and to keep very busy. Depending on her health, she intends to travel, which, in her mind, she believes has helped make more of herself. (She has already been to Europe,Morroco, Egypt, Thailand, Hong Kong, Gibralter, and Japan.) Most of all, she wants to be free. I think most people would agree that Carol Carte has ted a fulfilling life. She doesn’t regret anything she has done, and she believes that, if the chance were given to her, she would live her life over in the same manner she has already lived it. Frewsburg Central School will feel the loss of Mrs. Carte: the teacher, and the person. She is a person who did things for the benefit of others, which is a sign of an outstanding person. “I love kids!” I am sure that the feeling is mutual in the minds and hearts of many students, both past and present. We will miss her very much. Office Staff ROW 1: Paulette Severtson, Carrie Clark, Lois Mc¬ Cullough, Audrey Gatgen. ROW 2: Jane Dwyer, Gordon Sheldon, Business Manager; Patricia Heath, Carol Gloss, Lois Dill.
