OTTO principals Message This above all: To Thine ownselT be True. And iT musT Tollow, as The nighT The day Thou cansT noT Then be Talse To any man.-I-IamleT Those lines are as viTal a message To young people Today as They were To The auThor's people when he wroTe Them many years ago. They carry a ringing noTe oT wisdom and sinceriTy To sTudenTs in a world Torn wiTh haTe, misery, and misundersTanding. OuT oT all The conTusion and bewildermenT which beseTs The young mind Today, comes The ThoughT which prompTed Shakespeare To wriTe Those immorTal lines, and iT gives us a Thread oT hope, someThing To worlc Toward, someThing To use as a guide To deeper undersTanding. You say, I am paTrioTic: I buy war bonds, and sTampsg I conTribuTe To The Red Cross, in order ThaT I may remain a Tree ciTizen7 buT do you Icnow iT is inTiniTely more imporTanT ThaT you remain a Tree moral human being, and ThaT The only way To Treedom is Through discipline? Only he is Tree who is in conTrol oT selT. Are you doing your besT To lceep yourselT menTally clean, or are you leTTing go and succumbing To The madness which seems To grasp youTh when war comes along? IT is our paTrioTic duTy also, To mainTain The decenT sTandards oT living which our loved ones are TighTing Tor, and dying Tor. IT is noT only duTy To our counTry which should prompT us To uphold decency: iT also is duTy To ourselves and The TuTure which should lceep us Trom going wild . WhaT do you Thinlc The world oT Tomorrow would be lilce if iTs TuTure ciTizens, meaning you, had dissipaTed as much as They liked in earlier days and had Tormed ideals according To Their dissipaTion? Would iT be The glowing paradise we all hope Tor now, where decency and democracy will reign? l Thinlc noT, Tor as The wisesT oT all men once said, As ye sow, so also shall ye reap , and neiTher peacefulness nor paradise will ever come oT a Tounda- Tion builT on dissipaTion and deceiT. Remember The saying oT I-lamleT, Tor upon such wisdom should we guide ourselves inTo The TuTure. This above all: To Thine ownselT be True. And iT musT Tollow, as The nighT The day, Thou cansT noT Then be Talse To any man. -5- li M S MARSH-Vice-Principal MR. EASTERBROOK-Dean of Boys Faculty ....
