Defined hy the French pianist Stephane 'Mougin, as the swinging between the strong and the weak beat in a measure, swing may be eallezt a sustaining rhythm which guards the balance he- tween the extremes. Swing means gayety, freedom, a lighter step through life, but it also means a resilience to the shocks of life and a return to normal with strength and courage . . . traits which seem to typify the youth of 1938. This nobler thought behind the spirit of the age is the theme which finds its way into the design, the buoyanee, the rhythm of the 1938 Teehniealities. Mr. Platts, we salute you! COMPILING the memory-stirring pictures and records of a school year is labor turned to joy in direct propor- tion to the amount of happiness to be dispersed. Enactment of the Student Body Card at Fresno Technical High increased student participation in all activi- ties, and the annual sale by at least one hundred copies. Early assurance of funds to meet the proposed expenditures was given the staff by the student body council. To the student body council and to the students who vested the council with power to institute the Student Body Card system, the staff expresses its gratitude and its con- gratulation on the success of a good business venture. It has doubled the joy of producing this volume. Technicalities of 1938 is presented as a canvas outlined with suggestions upon which memory will paint the details of high school days. DRAMATICS The most vital note in the damatics of Fresno Tech today is struck by the rise of the Little Theatre. The very name Little Theatre is salted with significance. An intimate stage and auditorium where plays and audiences can be brought into close accord is the significant difference in the presenta- tion of school plays introduced by Mr. Lloyd Sisler and his Maroon Masquers. Scenic experimentation and love of drama dominate the productions. The manner of presentation in which the plays are produced for several small and intimate groups is toward a new trend in theatricals. The advantages of this new style in play presentation are lessening of unnecessary confusion occasioned by too large an audience, decreasing of Cost, a small and hence more beautiful stage, and the development of seasoned performers. To start the season in the fall, Coach Pop Warner lead a green football team of up-and-coming Sophomores and Juniors built around the nucleus of two returning lettermen, George Derderian, veteran guard and Eugene Sylvester, slip- pery end. What the team lacked in experience they made up in enthusiasm and the fight spirit. EDISON i6l TECH i6l Led by Jim White, the Edison Tigers managed to hold Tech to a 6-6 tie in aneven battle which featured a punting duel between Tennessee Houston and Charles Castanzo of Edison. SELMA 1191 TECH ilOl Tech, again outweighed by their opponents, lost their second league encounter in a night game with Selma, with Captain Ed Johnson showing well on defense. Bob Schoettler Tech end, was a tower of strength on the defense. K-INGSBURG il3l TECH 163 A hard-driving attack by land and air failed to hold down the Vikings, who made both touchdowns in the first five minutes of play. Sylvester scored for Tech, but their conversion failed. Schoeitfler led in defense and Houston again starred on the defense. LEMOORE il3l TECH llOl Tech's Wolfpack, outweighed approximately lO pounds per man by the Lemoore Tigers, lost a dull game with a passing attack in the final period. SANGER C73 TECH ii3l The Wolfpack broke the iinx which had held them all season to upset Sanger in a thrilling grid contest. Smith scored twice for Tech, he and Sylvester provinn an outstanding scoring combination, REEDLEY H21 TECH iOl Reedley's Pirates tripped up the over-confident Wolves to the tune of i2-O A penalty for roughing the kicker and an intercepted pass caused Tech's downfall. ROOSEVELT 4251 TECH lOl A weary and spiritless Wolfpack was unable to hold the elusive Roosevelt eleven and was literallv swamped by a wave of touchdowns. Kourafas was Tech's stalwart on the defense and Captain Sylvester again starred on the offense. MADERA i327 TECH lOl The Wolfpack bowed to Madera's Coyotes in their clasinq game of the season on Thanksgiving Day. Fumbles and a second half track meet ' by Madera were the factors leading to Tech's defeat J. W. Paul'f'Easty Easterbrook built his 38 lightweight football squad around Captain Bob Minasianj Jack Richards, Hiram Garabedian and Jess Boust of last year's squad. The greenness of the Cubs showed up as they were taken into camp by the Fresno High Papooses, with a score of 20-O. A Lack of experience was still showing in the following game when the Edison Tigers defeated Tech ZO-O. , Smarting from this set-back, the Cubs tied the strong Madera Coyote eleven in a scoreless ln their encounter with the Selma Bears, the Wolves, a bit over-confident, found them- selves on the short end of a 7 to O score. ln the last two games the scrappy cub gridders defeated the last year's strong All- County Championship team from Roosevelt 6 to O, and continuing their spurt of victory, set back the Kingsburg Vikings 9-O. All in all the season was considered sat- isfactory and it is hoped that Tech football teams in the future will keep up the fighting spirit that the Wolf Cubs showed this year, Those who were necessary assets to the team and showed outstanding play through- out the season were: Captain Bob Minasian, tackle, Leslie Faria, quarter, Joe Minasian, full, Hiram Garabedian, half, Milton Melkon- ian, half, Frank Cross, end, Jim Stappg end, Joe Delecce, and tackle, Jess Boust, MINASIAN, EASTERBROOK, MELKONIAN I Coach and Captains l lO BASKETBALL Der Mugrdichian, Yamada, Okimoto, Elia. Garcia, Moore, Beaton, Hagobian, Berkerion, The Tech Peewees, coached by Paul Baptiste, opened the season by dropping a leaguer to Roosevelt with a score of l8-l2. Captain Lee Hagobian led the Wolves with six points. The first victims of the Peewees were the Edison Tigers, defeated by a score of 22 to IS. John Berkerian, Tech's dead-eye forward, led both squads in points with nine to his credit. The next to go down under the Cubs in their trek toward the championship were the Roosevelt Buckaroos, defeated in a decisive battle to the tune of 47-9. A l9-l2 victory over Edison added to their list of triumphs, raising high hopes in Techsters. The Fresno High Papooses succumbed to the skill of the Wolfpack with an l8-l 5 score. Again the Cubs defeated the High Papooses by a score of 33 to 27. Guards Yamad a and Garcia deserve much credit for theirtight defensive plays. This victory threw Tech into a tie with Fresno High, causing excitement and speculation to run riot among loyal Wolfpack fans. The final playoff game proved the downfall of the Cubs, the smooth dribbling and shooting of the Fresno High five won them the city championship when they turned back the battling Cubs by a score of 20 to lO. vggsijv BASKETBALL Rangel, Salwasser, Thomas, Stull, Schoettler, Berkerian, Kilgore, manager. Shamshoian, Sylvester, Hagobian, Baronian, Holden. Kaurofas, Caglia, Taylor. MADERA l24l TECH l28l Fresno Tech's Wolfpack started the season with a bang, winning their league opener with Madera by a score of 28 to 24. Tech rolled up a six point lead at half time, then more or less coasted to the victory over Madera. Bob Schoettler, star guard, led in points with 8 to his credit, closely followed by Eugene Sylvester with 7. ROOSEVELT i2ll TECH H97 Roosevelt's Rough Riders ran out a 2l to 19 victory over the Wolfpack in a nip and tuck battle, upsetting the apple cart, so to speak, as Tech had won with straight games, including practice, previous to this. EDISON i24l TECH l27l A spectacular outburst of scoring by the Wolfpack closed a closely contested game with Edison with 27 points for Tech to Edison's 24. Edison led at the half, holding the upper hand in the first three quarters, but faltered during the last. Then two quick baskets by Anthony Caglia and Bill Kourafas put the game on ice for the Techsters. FRESNO HlGl-l fl5l TECH ll2l A thrilling scoring spree in the last minute of play climoxed an otherwise dull game with Fresno High when they defeated Tech l5 to l2, giving them a temporary lead in the pennant race. The last two quarters were rough and tumble afairs with both teams battling for the ball. MADERA ll4l TECH l38l Tech's Wolfpack routed Madera by a 38 to l4 victory, sweeping through the fourth quarter with a smash- ing offensive which completely crumpled the Madera defense. Frank Thomas led the assault, marking up thirteen points for himself. ROOSEVELT H83 TECH l24l Hopes ran high in Tech as the Wolfpack threw themselves into a three-way tie with Fresno High and Edi- son by defeating Roosevelt 24 to l8 in an exciting game, the first to be played without Frank Thomas, lanky cen- ter. EDISON i281 TECH i243 Edison handed Tech their most discouraging defeat of the season, and also one of the most surprising, os Tech had triumphed over them earlier in a season which had proved singularly upsetting and tapsy turvy, with first one team in the lead' then another, in surprising rapidity. FRESNO HIGH l25l TECH l24l The most heartbreaking game of the season dropped Techsters from the pinnacle of joy at the Wolfpack's l point lead over Fresno High with a half minute to play when the Warriors rallied and sank a basket, knocking all hopes for the championship for a complete loss. Despite this end to an otherwise successful season, Techsters on the whole, feel that Pop Warner coached one of the best teams seen at Tech in a long time in this year's quintet, Q3 Q0 h A 4- 'fa 4 .ramp Olv O A'f: ' eat 6' 4 W 0396 r, 4, 0 0'4'+Ab4vQi ' bbfw W J' c Ge, 4 w'f'w,f., w,,'Q,'4B g+4.,fjQL 1-469 W :M ,Jw 11.4 X ff. Cross, lngraham, Minasion, Melkonian, Manchesian, Garcia Fresno Tech's classy Middleweight team coached by Paul Easterbrook had a great basketball season. The victorious cubs started the casoba season by winning practice games from Fowler, Kerman, Reedley, Selma, Central and Sanger, losing only to Selma and Sanger in return engagements by close scores. Continuing their winning streak with the opening ot the League schedule, they took the first two games from Madera and Roosevelt respectively, but lost to Edison Tech in their next game by one point. Discouraged by this setback, they dropped a hard-fought game to the Fresno High School Warriors a week later. But with true Tech spirit, the fighting Cubs entered the second round ot League play to turn back Madera, Roosevelt, Edison, and Fresno High, to win the city championship. With the county title at stake, the Wolf Cubs clashed with Selma High School in Selma only to lose out in the final quarter, Z5 to l9. The regulars who did most of the actual playing during the season are: Melkonian, high scoring forward, Cross, spark plug of the team, Minasian, smooth working forward, lngraham, Lanky, center, Manchesian, great defensive guard, and Garcia, clever ball handler. Others on the squad: Rush, Sprigg, Cole, Sayeg, King, Amer, Garabedian, Harelson, Poochigian, Cullen and Harbick.
