DEDICATION CQ rank Watters Thomas came to Fresno in 1917 as vice-president of the Fresno Normal School, the fore- runner of Fresno State 'College. When Charles L. McLane, who had headed the school since it was founded in 1911, retired in 1927, Dr. Thomas became president. His friendly smile and warm handshake are known to hun- dreds of Fresno State College graduates, to educators throughout the nation, and to scores of persons in other fields who are in- terested in education. l-le is not only well known and liked, he is admired and respected for his contributions in the field of education. Dr. Thomas cameito California from his native midwest be- cause he wanted to find a place where liberal, progressive ideas for education would be permitted. During his 30 years at Fresno State College, those ideas have increasingly benefitted every student at the college by making possible the unique student- faculty form of government under which the college is run. At few colleges has the student body as much to say in governing and controlling college affairs as it has at Fresno State College. Dr. Thomas is graduating with the Class of 1948. After 30 years of guiding the college from its normal school status to that of a state teachers college and then to its status quo, a state college, of guiding it through the storms of protest that sur- rounded many ofthe steps in the growth of the college, of guiding it through the uncertain days of the war, of smiling through 16-hour work days, after 30 years of service, he is retiring. We dedicate this book to Dr. Frank W. Thomas not just on this page, but on each of the following pages, hoping that they symbolize at least a part of the concept of democratic education for which he has always stood.
