dedication To the new student, uncertain about the methods and meaning of college life, the first conversation with a pro- fessor leaves a lasting impression. For most of us Dr. Louis Mudge is the man who made that first impression. Dr. Mudge served as chairman of the guidance and counseling committee from l942 until l9-47. His work extended to many thingsg advising graduating classes of San Joaquin Valley high schools about the need for training in war-time work as well as discussing the opportunities offered at Fresno State College. His duties here consisted of assigning advisers to new students and assisting those uncertain ones to select a vocation before making the assignment. But most impor- tant, he made it a part of his work to become a friend to each student or prospective student who needed his help. We therefore dedicate this book to Dr. Mudge in ap- preciation of a job well done.

presicIent's message This college year at Fresno State has brought its thrills and its growing pains. The boys had come back, many with memories of strange places, all with hopes set on an unseen future. They were now a part of the mingled throng of the campus, sharing the earnest, merry, exciting adventures of college life. Within this book appear the scenes and drama of this year of new aspirations. It reflects some of the comedy, the romance, the triumphs, and the struggles. Above all, it reflects the high spirit of friendly and loyal purpose with which we met new conditions. lt will be cherished as a reminder of scenes and days rich in meaning and memories. Frank W.
