They have watched the change from normal school to teacher's college and then to Fresno State College. Students have passed to and fro for years over these grounds, have gained a foothold in life within these cloistered courts. ' And so to these same campus grounds, we, the staff, dedicate this 1946 yearbook, to the promises that were fulfilled here and to the dreams of the future when on these same hal- lowed grounds will rise the new Fresno State College. Students are here because of a hope that a richer future may be thus assured for each of them. Upon the Wisdom with which the de- mands of the days ahead are anticipated Will depend the success and strength of the college and of those who seek its inspiration. This volume 'reflects some glimpses ot the vision which we cherish for our college in the stirring days before us. lt reflects also the present loyalties, the treasured associations, and the confident spirit which make certain the fulfillment of that vision. Under the second-term direction of Student Body President Frank Mesple, activities at Fresno State Callege made long strides this year comparable to the peace-time level oi pre-War years. Much of this achievement was due to the coordinated efforts of student body oiiicers, committees, and organizations. Owingito the student government system at Fresno State, extra-curricular social, recreational, and service activities are under the direction of committees appointed by the president, or under student-faculty boards to which the student representatives are elected. Democratic self-government, which is the aim of this system, has been achieved with marked success. An innovation at the beginning of the spring semester this year Was the revision by Mesple of all student body committees. This was no reflection on the iine work done by the committees in the tall semester, but was intended to give an opportunity tor student body service to the unprecedently large number oi new students and returning veterans who enrolled mid-year. 5:5ociafec!.S?uc!enfA if .gzwlenf goofy Ofgcem I. They then traveled to Berkeley and although FSC took eight firsts they lacked depth to take the Bears in the seconds and thirds and Were beaten. COP was next on the schedule and the Bulldogs easily romped over the Tigers. . San Iose's powerful Spartans came to Ratclifte Stadium for a dual meet and in the most thrilling contest of the year the Bulldogs pulled an upset by downing the Spartans 57-64 with the final mile relay event deciding the score. On the following Saturday the Bulldogs stepped into the big time as Southern Califor- nia came to town to receive a stiff battle from our men. However, Dean Cromwell's squad captured all but one first and the meet. Then came the conference meet in San lose and the Bulldogs again brought back the cup to Fresno State. The Bulldogs still have a few meets on schedule for this year but they are all away. - - ' Outstanding performances of the season were turned in by big Iean Lamoure who broke the school record in both the shot-put and discus. The Bulldog mile relay team of Iirn Bolger, Ed Horn, Glenn Shaffer and Ioe Shropshire was defeated only once and then by the Trojans. Merle Martin clipped the 220 yard low hurdles in 23.6 seconds for one of the better times in the county. Merle and Lee Angelich were also top high stick men. Shaffer also cap- tured points in the hurdles as well as running a strong quarter mile. Paul Ferdinandsen was one of the best javelin men on the coast and approached the 200 foot mark several times. Ioe Shropshire turned in some brilliant performances in the quarter mile and 220 yard dashes and ran anchor on the relay team. Ed Horn gave promise of developing into a great half-miler and Gabe Gonzales and lack Roberts turned in good times in the distance runs. Don Dorfmeier competed in the Weights and picked up points in the discus. Bill Hansen improved steadily in the pole vault and was hitting well over l2 feet by WCB time. Many of the men this season were freshmen and Hanner has hopes for another top ag- gregation next year. moi Kauai 1 F , 1 .W ,. F v . Twelve thousand five hundred, the largest crowd ever to see the West Coast Relays, witnessed the 20th running of the meet May 18. Another record fell as l,l76 entered the meet. Southern California won the intercol- legiate division by one-half point over the Olympic Club, 38114 to 373f4i Fresno State, competing in the same class, scored six points, but their fellow con- ference member San Iose State tallied 25. The Bulldogs finished third in the two mile relay, withGabeGonzales, lack Roberts,'Ed Horn, and Ioe Shropshire running. In a special college one mile relay, a Bulldog entry of lim Bolger, Merle Martin, Shropshire, and Shaffer, won in a fast time of 3:2l.9. Other point-winners for FSC were Lee Angelich, third in the 120 yard high hurdles, and lean Lamoure, fourth in the discus. Lamoure set a new all-time Fresno State record in that event of 149 feet, llfg inches. Los Angeles City College won the jun- ior college division and Bakersfield cap- tured the high school title. I Don Iamison, Hanford sprinter, won the Zeta Mu trophy for the outstanding high school athlete, and Chuck Coker, Modesto IC, was given the FSC alumnitrophy for the junior college Class. 1 N v 5 I w -fi P :F ix 1 XJ H L 1 'nr F 5333- ! iz xf .LH A-sf' I X , -f if x... .- u Ifl GLIU5 4' 1 Af- ff' , zz X-1' ig'-L M. 1' EK 4 - I If X 1' ' 1 xt. f V-,A if ,glkfiiyz v , H, fi. The Women's Physical Education Department, headed by Mrs. Ruth D. Waterman, presents many activities for lower division students who are required to take the course and also those majoring in physical education. The outstanding feature presented each year for those interested in participating is the swim pageant which is held at the college pool in the evening. Some of the activities held in the department are Play Day, a sport presented by the Women's Athletic Association tor students ot Fresno High School, and intramural sports.
