emoriam FRANCES C. KRAEMER IOHN A. NOWELL G. H. H. Spring has come again. lt is warm with' little breeze. lnto your classroom the south sun shines. Outside the lawn is as green as before. The shadows of the eucalyptus leaves cast around Their millions of infinite patterns. Till time is gone, you will stand before us, lecturing, Casting millions of patterns of thoughts, ideas, philosophies. And we will sit forever, watching, listening. You were all England: literature, poetry, History, music, philosophy. You were the Window to the soul of such things. Your genius magnificently bared us of prejudice, And we shared together the rich glories you depicted. There is no rain outside the windows, Only sun and shadow. Spring holds this spell. Spellbound still, we love you Well. The notes you never used are on the stand, And your roll-book lies there, shut- your turn to laugh- You surprised us every time by name. Wes still sits- though he bears a gun in the Pacific- l-le still sits' in the second row over by the windows, You made him the brunt of all your jokes, because- Somehow because you liked him bestl These we will unconsciously remember When we take out our notes for re-reading: A green jade ring on your expressive hand, Hurried handwriting on the north blackboard: Too many pictures, irnmodest Venus in her corner, l-low you poked fun at the famed, the revered, the honored, For they, too, were human fools, How you dared thrust a dry dig at the devil .... Never with brutal scythe can time erase your vivid face. Suddenly life is serious as we see it through your eyesg We become as sad as age, as Wise. Our gaze is upon you. You face us as when, Tear-dimmed, you feared for our future. Then for the first time we knew- For all your cutting cynicism, your only test of our faith- You loved us, from the depths of your attuned heart.
