PREVIOUS USS FRESNOS Two former FRESNO's have served the Navy and the Nation. The first, serving honorably in the First World War, was the cargo ship USS FRESNO. Launched in 1918, she made four Atlantic crossings that same year to ferry troops and supplies to the battle lines in France. After cessation of hostilities, the ship was decommissioned and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board in 1919. - The second FRESNO was launched in' 1946 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Ruth Martin of the City of Fresno. This ship, USS FRESNO QCL-1215 Cpicturedj had an overall length of 541 feet and was armed with twelve 5-inch 38-caliber guns. This USS FRESNO served as flagship of Rear Admiral R. L. Conolly, Commander of Naval Forces, Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. After making goodwill calls to England, Ireland, Denmark, and Norway, the FRESNO returned to the United States, where she was decommissioned and placed in the reserve fleet. FRESNO' MRS. FLOYD H.
