PREVIOUS USS FRESNOS Two former FRESNO's have served the Navy and the Nation. The first, serving honorably in the First World War, was the cargo ship USS FRESNO. Launched in 1918, she made four Atlantic crossings that same year to ferry troops and supplies to the battle lines in France. After cessation of hostilities, the ship was decommissioned and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board in 1919. - The second FRESNO was launched in' 1946 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Ruth Martin of the City of Fresno. This ship, USS FRESNO QCL-1215 Cpicturedj had an overall length of 541 feet and was armed with twelve 5-inch 38-caliber guns. This USS FRESNO served as flagship of Rear Admiral R. L. Conolly, Commander of Naval Forces, Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. After making goodwill calls to England, Ireland, Denmark, and Norway, the FRESNO returned to the United States, where she was decommissioned and placed in the reserve fleet. FRESNO' MRS. FLOYD H. c ' 'Anno LST THE SHlP'Se SEAL The seal depicted above represents symbolically a number of themes pertinent to the ship. The central figure is a branch of the ash tree, which is native to the San Joaquin Valley in which the City and' County of Fresno are located, and from which they received their name. The ash, official symbol of Fresno County, is flanked on both sides by a cluster of grapes, one of the insignia of the City of Fresno, where a major industry surrounds the growing and processing of the grape. The motto Paratus displayed on the seal is the Latin for ready, the condition which the ship FRESNO will strive to maintain at all times in accordance with its mission. Appearing slightly above this motto is the Danforth anchor, a key item in the capability of the LST and thus very significant as a symbol. V Prominently displayed above and at the side of the seal is the decorative border of antique gold in the Spanish heritage, both of the City and County of San Diego where the ship was built.
