They must be prepared to execute a multitude of mis- sion operations like hoisting and lowering boats, bowramp and causeway marriages, launching and recovering Amphibious As- sault Vehicles, beaching, gun shoots and flight operations to name just a few. Fres- no's Deck De artment has continually ac- complished tflese demanding tasks with unparalleled excellence. The Deck Depart- ments' professional performance in carry- ing out these mission exercises has earned them a grade of Outstanding from Am- phibious Refresher Training Observers. In addition to those responsibilities, Deck Department is also charged with keeping the exterior appearance of Fresno lookin good and maintaining all of her main declg machinery, booms, winches, cranes, etc. This is accomplished through countless hours of sweeping, swabbing, chipping, scratching, wiping and painting and an ag- gressive program of PMS. The RM represents the command by ex- changing accurate, rapid and secure infor- mation with other commands. Their duties include setting up and operating radiotele- type circuits, keep radio circuits operating for CIC and the bridge, operating crypto- graphic equipment and also knowing Morse Code. The RM's process all incoming and outgo- ing message traffic and route it to the prop- er departments. They also provide such ser- vices as Mars Radio telephone links and personal telegrams which many of us used during WESTPAC. ' Hey, that was my pie!
