When avoiding possible radio interception and during radio silence, plans are sent by visual signal to the ships within visual range. The SM's play a major role during Amphibi- ous Operations. Directing the boats when and where to come alongside the ship. The Signal Bridge is known as debarkation control and gives important signals for directing the as- sault on the beach. The ET's go through ,extensive electronic training prior to coming to the fleet and even while at their command they attend many schools for certain pieces of equipment. All in all, the ET's spend several years in schools depending on the length of tour they serve 8: the equipment they have to work on. The ET's work on a wide range of electronic equipment ranging from the radio gear in Radio Central, to the radar and identification equipment in CIC, to the satellite navigation equipment top side. Dark as it may be, CIC is the command and control center of the ship. The primary mission of the OS is the col- lection, evaluation and display of tactical information and intelligence. Keeping the bridge advised of the situation and provid- ing a complete picture for the Captain to make a final evaluation and give orders for action. Operating the radar, OS's track air and sur- face contacts, 'back up the Quartermasters during Sea and Anchor Detail, guide and direct the ship and assault vehicles during Amphibious Operations. The OS's are also involved with communication encoding and decoding information, gathering intel- ligence and briefing key personnel on intel- ligence received.
