COMMANDING OFFICER Commander M.D. Barker Commander BARKER, a native of Ada, Oklahoma, graduated in 1965 with BS BA degrees from the University of Tulsa, where he was named to Who ' s Who Among American Colleges and Universities. He was commissioned in 1966 and reported to the USS CHARLES H. ROAN (DD-853) serving as the Communication ' s Officer and Navigator until 1969. Commander BARKER completed Destroyer School in August 1969 and served in the USS ROGERS (DD-876) until October 1971 as Engineering Officer while completing two deployments to Vietnamese waters. In February 1972, he assumed command of the USS APACHE (ATF-67) providing communications, command and control support to Navy ' s bathyscaph TRIESTE II. As a member of the Integral Operating Unit, Commander BARKER ' S ship was responsible for assisting TRIESTE II in establishing a record for manned open ocean recovery to the depth of 16,400 feet. In September 1974, Commander BARKER graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School with a Master ' s of Science Degree in Information Systems Telecommunications. Reporting to the U.S. Naval Communication ' s Station, Sidi Yahia, Morocco, Commander BARKER served as the Operations Communications Officer from October 1974 to November 1976. In April 1977, Commander BARKER took command of the USS CONSTANT (MSO-427) followed by a tour as Executive Officer in USS RACINE (LST 1191) during 1978-1979. From February 1980 Commander BARKER served as the Deputy in the Automation Plans Division for the Commander, Naval Telecommunications Command, Washington, D.C., until assuming command of USS FRESNO (LST 1182) on 18 June 1982. Commander BARKER ' S decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (with Gold Star in lieu of second award). Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and three Battle E Ribbons. Commander BARKER is married to the former Linda Kay Buker of Tulsa, Oklahoma. They have two children, Krysta Lynn and Kara Beth.
