i..- iiK Commander Richard F. Schuerger entered the Navy In March 1952 at San Francisco, California. He served as an enlisted man for nearly twelve years and was promoted to Chief Sonarman in January 1960. His enlisted assignments included numerous schools, tours in USS REDSTART (MSF 378) and USS WIDGEON (MSC 208), and instructor duty at the Fleet Sonar School in Key West, Florida. Commander Schuerger attended the University of Idaho under the Navy ' s NESEP Program where he received a bachelor ' s degree in electrical engineering In 1963. After receiving his commission, he served aboard USS DAMATO (DD 871) as EMO and CIC Officer Destroyer School was next, followed by tours in USS D. H. FOX (DD 779), COMDESDIV THREE SIX TWO Staff and in March 1969 he assumed command of USS GANNET (MSC 290) In 1970, after decommissioning the GANNET, Commander Schuerger was assigned instructor duty at the NROTC Unit, UCLA and holds a doctorate in Vocational and Technical Education. Commander Schuerger was transferred to the Naval War College in 1974 where he completed the Command and Staff course. In June 1975 he was transferred to USS RACINE (LST 1191) where he served as Executive Officer. In February 1977, Commander Schuerger returned to the Naval War College where he served on the faculty at the Center for Continuing Education until assuming command of USS FRESNO (LST 1182) in October 1978. Commander Schuerger is married to the former Margaret Davis of Hamden, Connecticut. The Schuergers have four daughters and reside in Bonita. California.

Commander Robert Peter LUCAS Commander Robert P. LUCAS was born in New York City, New York. He served in the Norwegian and United States Merchant Marine before attending the New York State Maritime College at Fort Schuyler where he graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation in 1958. Commander LUCAS received a direct commission in the Naval Reserve as Ensign and reported to the icebreaker USS GLACIER (AGB 4) in September 1958 where he served as Navigator. Commander LUCAS volunteered for submarine duty in 1959 and was assigned to the submarine USS CONGER (SS 477). In 1960 Commander LUCAS was assigned to the submarine USS ODAX (SS 484) as Engineering Officer where he served until 1964 when he was assigned as Director of Tactics at the Fleet Ballistic Missile Training Center at Charleston, S.C. In 1965 Commander LUCAS was assigned to the submarine USS TRUMPETFISH (SS 425) as Operations Officer and Navigator. During this period Commander LUCAS was qualified for command of submarines. Commander LUCAS attended the U.S. Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island in 1967. While at the War College he completed advanced studies at the George Washington University and was graduated with a degree of Master of Science in International Affairs. Upon completion of the War College in 1968, Commander LUCAS served as Executive Officer and Navigator of the fast attack submarine USS DARTER (SS 576). In 1970 he was assigned to the Staff of the Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, where Commander LUCAS was responsible for diesel submarine overhaul and maintenance. In May 1973 Commander LUCAS assumed the duties of the Executive Officer, USS NASHVILLE (LPD 13). Commander LUCAS assumed command of USS PORTLAND (LSD 37) in May 1975 and participated in the evacuation of Beirut, Lebanon in 1976. In March 1977 Commander Lucas was assigned to Amphibious Squadron EIGHT as Chief of Staff Officer until December 1977 when he was assigned to the Staff of Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He was assigned as CSO COMPHIBRON ONE in June 1978. Commander LUCAS has been awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, the Navy Expeditionary Medal and the Antartic Service Medal. Commander LUCAS is married to the former Joan Mary McGrath of Glen Ridge, New Jersey. They have one daughter Kathleen and two sons Michael Kevin and John Joseph.
