Something has led us on when the way ahead seemed hard and the way back easy. Something always gave that extra little push, sending us over the top. In the Old West, this intangible something kept our forefathers going forward into a new land and led them to settle one of the greatest sections of our country. It shows itself in the West today, in the bridges and dams, the skyscrapers and office building, the schools and hos- pitals, and in everything else which pictures the in- genuity, knowledge, and hope that are so typical of the West. No one knows what the future will hold, but we do know this . . . the West is going to play a big part in that future, whatever it may be. Close beside the lead- ers will be this irresistible power that has led the people on their march westward . . the Spirit of the West . . . the spirit that has made this part of the country what it is today. On the pages of this book we see that the students of Fresno High, like students elsewhere in the West, are carrying on the traditions set down for them many years ago. DEANS MESSAGE Fresno is a city of the Golden West which has become famous for its gracious hos- pitality, charming informality and glamour of outdoor life. The girls of Fresno High School have been glowing examples of these factors in their many splendid contribu- tions to the community. VVhether it has been time, talent or backstage work requested, the response has always been most gratifying and the achievements most satisfying. Perhaps the Red Cross needed posters or place cards, and the girls in the art classes responded. The service committees of the different girls' organizations most gener- ously answered the call of the community need for volunteers to staff the outdoor booths for the hlarch of Dimes and for the Crippled Children. lVIany, indeed, have? been the requests for the girls with musical and dramatic talents to donate their time and talent for benefit performances as well as for community en- joyment in the club, fraternal and city organizations. Seniors Three years ago the Class of I9-lb entered Fresno High School during those terrible years of war. Now in our last year peace has come. VVe graduate as the first peace time class in our high school life, yet many of our class can not graduate with us for they are in the service of our country. Ar school we at last have that coveted roll of being the leading class in school activities. 'lille executive committee, mostly seniors, had a line record of school achievements. Some of the projects we have worked for will be enjoyed by the future students of Fresno High, and our part in their beginning may be forgotten: yet when within the next few years students enjoy a swimming pool, a cafeteria, improved grounds, we can be proud that those are some of the things we, under the leadership of our principal, lklr. Dann, helped to accomplish. Our class has taken the lead in every department, as is right and customary for a senior class. lklany of our line students repeatedly are on the honor roll. VVe expect much of them at college. lf by their collegiate record the rating of our school in the state universities could be raised, we would have a lasting memorial to their untiring scholastic efforts. ln sports, our very successful year has been due largely to the seniors on the teams. A large number of the football squad were seniors. Likewise our class was well represented on the basketball team, track, and baseball teams. Seniors participated in all branches of our music departs ment -one greatly enlarged this year. 'l'hey entertained at assemblies and rallies, and represented the school at exchange assemblies. Our sponsors, bliss Bartlett and lklr. 'l'hiele, have served the class for three years: their cooperation and enthusiasm kept activity and interest alive even in war times. DON R. VVe had committees for announcements, caps and gowns, class gift, placque, song, assembly, baccalaureate, and finally, for commencement. lfach of these committees has been outstanding in the sin- cerity of effort of those serving on it. There has been co- operation and accomplishment on the part of each of them. YVe were guests of the Junior Class at the annual Junior- Senior Prom. and of the P.'l'.A. at the tea for seniors. As we look hack over our three years, we see a class who worked each year as a unit for the success of the class and school. The lklinstrel Show in our sophomore year started our working as a unit, and each year has seen our school with class spirit growing. lklany of the good records of which Fresno High can be proud during these three years can be attributed to the loyal efforts of members of the class of I9-lb. Some of the more diflictllt and dramatic plays have been presented because of the talent found in our class. Our all school play, Our Town , an outstanding success, was cast largely from the seniors. ln April the class presented Death 'llakes a Holiday . lt was an ambitious undertak- ing for a high school cast, and could not have been attempted had we not had the exceptional dramatic talent found among our members. lts artistic success ref'lected the ability and efforts of the cast and director: its financial success reflected also the untiring efforts of many other loyal class members. Our debate teams, having the most successful year in many years, included several seniors. ln publications, the Owlet has been our outstanding success with the guidance of lXIr. Robinson. SCDPHQMORES 'l'he large and active class of '48 started the fall semes- ter under the leadership of Dave lNIcCauley, their presi- dent. The rest of the ofificers were vice-president, Bill Kidwcll: secretary, lXIaxine-Ambrose: treasurer, VVarrt'n Schmidtg yell leader. Leslie Richter: and commissoiner of social aficairs, Ronnie Spencer. Several assemblies were held at the first of the year to acquaint the class with the traditions of their Alma lllater and the various clubs and organizations in the school. A special assembly about etiquette was also held. lllany class talent assemblies were presented, and several mem- bers of our class have appeared on student body programs. 'l'hroughout the year the class was always high in the sale of stamps, and in supporting the lVar Chest and the Red Cross. ltliss xlohnson's advisory proved outstand- ing, as it won the P.'l'.A. membership drive of the school, and the girls of this advisory won the intramural basket- ball series. The officers for the spring semester were president, Clinton Thaxterg vice-president, Steve Blumbergg secre- tary, Barbara Taylorg treasurer, Dave lXIcCauley3 and commissioner of social affairs, Shirley lX'IcGrew. Under these ofiicers the annual Sophomore Assembly was held. During the fall semester the class gave a very successful dance in the girl's gym. The class of '48, the first freshman class in Fresno High. owes much of its success to hard working sponsors, Miss Stubblefield and Mr. Hampton Sawyers. VVith so much talent and enthusiasm in evidence Fresno High can expect great things to come from the class of 43. SPRING OFFICERSW--'I'haxter. Mt-Grew, Taylor, ftIel'auley. li i lrerg, Richter. CADETS Following previous training programs, Fresno High School's Cadet Company carried on throughout the tall and spring terms with less than twenty oflicers and men working under the leadership of Major U. D. Guffey. The Adjutant General's Office in Sacramento laid down an eighty-five hour training program which covers recruit training, orientation, history of the cadet corps, soldier without arms, soldier with arms, military courtesy and discipline, and the care of clothing and equipment. Military courtesy and discipline are stressed strongly in advanced training stages and require ten hours. Dismounted drill calls for from fifteen to twenty hours of practice which takes place at Camp Roberts' Cadet Camp, starting july l. Map reading, complete with training films, is a favorite of many cadets and proves useful throughout life. Marches and bivouacs include practice marches to be augmented by overnight hivouacs wherever possible. Military sanitation and first aid require forty hours. Last on the cadet program, but definitely not the least, are marksmanship courses. Preparatory work is required before actual firing can he done. Rapid firing, safety precaution, duties of coach, and range practice follow. A marlcsmanship qualification course with record practice comes next with the technique of fire of the rifle squad ending the required cadet training program. Un guur-I! Girls' Physical Education played. Awards were given to the highest advisory and the winning players. Also new in Fresno High, but on the artistic side, was the ballroom dancing. Square dancing continued to be outstanding recreation as in the past. But, the new ballroom dancing classes proved to be equal in enjoyment. Coach Nlulkey brought the boys' physical edu- cation classes to join in. They were taught the fundamentals of modern dancing. Everyone seemed to enjoy it immensely. For a period of two weeks each spring, physical fitness tests are given. This year the girls again did push-ups, ran potato races, and did broadjumps. lndividual scores were kept and posted. This showed each girls relation to the other girls in Fresno High. About the same time, the American Red Cross Home Nursing course was given. This elective course was open to new girls only, as it has been given three years. Practical instruction in individual and family health, care of infants and children, home and community health problems, and symptons of illness were taught in addition to the actual care of the ill. Certificates were awarded, at the end of the course, to those who earned them. Nlinor' sports were taught when the bot weather arrived. Marty' played ping pong, badminton, paddle tennis, croquet, and handball. Others played tennis or improved upon their archery. All of these serve to quicken the eye and offer better coordination even if they do not require the great activity of some of the more strenuous sports. l'ul your little foot . . .
