RAMS LOST FIRST ROUND IN STATE TOURNEY The i960-61 Ram team pushed Fullerton Jr. College, rated the number one JC team in the State, to the limit in the first round of the California JC Tournament as this book went to press. The Rams led the toutezd Hornets at halftime, but could not halt the Fullerton five in the last minutes of the game. The result: Fuller- ton,-86, FCC, 81. The Kellymen played more than half of the ball game without the service of Big John Malone, who was a key man in the Ram attack during the entire year pouring in 409 points, Outstanding for the city college were guards, Gen- eral Joe Lee and Al Uriarte, forwards, Tim Jacobsen and Russ O'Leary, and reserve, Cleo Johnson, who filled in admirably when Big John was iniured after six minutes were gone in the first ho'f. SEASON'S SUMMARY FCC compiled an excellent 24 - win, 8 - loss record in season play and swept the CCJCA championship with il wins and i loss. The Rams poured in 2,346 points for an average of 73.3 points per game, ln league action FCC averaged 83.9 points per contest in rolling up l,007 points. Coach Kelly, one of the top basketball mentors in the State, started the season with lettermen, O'Leary, Jacobsen, Lee, John- son and John Hampton - who had only one semester of eligi- bility. Ourstanding finds in the Kelly stocking were Big John, Uriarte and freshmen, Herb Daniels, Jim Walls, Charles Craig and Armando Redondo - all recommended highly out of high schools in the Fresno area. Joining the squad were Gene John- son, FCC's best high iumper, and Marty Sharp, who enrolled at FCC in February. The Rams opened the season with a 63 to Herb Daniels and unidentified Ram go up for a rebound against Reed ley mon. Ram at for left is Cleo Johnson. 46 win over Bakersfield. Countinuing with practice games. FCC won i0 out of i6 before the league opener with Hancock. The Kellymen spotted the Bulldogs i6 points in that game, but came back to win 66 to 60. The Rams lost Hampton at the semester break, but went on to win six out of their next seven games with Uriarte filling in for Hampton. The veteran guard had scored 336 points for an average of i4.6 points per contest when he left the squad. FCC won the conference title and then toppled the conference all stars. All that was left was the State tourney. FCC was set to play Oakland City College in the second round at press time. Leading scorer for the Rams was O'Leary who dumped in 467 points. Malone and Jacobsen also surpassed 400 counters. Big John led the squad in rebounding, in the Hrst Coalinga game, Malone set a school record by grabbing 34 rebounds. As the season closed, FCC students had the right to be proud of an excellent team, directed by an excellent coach.
