FIFTH ROW, Coach Ray McCarthy, Cliff Beagle, the next game riding high against the Taft College Cougars. The Taft team, having read another script for the night, played their best game of the year and defeated FCC, 28 to 20. Taft racked up three touchdowns and led 20 to O before the Rams could get on the board in the first halt. The city college came back strong in the second halt, but the odds against them were too great. Following a week's rest and days spent in mourning, the Rams regained their winning ways by rolling over Coalinga College, 30 to l2. FCC scored tour times: Ward banged over from the Clarence Jarrett, Joe Williams, Dan Stockton, Tom Hickman, Tom Ahaianian, Dewey Belli, Ed Scherf and Head Coach Clare Slaughter. three, Ed Aubuchon scampered across from the six, and then Ward countered on two short runs. The next contest was to be a decider - the winner to be in contention for the conference title. FCC scored in the first halt and left the tield with a sizeable lead. Reedley, not to be denied, came back strong in the second half threatened throughout and grabbed the lead with only a few minutes re- maining in the game. The hard running of Ward and Owens led the Rams back, Owens rushing over from the nine to give FCC the win.

THIRD ROW, Coach Ellis Carrasco, Don Hunt, Larry Sasashima, Woody Gregory, Levi Owens, Howard Lakin, John l96O Season The Rams opened their season against the Fullerton Junior Col- lege Hornets in Fullerton. FCC dumped the Hornets, T5-O, The Rams scored twice and drove the Hornets back into their end zone for a safety. The first score came on a pass from Chuck Caldera to Bill Knocke, and the second tally came by another pass, Caldera to Levi Owens. FCC hosted Stockton College in the first home game at the McLane Stadium. The Rams rolled up five touchdowns in swamping the Mustangs, 33 to 6. Two of the scores were by passing, one completed to Dewey Belli, the other to Joe Williams. Ward and Knocke countered on short runs, while Tom Hickman tallied on an intercepted pass. ln their league opener against the College of Sequoias the Rams earned sweet revenge for a close loss in l959. The city college dumped the Giants, l9 to l4. The first Ram score came early in the first period when Ward drove over from the five- yard line. The Rams then tallied on a pass, Caldera to Williams for i5 yards. The last FCC score came on a Caldera to Williams pass, also. Excellent line play in the final moments of the game saved the win for the Rams. Having dumped one of the pre-season favorites, FCC entered 150

The downpour didn't hold FCC back, however. Ward swam for two tallies, Owens sloshed over for one, Tom Ahajanian swam the channel - 86 yards - and the fiinal two points came when Ray Farmer tackled a Porterville man in the end zone. The final score was Ram mermen, 32, Poterville mudders, O. A 28-yard field goal in the last 30 seconds was all that kept the Rams from upsetting the highly favored Allen Hancock Bulldogs in a conference title contest. Hancock won 21 to 20. The bowl bound Bulldogs came into the game confident of victory and with a minute to go, the Rams were ahead 20 to 18. Fans had left assured that the Rams had upset the Bulldogs, but a reserve who had not kicked a field goal all year dashed FCC's hopes with a perfect boot. Ward continued his fine running, coun- tering tor two scores, while Aubuchon pushed FCC ahead with his five-yard scamper. Hancock went on to win the Orange Show Bowl. FCC ended its regular season, downing Los Angeles City College, 22 to 14, in Los Angeles, Ward, Owens and Aubuchon accounted for the Rams TD's while Williams caught two extra point throws. FCC had to come from behind to win the game from the speedy LACC eleven. The victory gave the Rams a 7-win, 2-loss record. The Rams were then invited to the Sequoia Bowl to be the home team against the Coast Conference Champion Hartnell College Panthers. Hartnell entered the game un- defeated. However, Ward, Caldera and company weren't to be denied as FCC pulled the upset of the year scoring 16 points in the second half. Ward led FCC - gaining 124 yards on the ground out of 139 yards the entire FCC team earned on the ground. Coach Clare Slaughter ended his second year as Ram head mentor. His assistants were line coach, Ray McCarthy, backfield coach, newcomer Ellis Carrasco, and end coach, Len Bourdet. Del Speaks was team trainer. 152
