Frenchtown High School has always been a walk-away favorite whenever this question is asked. The 1987-88 school year proved to be no exception to this rule. In academics the school was chosen as a regional center of excellence. Which again is no surprise. The academic excellence that is encouraged in every discipline has helped the school to be one of the lops in the state. Frenchtown s extracurricular programs are always competing at their best. In every activity from sports and choir, to band and drama. FHS has always been a winner. Again, could we accept anything less? Table of Contents Activities ' Summer 87. Homecoming Fall Sports... Mr. Bill Strothman is one of the many dedicated coaches in Frenchtown. He has coached cross-country for 14 years since it started in 1974. When asked what it was that inspired him to coach all of these years he said, “It gives me a great opportunity to get to know the students better and also for them to get to know me.” The five person team did well this season. “They were all about the same this year, stated Mr. Strothman, “not one more outstanding than any of the others.” Because of the different courses, one could not determine a person more outstanding than another. Every member did their part and improved through each meet. Manager Sherie Clark keeps the team in good spirits □□□ □□□ □□□ Cross-Country 19 GIRLS Tami Lucier. Fortunately, the broncs are only losing three senior players, Laura Scharberg, Megan Howard, and Geni Cahala. They will be missed, but we still have a lot of varsity experience and have many promising newcomers. The broncs rallied in the district championship game by beating Darby. They also made it all the way to the divisional championship game, facing the Plains Trotters. Unfortunately, the Trotters outscored the Broncs in overtime, to beat them 63-59. The broncs still received a position in the state tournament. Girls Baskctball 21 Varsity - Bottom row-Tanya Younkin. Rochelle Nagy, Jenny Hoverson, Laura Scharbcrg. Kami Morrison Second row-Mgr. '% K The Band With the Beat u I I n The Pep Band played at most home games, and helped raise the spirits of both the players and the crowd. The band did great this year with a number of well played performances. This group of talented people also went on tour to Canada! At first, because of bad weather conditions, the trip was thought to be ruined. That was not how it turned out. In fact, the band ended up with a number of great concerts which helped add to the success of the year. Mr. White did a great job with the band this year! f I 28 Band 4' — - i _ I { I' I I Ronna is just a smile’n as usual! Fundraisers were started, chore- ography was written, and shopping sprees were planned. As the year wore on. reservations were made, schools were called, and many people joined choir at semester. Finally, the dates were set. every minute was carefully planned, and the equip- ment was packed. At 5:30 A M., on March 27, the buses were just about ready to pull out. Later into the day. at the Canadian border, the decision, whether or not to continue, a severe win- ter storm was dampening everyone’s spirits. When the buses reached Leth- bridge. a hotel was found, rooms ar- ranged for, and parents were called and reassured, while Mr. Johnston called trying to arrange shows. Although Edmonton was never reached, the tour was a success. People arc already talking about a trip to Ed- monton next year, not just for four days, but for an entire week. The 1987-88 school year brought with it some changes concerning the senior class. In the Fall of '87 the sen- iors were denied their seniority in the lunchline, however, with input from the class as a whole, the seniors re- gained their seniority. Another pressing problem for the sen- iors this year was the senior trip. The School Board did not want the Sen- iors going to Seattle. Mr. Paskey and a number of students from the senior class then went to a school board meeting where they presented their ideas and discussed their options. The class president, Stacy Schellinger spent a great deal of time and energy calling and writing to various resorts and dude ranches here in Montana, only to find that the School Board had cancelled the senior trip due to liabil- ity reasons. Even though the Senior Class of '88 have had their share of problems, they have pulled together to make their last year the most memorable ever!! We had a very relaxing semester( first semester), most of us just showed up for class and veged out. Third quarter hit and so did a few surprises, they're called DEADLINES. As we struggled to finish our layouts, and meet our DEADLINES, Mr. Anderson’s blood pressure rose and rose and rose. Unfortunately, not all of us made it. We kept working and one DEADLINE passed. Ahhhhhhh- we were so relieved, now we could fall back into the old habit of just showing up for class and veging out again. Right? Surprise!! We were faced with another DEADLINE. We worked, complained, worked, complained, complained, worked and complained some more and Mr. Anderson's blood pressure rose steadily. Well, we are now shooting for another DEADLINE, Mr. Anderson’s has checked himself into the I.C.U. ( Intensive Care Unit) of Community Hospital but is reported as stable. As for the annual staff ? We arc frequently visiting Warm Springs on a regular basis ( a few of us have checked in ) but hey, you've got your yearbook. Not many people know how much pain and agony and sleepless nights (Right? Mr. Anderson) an annual class experiences throughout the year. I myself did not realize the complexity of putting together a yearbook. It’s a lot of work but it looks like we made it?!?!?!?!? I must say, it's been an interesting year, long but interesting. But hey, nobody told us what annual class was all about, if they had. I'm sure we would have all taken a study hall. A NOTE FROM THE STAFF: Mr. Anderson, thanks for maintaining your “COOL”, we couldn't have done it without you. If and when we finally finish this yearbook, we dedicate it to you, if we don’t finish it... .....We'll finish!! ( I think). Anyway, take care of yourself, your high blood pressure, all twelve (12) of your ulcers, your migraine headaches, your insomnia, hypertension, and any black and blue marks you may have acquired either emotionally or physically throughout the year. It was quite an experience. Thanks for everything!!!! Thanks again. Amy, Joe, Dan, Jennifer. Donelle, Tami. Kelly, and Casey. t 102 Annual Staff Annual Staff 103 (I to r) Alternate Darcy Arnold. Your eyes are in the brilliant blue sky. You loved to make people laugh. You taught us how to have fun. And to live life to its fullest. You were satisfied with life. So it was time for you to go. Onto bigger and better things. You were too special for this world. It was time for you to go. You left and we will always miss you. But I know you will always be near. Jon Ringleb was a senior when a tragic accident took his life. The loss was a shock to all. Jon was the kind of person who always had a kind word for everyone and a smile that never seemed to end. He was involved in many activities, and a friend to many people here. He was the secretary of his class, a choir member, drama team member, and a Little Guy Wrestling coach. He will be sorely missed by many, but will remain close in hearts and memories for many years to come. This era was colored by the likes of Maralyn Monroe, Vince Lombardi, Peggy Flemming. Bob Hope, and many, many countless others. The 60’s saw the hippies and flower children. And with these peaple. a new meaning of the word “freedom” was realized. Rock music was born again with such musical greats as the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Doors, Janis Joplin, and Jimmy Hendrix, to name but just a few. But, on the other side of the coin, we also saw the Vietnam War Crisis, the draft, racial unrest, and the assasinations of some of this countries greatest leaders. Yes, the 60’s was one of the most colorful decades in our nations history. And thanks to the students of Mr. Johnstons history classes, it is a era that will live in our minds forever. Hats off to another successful History Days! Casey Richardson portrays Elmer Keith, and Jennifer Hart dresses as the tennis legend, Billie Jean King. The National Honor Society is based on the ideals of character, service, scholarship, and leadership. In those areas, the NHS, did a lot this year, they decorated the Poverello Center for their Christmas dinner for the needy. Strdents enjoy one of the finest physical facilities and one of the best academic programs in the smaller school districts of the state. As most of you are aware, Frenchtown High School was designated as a center of excellence by the English Teachers of America and their headquarters in the University of Illinois at Urbana. We have an excellent athletic program to work hand in hand with the academic side of our education. I would urge all students to take full advantage of the programs offered at Frenchtown. Try every different activity that you possibly can regardless of your ability. If you do this, you will find an exciting new facet of your educational program - one that will lighten the days and weeks as the year progresses. As a member of the student body, you must make your full contributions for the benefit of your fellow students. Once you make a commitment in the usual Frenchtown way pursued to its logical conclusion and you will leave Frenchtown with memories that will be part of you high school career for as long as you live. Best of luck to the Broncs and all members of the Bronc team. Sincerely, Mr. Hightower You'll Be Missed.
