VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES IN SOCIETY As John F. Kennedy once said, ‘'The future of America lies in the youth of today. This statement reflects a confidence in America's youth that is not shared by all Americans and yet it only stands to reason that the future is in our hands, just as it was in the generations that preceded us and will be in those who came after us. The determination that the members of this class have shown will certainly lead us through life, a life with purpose and direction. Whether each person's future will include college, the military, or vocational training, which will strive to attain excellence and make their country a better place in which to live for them, their family and their neighbors and friends. And so we face this future with problems that are greater than ever before, to counter balance this we have resources that we may call upon to solve these problems that are also greater than ever before. The steady growth of America in power and prosperity would indicate that the future is in good hands. We have endured twelve years of schooling and we are now ready to break out into the world and live life our own way. We will strive for a society where we can work together and have the cooperation that it takes to have a good quality life. I stand here before you as a member of the class of nineteen hundred and seventy six. I am proud to be the valedictorian of this bicentennial class, to part of the celebration of our 200th birthday as a nation. It is a time to look back proudly on our achievements over two centuries, but also a time to pause, and consider the meaning of it all in our future. To us, as graduates, it means that we have the right to determine our own vocation. And so we enter into a new realm of life, no longer under die protection of our parents and teachers. We now take the responsibility of decision-making into our hands. I am sure that they won't always be the right ones but we can leam from our mistakes and not make the same ones again. On behalf of myself and the entire class I would like to thank die parents, teachers, Mr. Hightower, Mr. Stone and Mr. Strothman for the guidance, help and education they have given us-but mostly for teaching us how to live. Tom Whelan May 17, 1976
