Sitting in the gym at noon, riding a crowded, cold bus on those winter mornings, and even the detention we thought we didn’t deserve will some day be the memories we will share with old school mates at class reunions. For all too soon, incidentals that seem unimportant today are the things we will be reliving tomorrow. But all of our memories, both good and bad, will be so much a part of That Wonderful Year 1970, recorded in this Vistula. 2 i }U0iuAolu A nxiety 4 10 TERRI SUTTON KATHY SHAFFER CARLA FELLER Homecoming Enjoyed by Many Homecoming 1969 was a success despite the rain. A bonfire, for which all the classes gath- ered wood, was held the day before the game. A WOWO disc jockey, Jim Brady, was on hand to present the student body with a plaque listing our Booster Club members. After the coaches introduced the cross country and football teams and gave various pep talks, the cheerleaders led supporting fans in different yells. On Friday at half-time Karyl Palmerton, 1968 Homecoming Queen, crowned Sophomore candidate, Sherry Palmerton, as die 1969 Homecoming Queen. Her court consisted of Senior, Carla Feller, Jun- ior, Terri Sutton, and Freshman, Kathy Shaffer. Although the boys did not emerge victorious, the J.C. L. held a dance in the gym. This was a fitting conclusion to the very enjoyable time spent in preparing for the events. Coaches lead a yell. Queen, S. Palmerton King, T. NORAGON Carnival Profits Aid Students Ghosts and goblins filled the gymnasium on October 31, 1969, to begin the Halloween Carnival. Booths of orange and black, dec- orated by the various classes, lined the walls to set the scene. Events which highlighted the evening included two talent shows, wrestling matches, cake walks, a raffle, the crowning of the King, Queen, Prince, and Princess, and the costume judging. A large crowd in attendance patronized the different concessions. The proceeds were used for assemblies, school improvements, and each class received a percentage of the receipts from the booths which they sponsored. Carnival Manager M. Library Is Filled with Students Doing Research To help Mrs. Crandall in the library is a force of seven students who have many tasks to perform. These students give their time and effort in helping the library run smooth ly and efficiently. Checking books in and out, filing cards, putting books back on their original shelves, and making sure that all books are accounted for are but a few of their daily routines. Not only is the high school library receiving this attention, but the grade school library as well. Karen Smith and Cindy Putnam give up their time of studies to work in the elementary school. 16 Girls work at grade school. Will 1 like this book? K. Clark, S. Wilson, C. Brown, J. Pierce, C. On May 13, 1969, the Fremont High School student body was the first to view the talents of the members of the newly formed Tumbling Club. The club was headed by Mrs. Donna Babinski. It consisted of girls talented in the field of gymnastics. After weeks of frantic practicing, the big day finally came. Excitement rose in the souls of the girls as they dressed in their black suits and leotards and prepared for the show. They performed exercises, a flag routine, double stunts, and routines on the balance beam and uneven bars. 20 BACK ROW: M. Bressler, S. Palmerton, S. Birchfield, C. Pierce, M. Mertz, C. Smith, R. Although many members of the team were outstanding individually, the team was unable to score a victory. Fred goes up ... and over. Steve jumps long to score a point. BACK ROW: R. Brown, M. Sellers, B. Collins, J. Vaughn, J. Lantz. FRONT ROW: J. Melchi, D. Foulk, P. McCarty, R. Spidel, R. Parsell. Wood Hits Leather as Eagle Nine Scores Concentrated pitching efforts and a balance of hitting power during the spring season games held promise that the 1969 Eagle baseball squad would be a potential threat in competition. However, the team was a young team compared to the other schools in the Northeast Indiana Corner Conference, and they were unable to score a victory during the summer games. Batting .216 and fielding .926, Jerry Melchi secured a berth on the All Conference Team. Bart Collins held the highest fielding average of .968, and Butch Brown led with a batting average of .275. 46 M. Swander, C. Emerick, C. Pierce, M. Bock, S. Greenawalt, Coach, D. Rummer. Marty wins for Fremont High. Our Boys Cross the Country on Foot Although hampered by inexperience as a team, Coach Rummer's cross country squad was sparked by the continued success of sophomore Martin Swander. Chuck Pierce, who has been with the team for three years, turned in several fine performances. Despite the grueling training and hard' work of the boys, they were able to win only one meet. 47 BACK ROW: R. Ansley, D. Close, J. Word, J. Vaughn, C. Collins, J. Cobb, M. Mertz, M. This was a year for building a team, and under the direction of Coaches Tragemann and Louden, the boys worked many long and hard hours training. The offensive attack of Fremont was highlighted by the sensational combination of Joe Lantz and Steve Foster. Defensive giants were led by Tom Sherburne, who stopped many offensive threats by spilling both enemy linemen and ball carriers. Go for a touchdown! What will be the outcome? BACK ROW: J. Guthrie, R. Luck Changes for Varsity on Unlucky Day Fundamental in developing an athletic team is the capability of the coach to organize and direct his squad to the extent of their abilities. Upon his shoulders rests the responsibility of decision, offering him a share in victory or the burden of any defeat. Although Fremont basketball has been at a dismal low. Coaches Rummer, Louden, and Johnson have initiated a strong rehabilitation program and have had a profound in- fluence on the athletes through their enthusiasm, guidance, and leadership. Bart Collins has proved a formi- dable foe with his skill in rebounding and at the free throw stripe, but despite his efforts the team scored only one victory - near the end of the season over Union City, Michigan. Where's our team? Rebound! Neal hustles. Raise that score! I fP Mike waits for the play. % WJJ? Eagles stretch for that ball. BACK ROW: R. Brown, M. Sellers, D, Close, J. Vaughn, C. Gary, R. Dodge. SEATED: Mrs. Charles Antrup, Burtis Horrall, Charles Peel, Harold Clark. Through the doors of the American public schools pass the future citizens of our na- tion. They enter these doors that they may grow scholastically, socially, physically, and increase their understanding of self and of their fellowmen. After several years of formal education they leave to meet the many challenges of adulthood. The trials and problems faced in school become the happy memories in the years ahead. To provide an atmosphere where such growth and development is possible is the task of die board of education. 102 School District Advances Under New Superintendent Mr. Ray Evans, new this year from Muncie, Indiana, has proved to be a qualified super- intendent. He has served as superintendent of Delaware County and held the positions of teacher and principal in various schools. He now resides in Fremont with his wife and son. Mrs. Crawford, now in her seventh year as secretary to the superintendent, has shown outstanding work in that field and al- so as treasurer of the school board. 103 Secretary, KATHERINE CRAWFORD Superintendent, RAY EVANS High School Operates Efficiently Mr. Mitchell keeps things running smooth- ly and efficiently in the halls of Fremont High School. He guides and takes time to offer counseling to the students along with his tedious job of arranging activities for the school. Always a valuable aid in the running of a high school is the school sec- retary. Just such an aid is Mrs. Rathbun. She is kept busy by many duties which in- clude answering the phone and making an- nouncements. High School Principal, MAX MITCHELL Secretary, JEANETTE RATHBUN Elementary Strives for Quality Education Elementary Principal, FRANK M. SANDERS Mr. Sanders serves as principal of the Elementary School. He strives to keep up with the changing ideas in education to use in teaching the young students in the Fremont area. She is very ef- ficient and genial in her work. Secretary, THELMA MITCHELL 105 Pausing before starting their routes are H. Beams, L. Huss, C. Duncan, H. Wise, K. Spidel, V. Smith, and R. Walter.
