MARILYN JOYCE ZERLAUT Packer Tales Staff, Future Nurses Club, Junior-Senior Banquet. mica Each of us started a new phase of our lives four years ago when we embarked on our high school careers. To guide us through the early stages of our career we had the assistance of Miss Orr, Mr. Naber, Mr. Hermance, Mr. Myers, and Miss Randall. We chose for our class officers Bob Crandell, Jerry Olson, Jim Houghtaling, and Bill Maynard. We were well represented in Student Council by Bill Rottman, Nancy Palmer, Darlene Cook, and LaVerne Young. We worked hard, but found time for a skating party at Shelby. Many of us participated in sports or musical or- ganizations. Nancy Palmer, Susan White, Shirley Deuling, and Vonnie Vredeveld became maiorettes for the senior band. When the next fall rolled around, we found our- selves in more advanced classes. As wise, experi- enced sophmores, we elected Darlene Cook as pres- ident, LaVerne Young as vice-president, Jerry Olson as secretary, and Sally Weiden as treasurer. Our advisors, Mr. Provines, Mrs. Adair, Mr. Heer- spink, and Mr. Warner helped us arrange a skating party at Curvecrest with the freshmen. We were proud to have Bill Maynard and Bob Crandell on the varsity football team and Jim Kolk in varsity basketball. Many of the boys were parti- cipating in other sports. We were especially proud of our undefeated reserve basketball team. In addition to the outstanding sportsmen, our class produced a first place cherry pie contestant. Carolyn Huisien is that fine cook. Again we were well represented in student gov- ernment. Our councilmen were Jean Kingsford, Ar- lene Hoffman, Bob Crandell, and Ken Somers. Our iunior year was the busiest yet. Jim Kolk was our president, Susan White our vice-president, Jerry Olson our treasurer, and Vonnie Vredeveld our secretary. Mr. Durkee, Miss Morren, Miss Ran- dall, Mrs. Adair, Mr. Bammel, and Mr. Fosheim helped us with our many activities. Charles Miller and Jim Miesen were members of the newly organized debate team. We were very active in Student Council. Susan White was secre- tary and Jim Houghtaling was a cabinet member. Jon Miller, Sally Weiden, Darlene Cook, Bill Rott- man, and Don Huisien were our representatives. 32 Q. Mother is a Freshman was the play we pre- sented under Mr. Fosheim's patient direction. Our theme for the Junior-Senior Banquet was A Trip to Paris. We found Mike McDonnell's interpreta- tion of the can-can dancers very amusing. When we finally got used to the idea of being seniors, we buckled down and went to work again. We started the year with a bang. With Miss VanHorn's pep talks backing us, we couldn't miss - and we didn't. The magazine sale and our big senior sale were both tremendously successful. Our class funds rose even higher with the Christmas card sale and the senior movie. To our sponsors, Mr. Durkee, Mr. Adair, Mr. Bammel, Miss Elmquest, and Miss VanHorn, we owe the success of our projects. We placed the responsibilities of class president upon Jon Miller. Jim Miesen performed the duties of vice-president, Karen Peters those of secretary, and Jerry Olson those of treasurer. Don Huisien was Student Council president and Sally Weiden was secretary. Ivan Boerman, Bill Rottman, Jon Miller, Susan White, and Charles Miller served as cabinet members. Also representing the seniors in the council were Lois Sneller, Don Dykman, and l.es Kolk. An important event was the Homecoming with Queen Vonnie Vredeveld presiding over the festivi- ties. ln the field of sports the seniors produced some outstanding athletes. We will never forget the per- formances of Bob Crandell and Don Dykman both in football and basketball. To cheer the teams on, we had peppy cheerlead- ers Judy Bultman, Karen Peters, Shirley Deuling, and Nancy Palmer. Our final spring was a busy but enioyable one. With our play, Curtain Going Up, our memorable skip trip, the banquets, and finally baccalaureate and commencement, we ended that phase of our lives. Now as we go on to another phase and other work, we can take not only the wonderful memories of FHS, but also the knowledge we acquired in these four years with the invaluable assistance of the entire faculty. The Packers began the '55 football season with a green, inexperienced team and emerged with a record of three wins, four losses and one tie. After having lost to Hart and defeating Whitehall, they began league play with a loss to Hudsonville. Against Reed City the Packers came back in an action-packed game to get a O-O tie. ln a thrilling Homecoming game Fremont defeated Sparta i4-6. Comstock Park was the next to fall before the Packers attack to the score of 21-6. The two remaining games were with Zeeland and Coopersville. Although Fremont lost both games, they were hard fought contests with the low scores of 7-6 and 13-6. The prospects for the next season are promising be- cause of the large number of boys returning from the three lower grades and the small number of players graduating.
