The images pass with each little gust, And we see them change with the grace of fairies. We see: lumbering wagons laboring byg Silent Indians across the plains fly, Now and then, a face peers through the cloud, And Fremont doifs his shroud. We see him live, not on a monument, But on the trails over which he went. Now he is not the hazy figure that waves in a bookg He is the Pathfinder and a soldier, To whom we thankfully look. When of this land we speak, we must to him refer, For he was one of the makers of this state, The California we so highly rate. Those were the days, we sometimes say, And regret that we live today. I wonder what those pioneers would do, If they heard us musing in that mood, For I know they never stopped to review Their fathers' deeds, and brood Over their good old days. When Fremont blazed the ways He surely was not looking back, Nay, he was looking forward, to track The wilderness for the tomorrow that is today So that we could continue the Westward way.
