Peter Pan There are occasional times during our high school days when we put aside our image of ourselves as almost adults and expose the child within. Halloween offers one of these last chances to be a kid again and most seniors grab the opportunity to live out their fantasies for a few hours. Besides being a lot of just plain fun. the Halloween costume tradition seems to relieve some of the pressure in the daily round of classes, tests, and homework. Some students are content with makeshift costumes, rummaged from closets and attics. Others spend a small fortune to rent a costume which will guarantee them plenty of attention. 69 EDITORS’ CHOICE 70 THIS PAGE: 1. She considered schools both near and far and decided that she wanted to strike out on her own and live away from home during her college years. With that in mind she traveled with friends to upstate New York, managing to squeez in visits to four campuses: Hartwick College, and the SUNY schools at Oneonta, Delhi, and Binghamton. With a sister on one campus and a friend on another. Kathy was able to stay overnight in the dorms and get a taste of the social side of higher learning. What she saw both surprised and pleased her and she returned from her trip reinforced in her decision to seek an away from home school. Picture right: Kathy and her life-long friend Sheila McAuley visit SUNY Delhi where Kathy’s sister is a freshman. Below: Although the campus is attractive, Kathy finds SUNY Oneonta does not offer some of the programs in which she is interested. A small city with two colleges, Oneonta offers a really collegiate atmosphere. The Delta Sigma Phi house is one of the many fraternity and sorority residences located near the campuses. 72 Part of the fun of a visit to SUNY Binghamton is the sumptous Sunday brunch at Coco's Restaurant, across the highway from the campus. The pictures on the wall of this dorm room at Delhi are a clue to one of the school's specialties. Many of the students here are planning careers as veterinarians. Kathy could not resist a trip to the school store to purchase a sweat shirt. 73 FREEPORT-SUBURBAN MELTING POT More than most Long Island communities Freeport is home to a rich variety of people from around the globe. Most are happy in their new home but they generally agree that the first years of adjustment and the learning of a new language were not easy. Some of them still enjoy occasionally donning the festive dress of their native lands. Group photo: Greisy Duran, Peggy Solis. Tatiana Cedeno, Teresa Lozano. Paula Lainez. Maria Lainez. 74 Sandra Palala 75 r On September 27, Hurricane Gloria stormed across the eastern seaboard and headed toward Freeport. Weather forecasters issued severe storm warnings, and Freeporters braced themselves for the worst. Canned foods were stocked up. tubs were filled with water, fresh batteries were put in radios and flashlights, and local schools were designated as evacuation centers. For several hours Gloria’s 100 + MPH winds and torrential rains battered Freeport, but when it was all over, our village was only slightly worse for the wear. What had been billed as possibly the worst hurricane in our region’s history turned out to be much milder than anticipated. 76 Chris Farruggio and Scott McAuley find the waters of Milburn Creek too swift for swimming. When the eye of the hurricane passed over Long Island people ventured out into the sudden sunshine to assess the damage. « 77 TOP TEN While it may not have taken actual blood, sweat, and tears to attain a ranking in the top ten graduates of the class of 1986. it did require perseverance, motivation and enormous amounts of hard work. Among the events, which were both exciting and amusing, were the dress-up dress-down race. For a substantial portion of the crowd the joy of seeing hall-aide Terry Reilly (see picture left) as the target in the pie throwing contest warranted alone the one dollar admission price. 81 LANGUAGE CLUBS FEATURE FOOD WITH A FOREIGN FLAVOR “What are we going to eat?” is one of the first questions heard when language clubs plan a get-together. AS THE WHEEL TURNS 84 DRIVERS’ EDUCATION Drivers’ Education has been taught at Freeport High School since the school’s opening in 1960. Instructors during the school year are Mr. Posses, Mr. Larkin, and Mr. Austin. During summer school Mr. Mohrman, Mr. Galati, Mr. Kaplan and Mr. Restivo are added to the ranks. To teach the course an instructor must earn 7 credits in this field. Approximately 60 to 70 percent of seniors enroll in the course. Students spend about 10 to 20 minutes a week behind the wheel of one of the two Plymouth Volares owned by the school. Two to three periods a week are spent in lecture classes where students learn the proper driving techniques and attitudes. Safety consciousness and responsibility are stressed. The bonus is a 10 to 15 percent saving on auto insurance costs. OOPS! “Take some pictures that are different. the editors told photographer, Glenn White. Opening night finds the cast in full gear : I On November 22nd and 23rd, Masque and Wig performed “George Washington Slept Here,” by Hart and Kaufman. The play has Newton and Annabelle Fuller (Jack Sandhaas and Ruth Regan) purchasing a house in decrepit condition. As they fix it up with their daughter. Madge (Eva Marie Kirk), and her fiancee, Steve (Michael Bollacke), they receive visits from friends (Harold Rawlings, Jeff Bergeron, Christine Leger, and Amy War-man), a freeloading uncle (Eric White), a pair of thespians (Chris Fenyo and Donna McBride) and a spoiled brat of a cousin (Jeff Bollacke). Further, they go through the quitting of one maid (Missy Fogarty) and the hiring of another maid with boyfriend problems (Christine Darragh). The restoration of the house proves to be too much due to the harassment of a neighbor (Rob Pistani), and the caretaker (David Keller), who seems to care more about his wallet than the house. The student director was Mickee Imwalle. and the faculty advisors were Mr. Robert Yarmola and Mrs. Sondra Rappaport. GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE “Drat Those Deadlines,” Say VOYAGEUR VOTARIES At least five times during the year the dreaded word deadline haunts the devoted crew that assembles the yearbook. Late submission of copy means delayed delivery of the book in June. What prompts high school students to submit themselves voluntarily to such pressure seems, at least at deadline time, to be shrouded in mystery. YEARBOOK STAFF: Front: Antoinette Lambert-Watkins. General meetings for all interested are called on a Tuesday three weeks prior to an upcoming deadline. Writers must submit their articles two weeks later. On Thursday editors choose which articles are to appear in print, and on Sunday they Degin the process of laying out the issue. Proofreading takes place on the following Tuesday and by the next Monday the paper is in the hands of the printer. In the course of a school year eight or nine issues appear. Business editor, Samantha Boulukos, is responsible for finances. Chris Fenyo, photography editor, counts words to ensure a perfect fit. Tara Stenzel looks over a dummy page.
