Every few minutes the plaintive voice of a new student is heard asking, “Where is room_____? Then just imagine a school in which all the students and the faculty as well are new. This was the scene on a bright September morning at FHS twenty-five years ago when the present high school opened its doors to fifteen hundred confused tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders. One student commented, “The first day made one weak.” While much has changed in the intervening quarter of a century, human nature has not. People are still . . showing school spirit still struggling with new experiences «Jiu teachers are still opening new doors — — and some of us are still just chillin’ hard. 14 oetotr «j, n, n v' bofjtesJbt really pay (] ■? ? ■' V.Kici' J KtK KI Tif Jw _ l FREEPORT HIGH SCHOOL STAFF 'ADMINS TRA TION William McElroy. Crispyn NEW FACES AT FHS FACULTY FRESHMEN SHOW ENTHUSIASM “Welcome back, Adamowsky ” could be the phrase uttered by students of Freeport High's new Spanish - Italian teacher, Lori Adamowsky, for she too, like the Mr. Kotter of TV fame, is a product of the school where she now teaches. Her infectious enthusiasm is generally shared by the other new teachers. French teacher, Barbara Lawson, commented, “I like the organization and efficient management of school programs, activities, and the school in general.” In some cases special programs served as a lure for new teachers. “Freeport's Math Department has a great reputation and I wanted to be a part of it,'' said Judith Issacs. Marilyn Stuzin felt that the ESL Center, which provides help in English for foreign students in all subject areas, is one of the few of such caliber among local school districts. All of them have worked at the present high school since it opened in 1960. Most of the teachers are content with both their choice of career and school district, although Biology teacher, Paul Waiting, and Latin -English teacher, Arlene Murphy, say they might have considered college teaching, whereas Industrial Arts instructor, Joseph Bessel, would probably have accepted job offers from IBM or Bell Aircraft. There is general consensus among the veteran teachers that, despite the increase and variety of course offerings now compared to two and a half decades ago, students show less propensity to work hard. “Quarter Century Club” members include: custodian, Mr. Crispyn; attendance officer, Mr. Furey, and teachers, Mr. Bessel, Mr. Gorman, Miss Gronenberg, Mr. McAuley, Mr. Merk, Miss Murphy, Miss Schuler, Mrs. Tessier, Mrs. Thompson, and Mr. Waiting. For the past 14 years he has been accomplishing that goal with considerable success, as attested to by the fact that a number of his students have obtained employment in the field of photography. About a dozen of them have attended the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York. Supplying pictures for the Album section of this yearbook is just one of the projects which have kept the classes busy this year. Mr. Restivo’s students have also photographed other school activities, such as the Senior Variety Show and the Home Economics Department’s Mock Wedding. 35 36 38 QNna v 47 SENIORS Senior Kenny Lewis plans to study aeronautical engineering after he graduates. Through the front doors streamed a motley assortment of witches, storybook characters, a hula dancer, G.l. Joe, and even a werewolf. The practice of coming to school in costume for Halloween was started by members of the 1978 Voyageur staff in an attempt to obtain lively and interesting pictures for the yearbook. The idea caught on and has been a tradition ever since. 66 67 69 70 72 Albert Stoessel, Tony Ellis HATS OFF IN THIS g OFFICE Flaunting the rules earns many a student a trip to the A.P. office Students often gather in the gymnasiums after school Matarsha Turner Ricky Giordano maintains his car in the auto shop. Vicky Stewart VARIETY SHOW The Senior Variety Show, in terms of energy and time devoted to it, is probably the biggest joint effort of the senior class. Close to 200 seniors sweat out two months of rehearsals to entertain their fellow students and to earn the approximately $5000 which offsets the cost of their prom bids. This year’s production, the usual mixture of songs, dances and often risque skits, was directed by Lisa Walsh, with Filiz Turhan as act director and David Epstein as technical director. Mr. John Schreiber and Mr. Ronald Grinnell served as advisers. 78 81 UNDERCLASSMEN 83 Homeroom 203 Row 1:1) Mrs. Mason 2) Keniz Abreu 3) Liaette Abreu 4) Joseph Asher 5) Tim Assam 6) Robert Adamczyk 7) Ramon Arias 8) John Ahren Row 2: 1) Sonya Arthur 2) Cathy Arias 3) Luisa Arena 4) Laurie Arroyo 5) Florence Andujar 6) Charlie Agosto 7) George Anagnostopoulos 8) Richard Afanador Row 3: 1) Cassandra Antoine 2) Huguette Alexander 3) Liza Antomez 4) Antoine Atieh 5) Bengie Adams 6) Daniel Andre 7) Brian Anson 8) Fausto Abreu Homeroom 204 Row 1:1) Ms. McClarrin 2) Timothy Berns 3) Michael Bollacke 4) Jeffery Bollacke 5) Teresa Barbaro 6) Maria Barrera 7) Samantha Boulukos Row 2:1) Nora Betram 2) Zachary Borynack 3) Sarnita Bellamy 4) Douglas Blake 5) Marian Barnes 6) Georgina Bolden 7) Veronica Barmore 8) Josette Boothe Row 3: 1) Kevin Bailey 2) Lionel Bell 3) Kerry Blount 4) Charles Bostic 5) Paul Allen 6) Erica Bellamy 7) Tracey Bell 8) Christa Birnie Row 4 Richard Bayer Homeroom 205 Row 1:1) Miss Martorana 2) Aleatha Broughton 3) Raquel Brown 4) Portia Brown 5) Lidia Campos 6) Alex Camacho Row 2:1) Matthew Braz 2) Tammi Bryant 3) Eveline Briscoe 4) Lisa Burrell 5) Anthony Burwell 6) Christopher Bustamante 7) Robert Bumpus 8) Arthur Callahan Homeroom 206 Row 1: Ann Chevez 2) George Chin 3) Sean Chin 4) Desiree Carr 5) Jesus Chumpitaz 6) Ms. J. In the late spring selection of the new staff begins. During the summer there are usually a few planning sessions, and then even before the opening of school in September, cameramen arrive to photograph the new seniors. From that point on it is a race with time to meet one deadline after another. Accomplishing this task often leaves staff members with little time for other extra-curricular activities. The reward comes in June when hardworking editors see their creation in print. Photographing over 60 homerooms on a tight schedule requires a lot of planning and the help of every staff member. The adviser and section editors confer on lay out and contents of each page. Extraneous areas of pictures are removed be- All copy must be typed. No handwritten mate-fore a photo is submitted for publication. The rial is accepted by the printer, process is known as cropping. Finding the right photo among the thousands taken can be a bewildering task. 127 TECH CREW Front Row: Harold Rawlings, Mike Bollacke, Jeff Bollacke, Christina Fonden, Rob Grupski. 2nd Row: Danny Bollacke, Heather McKeown, Troy Holly. ANNOUNCERS David Vieser, Mr. Schildkraut, Chris Fenyo, Darryl Mag 129 TEEN TEACHERS TUTORING COMMITTEE EXPANDS YEARLY For the past five years FHS students having academic difficulties have had an alternative to after school help from their subject teachers. The idea of students tutoring other students had its inception in the early days of the state mandated Regents Competency Testing Program, when the school was faced with the task of providing remedial help in basic subjects to a sizeable group of people. The program has expanded to the point where over one hundred tutors are helping an even larger number of their fellow students in almost all areas of the curriculum. Reaction to their experiences among the tutors has varied, with the majority finding considerable personal satisfaction in the task. For Mrs. Greenberg, adviser to the program, it is a labor of love. She devotes many hours a week to help make it work. Members of the tutoring committee include: Adrienne Brigmon, Doris Quiros, Anne Vlitas, John Mugno, Larry Inniss, Larry Umemoto, Leslie Keyes, Erik Saarmaa, and Anthony Scalamandre. 130 PERFORMING ARTS MASQUE AND WIG OFFICERS PRESIDENT DAVID EPSTEIN VICE PRESIDENT FILIZ TURHAN SECRETARY MICKEE IMWALLE TREASURER DUCHESNE DREW ADVISORS STEPHEN PAGANO ROBERT YARMOLA PRESENTS AGATHA CHRISTIE’S TEN LITTLE INDIANS CAST ROGERS ERIC WHITE MRS. Another pep rally is under way. But this year audience participation bubbled over into rowdiness and the whole practice of pep rallies at FHS came to a screeching halt. It remains to be seen whether the tradition can be successfully revived in future years. 'SEEF38T ■ I SCHOOL LIFE on our TOP TEN A quick glance at the accomplishments of the ten 1985 graduates with the highest academic averages would dispel any notion that their pursuits are purely academic. The list of their extra-curricular activities ranges from mathletes to music, form sports to Spanish club and sounds like a catalog of the clubs at FHS. Almost without exception they also hold jobs outside of school, working as much as 25 hours per week. Their high school careers are a testimony to the old saying, “If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it.” Anthony Scalamandre Timothy Carroll Doris Quiros Karen Johnson John Mugno Michael Pasternack William Misita Grant Held Dawn Bucci Filiz Turhan 168 HERE COMES THE BRIDE . . . Except for the schoolroom setting, guests at the Home Economics Department’s mock wedding could almost believe they were attending a real marriage ceremony. The bride and groom are appropriately dressed, a preacher is in attendance, and the “father of the bride escorts his daughter down the aisle. Food for the reception is prepared by one of the cooking classes. Mrs. Venair incorporated this realistic touch into the Family Planning Course a number of years ago to help her students deal with the complexities of planning a wedding and setting up a household. The course, taught this year by Mrs. Posner, is popular with both boys and girls. 170 171 Sheila and Scott McAuley TWO’S COMPANY “What’s it like being a twin?” The question is so often asked of them that most twins have a quick and ready answer. Almost inevitably they comment that it has its good and its bad points. For most of them the positive far outweighs the negative. Sixteen sets of twins attend Freeport High School, placing it slightly below the average for the population at large. The incidence of twin births is related to geography and race Among blacks one in seventy-nine births results in twins, while for whites the ratio is about one in a hun- Hrorl Salvatore and Angeline Ranieri George and David McAvoy Keith and Kelvin Holston Anita and Annetta Scott THREE’S A CROWD Gary, Garfield and Garrett Turner are a statistical rarity. Triplets occur once in 7,569 births. Twins are less camera shy than the average person. Among the extra attentions showered upon them is a lot of picture taking. Here Jeaninne and Deninne Wallace are caught by the camera as they primp in preparation for the photo. 173 Another day, another dollar might well be the motto of a sizeable number of FHS students who have a job after school and on weekends. It amounts to a great deal more than a dollar, however, since many working students put in a good 25 hours per week or more, most of them at the minimum wage of $3.35 per hour. Retail establishments are the most readily available sources of employment for high school students, with supermarkets and fast food chains leading the others. Asked to comment on the effect of employment on their academic career, many students indicated that their grades would probably be higher if they did not hold a job. In a surprising number of cases working students are among the most active in sports, clubs, and other school activities. Tight schedules have taught many of them a valuable skill - the ability to plan and budget their time. Saskia Monteiro has had to learn the intricacies of the Freeport Memorial Library’s computer system. It is a compact community, extending about 3.56 miles from north to south and 1.9 miles from east to west. Nicknamed “The Boating and Fishing Capital of the East”, it has 17.5 miles of waterfront.
