Freeport High School The Fantastic Voyage of the Class of 1983 COMMUNITY The village was originally known as Raynorstown, and was founded by Edward Raynor in 1659. During colonial times, the village was referred to as free port by merchant sailors. Sailors learned that they could avoid paying duties at the major ports of New York and Sag Harbor, by landing their cargo at free port . The name was not officially changed until 1853. Freeport became an incorporated villaqe in 1892. During the weekend of October 23, 1982, Freeport celebrated its 90th anniversary by having a weekend celebration. This included a parade down Merrick Road. Residents, both old and young lined up on Merrick Road to watch the floats, bands, horses, fire engines, and various other marchers parade by. 2 3 4 9 Freeport is considered The Fishing and Boating Capital of the East. The focal point of its fabulous waterfront is Woodcleft Canal, which is also referred to as the Nautical Mile. There are fishing trips scheduled throughout the day and evening that anyone may participate in, and numerous fish markets where a variety of fish may be purchased. Freeport does not only center around fishing. Residents can shop in the many stores in and around the Freeport Mall. For relaxation, the Recreation Center provides a gym, three outdoor pools, an indoor pool, a bubble enclosed ice skating rink, and various other activities. 7 THE SENIOR FREEPORT 8 CLASS OF HIGH SCHOOL Perseus Arias and Jimmy Mulligan work out a problem. During our voyage through Freeport High School, we have learned how important it is to express our own individuality, as well as to work and share with each other in groups. Stressing our own individuality has helped us to become more aware of ourselves and the goals that we wish to accomplish. 12 Karen Barry and Lisa Cofield in the auditorium. Working together offers us a sense of sharing, and shows us the importance of teamwork in the many aspects of life. This will aid us on our sail into the future by showing us that while we must follow our individual dreams and ambitions, working together will make life much simpler. No one knows exactly what the future holds but we can all be viewed as captains with life as our sea. Perhaps William Ernest Henley said it best: It matters not how strait the gate. How charged with punishments the scroll, We are the masters of our fate: We are the captains of our souls. Some work very hard, some think it's a bore. But among them all there is an outstanding corps, whose enthusiasm guarantees success to the class of '84! — L. A. Guttman M. Robinson The uniqueness of the class of 1985 may be attributed to the two dozen energetic and truly interested sophomores, who help to make their class succeed. They attend weekly meetings and are innovative and enthusiastic. We look forward to many exciting future events. — A. Anderson J. Bencivenga The freshman class is truly unique, but why? Could it be Mr. Grinnell? No. Then it must be Mr. Ferrante; but is he unique? No! It must be the freshman class. We surely hope that they are unique because the advisors certainly aren't. As a matter of fact, they probably are mundane to say the very least. — V. Ferrante R. In the time that you have shared with us I hope you have taken the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills with which to fashion a useful and satisfying career. I look forward to hearing of your success and I will take pride in knowing that the staff of Freeport High School contributed, in part, to that success. As you graduate from Freeport High School you will be remembered individually and collectively for your accomplishments and for the contributions you have made to the school and the community. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with you during the past four years. I wish you every happiness as you look forward to new challenges and new horizons. Voyageur 1983 has been designed through the combined efforts of all the editors and our advisor. Many obstacles were placed before us when the year began. We managed to overcome the difficulties by pulling together and helping one another, despite the fact, that we had little or no experience. In addition, many long hours of extra work were put into making this yearbook. I believe that Voyageur 1983 is truly unique, not because of the yearbook itself, but because of the class it represents. I wish to express my thanks to everyone who contributed to Voyageur this year. We hope that Voyageur 1983 will always hold those special moments from your senior year. Sincerely, Joyce J. As our voyage through Freeport High School comes to a close, we reflect on and remember days gone by. Our journey began in September of 1979. We set sail as novice freshmen, and for many of us our sophomore and junior years seem to have flown by. Those years were filled with learning experiences, athletics, artistic expression — whether it be music or art, and participating in class government. Perhaps, we and everyone else will remember the Class of 1983 as the class with a minimal amount of funds. Now, as we look toward the future, we realize we must embark upon a new journey and longer voyage. This is life. It will encompass our going to college, entering the armed forces, or finding a job. No one knows what the future holds, for Only Time Will Tell. We. the yearbook editors, sincerely hope we have created a book that will make for the fondest memories. 9 GOOD-BYE F.H.S. CLASS OF 1983
