In the beginning of this century, man was astonished by the miracle of flight. On December 17, 1903 in a small town called Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright succeeded in their “flying machine.” Twenty-four years later, Charles A. Lindberg ama ed the world by making the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He took off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, on May 20, 1927 and landed at Le Bourget Airport in Paris. The flight lasted 33l 2 hours. This great accomplishment, which seemed at the time an incredible feat, became trivial when compared to what the future held. Man no longer looked to the sky, instead he looked to the stars. On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 fulfilled the dreams of man by placing him on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. were the first men to achieve this goal. Man was still not satisfied. In 1976, the Viking I and II were sent to investigate Mars. Scientists noticed that all of the planets were in a straight line felt compelled to send the Voyageur I II to Jupitor, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. On April 12, 1981 the Columbia Space Shuttle made it’s first flight into space and returned safely. This year, on November 12, it was sent on a second successful flight. This Shuttle has now opened the doors to a New Era. 3
