On December 17, 1903 in a small town called Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright succeeded in their “flying machine.” Twenty-four years later, Charles A. Lindberg ama ed the world by making the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He took off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, on May 20, 1927 and landed at Le Bourget Airport in Paris. The flight lasted 33l 2 hours. This great accomplishment, which seemed at the time an incredible feat, became trivial when compared to what the future held. Man no longer looked to the sky, instead he looked to the stars. On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 fulfilled the dreams of man by placing him on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. were the first men to achieve this goal. Man was still not satisfied. In 1976, the Viking I and II were sent to investigate Mars. Scientists noticed that all of the planets were in a straight line felt compelled to send the Voyageur I II to Jupitor, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. On April 12, 1981 the Columbia Space Shuttle made it’s first flight into space and returned safely. This year, on November 12, it was sent on a second successful flight. This Shuttle has now opened the doors to a New Era. 3 Sharleen Sutton ordering a yearbook from Carol Ileana waiting for a friend in the lobby. Noreen, Sonya and two friends sell pretzels. Datid Bumpus Just as flight has progressed so have the students faculty and administration of Freeport High School. We too are at the beginning of a New Era. This school year, the students have become more involved in activities and sports than in the past few years. There is more to this era than becoming involved. Originality and pride are also stressed. This sense of pride has united not only the students among themselves, but also the students with the faculty. Most students will probably remember two, three, or perhaps more, teachers as friends, who have helped them progress. Our education and experiences at FHS will serve as our Passport to a New Era. 6 Michael (.older and Pam Kalimanis Amy Adler, Jane Roller, and Marianne Thomson Friends talking in the lobby. Each generation faces new challenges. Four years of education at Freeport High School have provided a basis for the class of ’82 to meet the challenges which will affect its future. Some of the graduates of the class of ’82 may become famous for their accomplishments and open for all of us the doors to a new era. It shall be an era of uniqueness. Each year, thousands of students graduate from high school, and take with them the knowledge of what they have learned throughout their high school years. Whether they go on to get a job, attend college, or join the armed forces, they use their education as a foundation for their future. Now is the time when we learn to grow with society and create our own space in which we will become more independent and mature. Here is where we must accept that many bonds will be broken, only to build new ones. Our memories, experiences and education are our passport to a new era. 9 Deirdre Dwyer and Sharlene Sutton 10 Guendalina Norris and Yvette Thomas Emilio Goez and Robin Sanderson Patty Sierra and Mr. Davis 11 Nancy Rosenberg discussing plans for the senior variety show with Michelle Colon. Senior Life is meant to be enjoyable, exciting, amusing and memorable. We were destined to make the very best of our limited time together. The Class of ’82 has shown notable creativeness. Only an inventive group of seniors could have brought harmony to this class. The FHS Class of ’82 has started “The New Fra.” Senior Punk Day is an example of the uniqueness and spirit of this era. The spirit that Punk Day arouse was carried through until Halloween. More seniors came in creative costumes than ever before. Traditionally, the senior class puts on a Variety Show. This show brings out the hidden talents in the class as a whole. This year we are fortunate to have Mr. Stanley Davis and Miss Julia V an de Water as our advisors. Mr. Davis has done Variety Shows in the past, but it’s been eight years since his last; and this will be the first for Miss Van de Water. Therefore, we are adding to this tradition a touch of “The New Era.” 41 Wendy (.iddons SENIOR PUNK DAY Michael Colder and J. Van de Water 42 Debbie, Stacie, and Karen Carol Maiorino Every senior class leaves behind it a special mark on Freeport High School. Each senior takes with him the memories of the unique moments his class experienced. The class of 1982 leaves behind it memories of Senior Punk Day, October 1st, 1981. We feel it was not only symbolic of the class spirit we possess, but symbolic too, of the present time. Although Senior Punk Day was created unofficially, we hope it will be recognized for what it was meant to be, a small show of our creativeness and unity. We hope we have left a sense of school pride in our wake. Our class will never forget Freeport High School; we hope it will never forget us. B. Bertaccini and her Survey class. Many of the experiences which lead to maturity are painful ones. However, there is a bright side to these difficult years. Not all of a student's time is spent on struggling with schoolwork. There are friendships, parties, sports, clubs, and just plain “hanging out”. In later years many will look back upon these days as the happiest time in their lives. Andre Cox shares a thought with Michael Franklin. Arlene Mayers and friends snack in the cafeteria on a relaxing break. 84 85 Greg and Cathy go home after a long day. Suprio C'haudhuri and Sridar Kowdly use cafeteria as study facilities, as do many students. Billy Mist and a friend during lunchtime. F.ric Schwekendiek and Angela Simpson enjoy their free time. NVcndy Gibbons. Alison I.egcndre, and Creola Walls share a very popular pastime. John Mugno relaxes in the lobby. Davis Abernathy and Troy Fullone hang out in the cave. Jon Sheppard on his way to class. Friends enjoy their lunch in the cafeteria. Wayne Omeir is distracted from his studies. Andre Edwards caught at an off moment. Maria Cabrera and Cheryl Gray compare the previous night's homework. Jose Zapatero at a quiet moment after a hard day's work. Bobby Courtney displays the new look in eye wear. Maurice Irby and a friend on their way home. I.aureen McKeown, Donna Matter, and Micelle Brac-chitta wait for the bell to ring. Kllyn Horne listens intently to her instructions. 91 At the top of the fashion of ’82 is the metallic look, the fashion world's first definite step towards a futuristic style. Gold, bronze, and silver are the three colors of this very adaptable look. Metallics are perfect for an evening outfit or for a lunch at Nunley’s. This style is very effective in accentuating fashion. Metallic accessories match perfectly with outfits of suitable colors, such as olive drab, sage or burgandy. If the metal clad android look is not to your taste, the fashion world has provided a line which is pure escapism. It’s a look which recalls the adventures on the high seas and tales of the Spanish conquest: it’s the pirate look. Included in this style of clothing are full-sleeved blousons high neck lines, and gathering at the waist with wide belts, and with knickers or full skirts in black or red. For a different side of the pirate-days clothing, snuggle into the romantic line a collection of toned down versions of the 19th century; blouses with elaborate lace and ruffles provide dash of elegance to the look. These particular styles from the Parisian designers is well accepted by the students. Leg warmers and head-bands are among the most favorite accessories of ’82. The fashion of the “New Era’’ promises to be not only novel, but stimulating as well because of the contrast that manages to interlock, rather than clash. Lynn Ries in a black and red striped sweater dress, red stockings and Robin Hood boots. Cheryse Pryor wearing a gold sweater and a wool coat. Kathy Fincken modeling a romantic-line ruffled blouse with blue velvet slacks. 92 Diedre Hanbury as a metallic android. Gina “Tesoro Feliz dressed in a thin striped black and with a bronze jacket and sweater. gold blouse, black pants and a wide metallic belt. Alison Legendre wears black knickers and a white sweater. Stacey Williams models the pirate Beth King in an off-white Paris line ruffled blouse, look, consisting of a high neck lined white blouson gathering at the waist with a wide belt. Mildred Menendez with another version of the pirate look. 93 Juan Coez with a nautical outfit, consisting of shorts and a pullover which have bold stripes and primary colors. Mark Young in jeans, a small collard shirt and an off-white pullover, characteristic of the rugged look. NEW ERA’S FASHION for The New Era is different. It’s fashion for man demonstrates that point as clearly as its spirit and creativeness. The New Era’s designs may be under the influence of the past styles, but they still retain their individuality. The brash rugged look of the past is still popular. However, for ’82 a touch of elegance is added to this traditional look. The use of small and buttoned-down collars, somber colors, such as olive, burgundy, and shades of brown and gray, and the European cut, have accomplished the taming of the previous look. A suede or leather jacket completes this look in the autumn and winter months. For men there is also a line which is pure escapism. It, too, recalls the adventures of the high seas, however, it embraces the docks and decks of today and not of the past, Merging bold lines and primary colors are part of the nautical elan. For the classical man the New Era presents a sense of the avant-garde without projecting alienation. This sensuous appearance is characterized by double-breated jackets, tailored shirts, narrow ties, loose pants, and laced shoes. The male of ’82 will have many choices in fashion. But no matter which style he chooses he w ill have a touch of elegance, a touch of the New Era. 94 Fernando Ramirez wears a leather jacket and casual pants. Joe DeSalvo dressed in the classical line, with a velvet double-breasted jacket and pants, button down collar shirt, and a thin knit tie. David McAndrews in a nautical hooded jacket with primary colors. Keith Young with another version of the rugged look. Michael Jackson modeling another version of the classical line, consisting of a double-breasted jacket and loose trousers. 95 GH The teachers of the New Era are of a great variety, in age, in culture, in nationality, and in race. All united, they present the various paths of the future. Though dedication and tireless hours of work the faculty has contributed to the expansion of the student's mind. When the word faculty is mentioned one must not forget to acknowledge the administrators, cafeteria staff, clerical staff, custodians, and matrons who keep the school running smoothly. The faculty has prepared the students and given them their Passport to different places, to different careers, and to the New Era. Students at FHS are fortunate to have over 200 courses from which to select their schedule. This challenges the students and encourages them to excel in whatever interests them, whether it is home economics, music, or liturature. The academic climate is such that students can comfortably fit into their proper groups, where they can work to the best of their abilities. The opportunities to excel are always present for those who strive for academic excellence. The education which the students have recieved at FHS serves as their Passport to the New Era. 111 Mr. Bessel and Victor Mooney work for accuracy. 112 Anna Rodrigue prepares a meal. Raquel Fernandez cuts out material while Vivian Baez examines the pattern. Home Economics offers many electives which appeals to a sizeable segment of the student body. The various courses range from food and its preparation to foreign foods, and from textiles and cloth to interior decoration. Home Economics also deals with the home, family relations, and child development. The skills which the students acquire in these classes will be very beneficial to them in the future. The training that they receive will always be utilized to the utmost. 114 Mrs. Feotaud helps out two students in her class. 115 Sabrina McKay whips up a storm. 116 The student body has many courses to choose from in the Industrial Arts Department. Some of these options include wood, metal, electrical, automotive, drafting, and printing shops. In these classes, students receive valuable vocational training and develop many useful skills. The teachers supervise and also aid the students. They even throw in some pointers here and there. After a few lectures on safety, the proper use of machinery and tools etc, the students are given the opportunity to work on individual projects in the different shops. In addition to the training, these classes offer students the satisfaction of seeing tangible evidence of the skills that they have acquired. The finished project gives the student a feeling of accomplishment. Debbie Blinn is distracted by the photographer. The computer industries are expanding every day. Computers will be responsible for much of the progress of our nation and of it’s people. F.H.S. is preparing students for their possible role in society by offering computer courses. There are many terminals which inhabit the new computer center. F.H.S. also prepares students for the business world. Accounting, typing, and shorthand are among the offered courses. Annette Wyche and Jessica Chase in typing class. Eric Brimmage and Yvette Me Dow ar 118 stracted from their work. Mr. I)rago shows Andre Fdwards how to use the computer. Anita Frederick looks over her typing assignment. 119 Cynthia Atant copying notes. Their purpose is not merely to pass away idle hours. These groups offer students an opportunity for self expression in a variety of fields. Young people with a special interest in drama, music, mathematics, computers, and Spanish, just to name a few, can find an outlet for their talents and ambitions in a large selection of after school activities. But there are some clubs that work to serve their school and community. These clubs are Honor Society, Tutoring Committee, and the Key Club. The Honor Society is a conglomerate of students who have achieved academic standards. This club offers its time to the community when it is requested. This year Key club, which has had low attendance in the past, has increased significantly in size and participation service. During the year Key Club has given Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas gifts for the elderly, and has participated in a Cerebral Palsey fund raiser. The Key Club is not alone in its outstanding services. The Tutoring Committee, though new, has been quite successful. The idea of the program is to aid students who are in need of academic assistance. A community organization which deserves recognition is the Explorer Post 406. The organization gives students an opportunity to be involved with the firefighting profession. We discuss an upcoming game, and when it’s over we replay a winning goal, touchdown, or homerun. Sports demand a combination of physical skill and strength, an alert mind, enthusiasm, purpose, and teamwork. They represent accomplishments for which the body must be trained, and for which a person must work at to become skillful. Not all of the students can participate in interscholastic atheletics; however, these students can become part of the program by giving their support. It is a close, hard working community, as well as an independent incorporated village. Originally known as Raynorstown, Freeport was founded in 1659 by Edward Raynor, a Hempstead Village pioneer. During colonial times seamen began to refer to the earliest settlement as “free port” since captains found they could sail through Jones Inlet and land cargo, avoiding the paying of duties at customs houses in major ports like Sag Harbor and New York City. Residents voted to make the name official in 1853. The community of Freeport succeeds in keeping up with the steadily changing pace of today 's world, while still preserving and acknowledging its historical aspects. The Freeport Historical Museum, in a building renovated at 350 South Main Street, provides items of historical value for all interested citizens to admire. Our Freeport Recreation Center is a truly beautiful complex with one indoor and three outdoor pools, a bubble enclosed ice-skating rink, a gym and various programs and activities which cover the full spectrum for all age groups. The Center has been lauded as the finest in the state. Freeport has numerous parks. Among them are Randall, Northeast, Waterfront, and Cow Meadow. Complete summer programs are conducted in the parks, including concerts. For the culturally minded, the Freeport Arts Council has everything from art shows and educational courses to weekend bus trips. Freeport's Police Department and one hundred year old volunteer fire department are a great source of pride to the community. Ising the latest equipment and techniques, they are responsible for protecting local residents and commercial establishments. The strong nautical theme is probably the most favored aspect of Freeport. Famous seafood restaurants line the eight and a half miles of waterfront. W ith vast fleets of open charter boats and commercial fishing vessels, the Village of Freeport has long been known as the “Boating and Fishing Capital of the East.” Freeport and its residents have twice been honored by the Long Island Tourism Commission for outstanding contributions toward the recognition of l.ong Island as a place to visit, regardless of the season. Its location allows for easy access to New York City or Jones Beach. It is evident that Freeport is a fine place to live and indeed a community to be proud of. As we explore and experiment with our interests, many of us will seek change and relocate. But regardless of where we go, we will retain memories of Freeport, the community which has provided each of us with a passport into the new era. 173 Within the Freeport Post Office, two attractive paintings adorn the walls. They were painted during the depression by William Gropper. Then an unknown artist, he was employed under the “New Deal policy. Today his work is priceless. While some stars, like Guy Lombardo and Broadway actor, Victore Moore, have occupied Freeport homes, others come here simply to work. This school year, Betty Davis came to our town to film part of the movie “Family Reunion. Freeport’s Post Office. 174 One of William Cropper’s paintings, situated on the west wall of the Post Office. Betty Da is and Mayor White. The Freeport Recreation Center, a truly beautiful complex. Helping Hands at the Recreation Center’s ice-skating rink. 175 FABULOUS WATERFRONT One feature that makes Freeport unique among other municipalities on Long Island is the waterfront, which is larger, has more boats, houses more people and does more business yearly than any other waterfront community. Woodcleft Canal, known nationally for its boats and commercial fishing, measures exactly one nautical mile long. Freeport’s Annual Great Canoe Races have been held on a Sunday in July for the past five years and attract amateur participants of all ages. For three years, the Village has been a starting point of exciting offshore power boat races, part of the national and international circuit of the sport. For the past four Septembers, the Village has been the site of a giant in-the-water, on-the-land boat show, and this event attracts spectators from all over. Seven years ago Freeport residents, aware that thousands came each year for fishing, decided to entice those visitors to the many “dry-dock” attractions of the Village. The effort has been a resounding success. 176 A view of Main Street. Freeport’s charming scenery, which influences many people to visit, is a major reason why the Long Island Tourism Commission has honored us for outstanding contributions toward the recognition of Long Island. Students do not have to go far to enjoy Freeport’s scenery. Next to the high school is placid Milhurn Pond. This serene location is also a scientific wonder. Although it is a fresh water pond, it does not freeze during the frigid winter months. Freeport scenery, enjoy it. 180 When starting out on any voyage, there is a need to purchase materials to go with you. There is no better place to do this than in your home town. Through the merchants’ ads, we are able to bring this yearbook to you. We, on the staff of Voyageur, would like all students to show their gratitude to the business persons by considering their product lines when making their next purchase. President - Monica Vaughn Vice President - Peggy Grant Treasurer - Micheal Colder Secretary - Beverly Mitchell Liaison - Wayne Covington The 1982 Voyageur has been created in a style notably different from yearbooks of the past. The first-time senior color section, the cover design, the novel Senior Life Section, which included pictures of the prom site and bands, the fashion pages in the Student Life Section, and the theme of the book have all contributed to this difference. I wish to express on behalf of the Voyageur staff my sincere gratitude to Mrs. Greenberg, Mrs. Frahme, Mr. Grempel, Miss Gutierres, Mr. Schildkraut, Mr. Raul Rodriguez, Mr. Barr, Mrs. Maiorino, Marie McAuley, and the Spanish community for their assistance, which enlightened our work load and helped to make our dream a reality. I want to give special thanks to Mr. McAuley. This is his eleventh year as adviser to Voyageur. How he has been able to endure it I do not know, but I will always be grateful to him. All the editors began the year with no experience. One might think that this was a drawback, but it became instead a positive factor. Fach editor did not concern himself with his section alone. Instead the editors helped each other to complete the various sections of the book, sometimes staying up until four o'clock in the morning to do so. We became sixteen brothers and sisters with one goal - Voyageur 1982. I thank them all sincerely for their dedication. There will always be a special place for them in my heart. I would also like to thank my family. The complexity of the task of putting together a yearbook and the amount of traffic which it has created in our home have put a strain on all of us. Fortunately it has brought us closer together. Without their help the job would have been impossible. Mom, Dad, Dag, I love you. We hope the ’82 Voyageur contains and brings back the special memories of your high school years. Sincerely, Jose Miguel Zapatero Fditor-in-Chief Boosters IJS-432 Congratulations-V.
