We are truly prepared for the future. The curriculum ranges from auto shop to theatre arts to A.P. Calculus. There are certain academic requirements for all students, however, the many electives help to make school an interesting and enjoyable experience. 108 Academics Academics 109 Many different doorways can lead to successful careers. BOCES, the occupational education program trains students for a career while they are still in high school. This program includes spending half of each day in regular high school classes and half at a BOCES center or at on the job training. The hoard of cooperative educational services offers a choice of more than 60 different courses, for example, hair styling, fashion design, aircraft mechanics, practical nursing or animal care. The centers provide the same equipment that is found in private industry. Most BOCES courses last two years, but some are for three years, and others only one. The BOCES faculty consists of men and women who used to work in the trades they are now teaching. The BOCES program gives its students a chance to gain a salable skill. Although this is not a guarantee that its graduates will get a job, it makes their chances a little better. CREATIVITY AT FHS The world of art is one in which students can learn to develop their imagination and become sensitive to their surroundings. This is made a reality in our art classes. Through such activities as drawing, painting and sculpting students may learn of all the things we admire in our studies of famous works of art. They become aware of the use of color, shape and texture as a means of expressing an idea. Those students who are not in a art class also have the opportunity to develop and use their artistic abilities. The Art Club, which was established this year gives its members a chance to explore the world of art independently. In order to share the results of their hard work with the rest of the school they opened an art store. This makes available to the student body and faculty the artistic efforts of our talented students. Academics 111 112 Academics Academics 113 Those students who wish to begin their college experience while still in high school, hate the option of taking one or more of the advanced placement courses. The courses that are offered are American History, Biology, Physics, Calculus and Surrey of Western World Literature. Advanced Placement exams are offered in each of the subject areas. A good score on this exam can earn a student credit for the course in college or permission to advance to a higher level course of study. These classes require hard work and a lot of study time but most students enjoy the challenge. This experience enables students to get a feel for college life and to build a strong background for higher levels of learning. 114 Academics Academics 115 A high school diploma is the primary requisite for advancement in American society. Although not impossible, success will be difficult without it thus, the education that we have received at Freeport High School is the first major step into the adult world. 4s we discovered, there were many paths to follow through our high school careers. Some chose to take a college preparatory course of study, others chose to study business or participate in the BOCES program. Upon completion of our studies many will go on to further education. Some are ready to begin their working careers and others will join the armed forces. Whatever our aspirations may be, the framework for our future has been established and we are ready to begin a new and challenging period in our lives. 116 Academics Academics 117 Activities 118 Activities Aclivitics 119 Director: Robin Regina Sutton Assistant Director: Crystal Winters Faculty Advisor: Stanley Davfs or CoMf LEFT: Sweeney tells widow Fairoak that hell take the house away if Lily doesn V marry him. You arc, at least in part, responsible for what the future generation will be. You showed us love - more than some of us have ever known. You’ve held us together and showed us what people can do when they work with each other. The tears you shed were far too many, and the aggravation you suffered was far too much, but you put up with it anyway, and now we know the true meaning of the word care. You may never sec your names in lights, but we don’t mind. To us you arc not idols, you're not a hero and a heroine, you’re not superhuman. You’re much more important. There have been events to remember and friendships to cherish. The completion of our high school education is but a stepping stone towards greater accomplishments. Our senior year has been filled with momentous historical events. We witnessed a change in the president, both in terms of the man and his political philosophy. The outstanding news event of the year was undoubtedly the release of our hostages in Iran. The return of these courageous men and women brought unity to our nation and joy to our hearts. The future beckons us to fulfil all our dreams and expectations. Ends give way to new beginnings as we prepare for the charted course to the future.
