However, the reason for attending high school is to receive an education. Freeport High School offers students many options whether they plan to enter the job market or to continue their education upon graduation. In order that all students may partake of a variety of subjects, courses are offered on many different levels. From Advanced Placement Physics to Driver’s Education, classes are geared to the students’ interests. Although there are some required courses such as English and gym, much of a student’s schedule is optional and may be filled with a multiplicity of electives. 164 165 Whether for college credit or just for fun, many Freeport High School students continue taking science courses throughout their high school career. For the first time this year an advanced placement course in Physics was offered. Although most of the students found the course difficult, almost all agreed that the course was beneficial in preparing for college. 166 Marine biology, although neither an A.P. or regents course, is one of the most popular courses at Freeport High School, Whether taking the course because of the many field trips (often to the beach), the pride in maintaining your own tank, a genuine interest in marine biology or possible all three; all of the students agree that it is a worthwhile and exciting course. 167 As more boys take Home Economics Classes, they are learning that ovens, as well as dirty pots and pan, actually exist. The pride of completing a project that you made yourself is the major appeal of the Industrial Arts Department. Taken by many students, both male and female, the shop classes enable students to learn a useful skill. 169 Although machines will never replace man, they can prove to be a valuable tool. At Freeport High School, students can work with many different types of inanimate teachers. Computers are programmed so that each student can work independently at his own pace. In addition, for those students who wish, there is the opportunity to learn to program the computers themselves. 170 To complete the various reports and papers assigned to them over the school year, students have access to the three high school libraries.
