Under the leadership of director Laura Held and advisor Mr. Stanley Davis, the club was able to combine Broadway professionalism with High-School lightness. The excellent cast, headed by Peter Sosnow and Georgia Ellis, superbly related the comical love story of a military man and his Putnam’s Landing girlfriend. Julie Elson, Phil Zezima, and Beani Robinson turned in fine performances. Few will be able to forget Detrius Zellner's portrayal of a blustery army sergeant. In all, the play turned out to be an extremely regarding experience for everyone, actors and audience alike. V KLETHE RAISES FUNDS FOR LUTHER E. The two doubles teams, Harry Woo and Neil Blechman, and Bret Israel and Marc Gross, displayed fine talent and were the key to several victories throughout the season. Andy Cleary (third singles) performed extremely well and earned the Most Improved Player award. The second singles player, Brian Blechman, with strong ground strokes and an impressive winning record, won the Most Valuable Player award. Last year’s awfard winner, Mariano Woo, first singles, consistently demonstrated his talent for tennis. The tennis team established a great record of sportsmanship this year. Through the efforts of Coach Emma, this sport will no doubt continue to rise in popularity at Freeport High. iw ! 1st ROW: M. Gross, T. Pirodsky, M. Woo, H. Woo; 2nd ROW: B. Blechman. A. Then the team took a sixth place in the South Shore Gymnastics Championships. One of the brightest highlights of the season was a new record set in rope climbing by Ernie Firpo, who chopped A seconds off the school record, setting a new record at 4.6 seconds. Congratulat ions are in order for team captains Rov Edel-stein and Ed Jacobs, Coach Keithline of Seaford, and to all the team members on their very succesful season. 93 HARRIERS BRING FAME TO FHS 1st ROW: E. Flaherty, C. Palmer, K. Murgo, R Fleming, A. Galbicka, J. Holub, Capt. The 1967 Cross Country Team was the best Freeport has had. Led by Bill Vil-leneuve and Team Captain Jim Holub, Freeport’s team won four outstanding victories this year. After scoring a 13-2 Division II record standing, this team decided they weren't going to be underdogs any longer. Freeport’s Harriers won the South Shore Athletic League Championship for the first time in the school’s history. A complete team effort then helped them to out distance the other 28 schools in the race. Three days after this triumph, the FHS Harriers comfortably beat another 21 teams to win the Bethpage Invitational Cross Country run at Bethpage State Park. But the team wasn't finished yet. They went on to capture the County Championship qualifying team for the state meet in Buffalo. Led by high-scoring Bill Villenueve and Jim Holub, Freeport finished SECOND in the Class A Championships. 95 Team Captain Paul Wehrum and Honorary Captains Dan Celentano, Leroy McManus, Fred Meyers, and Ron Benson Once again, in the tradition of Freeport High School, the football team fought long and hard to preserve the honor and integrity of the school, the team, and the game. This season we had our share of victory and defeat, yet it was the spirit of the students which spurred the team on to victor)' and chance which caused defeat. The 1967 team was particularly notable in its individual talent. The Big Three, McManus, Meyers, and Celentano, playing the line on both teams, gave little yardage up the middle on defense and provided fine blocking on offense. The Devils got great line backing from Mitch Brill and from Paul Wehrum, who also did superbly as offensive center. Jim McQueen proved to be tough for defensive tacklers. Twice this season he gained 80 yards in one game. Ron Benson was superlative in both rushing and pass catching. Ends Herring and O Meally gave Freeport a dangerous passing offense. Coaches J. Berman The Freeport High School basketball team, coached by George Emma, clinched the South Shore Division II championship and completed its regular season with a spectacular mark of 18 wins and no losses. The Devil Cagers. riding the tide of a quick and triumphant opening and gaining expertise. experience and confidence in every meeting, defeated Kennedy. Calhoun. Berner. Hewlett, and Long Beach in their last five regular games. Many of the five’s contests were won by huge margins, allowing Emmas bench to show its strength. Winning by as much as 25 points, not every game was a spectator’s delight, but Freeport fans were inevitably and consistently right behind their team. In the second round of the South Shore Tournament. Freeport’s streak was ended by a fine overall effort by Lynbrook. Although the game was close, and hard fought, the Lynbrook five outlasted our boys in the decisive closing moments registering a 57-53 upset. It was Mr. Emma’s coaching, though, that brought the Cagers from 4-14 season two years ago to this season's 18-0. It earned him the Daily News Coach of the Year award and the respect and admiration of FHS students. 100 1st ROW: J. Vailes, C. Jackson, J. Nunnenkamp, C. Brophy, N. Davis; 2nd ROW: W. Williams, R. Opening the schedule with a victory over Valley Stream Central and a loss to Lindenhurst, the team snapped’into winning form, out-hustling perennial Division II favorites Mepham and Calhoun, and handily defeating such top teams as Wantagh and Sea-ford. Throughout the season only the early loss to Lindenhurst, a controversial 19-19 tie with Baldwin and a lone league defeat (Kennedy) sullied the Matmen’s record. Contributing outstanding performances to an overall fine effort were co-captains Mitch Brill (10-0) and Chris Franklin (10-1) and senior Steve Trentecoste (7-3). 1st ROW: W. Kelly, W. Pina, E. It consisted of skits written and performed by Freeport High School’s graduating class. The voice of Pat Carty, the recreation of Bonnie and Clyde, the blending of many voices, the precision of the kickline, and the finale created excitement for the audience and cast and nostalgia for the Class of ’68. Months of planning and the dedicated efforts of all made Reflections of ’68” a show to remember.
