Focus on Freeport Voyageur 1966 is a looking glass focused on Freeport .. . old and new. The scenes depicted here have evolved into today's Freeport—the largest incorporated village on Long Island. Each of these photographs marks the beginning of a phase of growth of our town. The grist mill and powerhouse represent our industries. The Main Street-Merrick Road intersection symbolize today's thriving business district. Still more significant for us are the first schoolhouse, classroom, faculty, and band-representations of our dynamic educational progress. For a more precise exploration of this progress, Voyageur 1966 focuses on you. Behind this door there is a modest little office where a man came to work early in the morning and left late in the afternoon. Then one day in December of 1965 he didn't come to school, where he was to conduct an examination, for he died the night before. We of Freeport High School walk by the unobtrusive door in the lobby a little slower now. As we do, we remember our immeasurable loss and we feel the aching void left by the passing of our principal, Mr. John Wesley Southard. It is more than just a principal, however, that we have lost. Each one of us, as an individual, has lost a sincere friend; but Freeport High School, as an aggregate, has lost an entire aura of warmth, interest, concern, dedication and boundless enthusiasm, which ceaselessly radiated from him. Mr. Southard's record of accomplishments is commensurate with his outstanding personal characteristics. In 1922, he graduated from F.H.S. as the first four-letter man in the history of our school. After attending college at Springfield he returned to F.H.S. as a physical education teacher. From there, he worked himself up to the high position of principal of our school. We must not overlook the fact that Mr. Southard undertook the formidable task of supervising the successful execution of the various regulations and policies of our school, every day for the last fifteen and a half years of his life. During Mr. Southard's administration, a multitude of new institutions were added. A few outstanding examples are the commencement of Honors and Accelerated classes, programmed mathematics, an expanded business program, and the modern and fully equipped language laboratory. Through all of this, the already high standard of education at F.H.S. has reached even greater heights. And now he is gone,- or should we modify this and say that Mr. Southard has departed from us only in a physical sense. We can no longer talk to him about a personal problem, nor can we reach out to receive our diplomas from him on Graduation Day, but his accomplishments, his honor, and his moral strength will live on with us. It is for this reason that we, the Class of 1966, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. John Wesley Southard. 6 DR. WELLING SUPERINTENDENT MR. WARRELL MR. QUICK ASS'T. SUPT. ASST. TO SUPT. BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENTS MR. WILLIAMSON DR. OLSON ASS'T. SUPT. ASST. SUPT. The school year of 1965-1966 was characterized by the progressive policies of Dr. Welling, the Assistant Superintendents, and the Board of Education. These men have always formulated projects for the good of the students of Freeport and have handled all the other duties of their offices including maintenance and the budget never losing sight of the best interests of the taxpayers. We would like to sincerely express our thanks to these men who have been so dedicated to the community. Thanks go to all the members of the Board and to our Superintendent and his assistants both new and old without whom the Freeport school system would not be held in such high regard. MR. BAEHR MR. RENKEN ACTING PRINCIPAL This year the Administration has especially demonstrated its ability to come through in the face of adversity. All problems ranging from student requests to the installation of a computor-based system were handled with complete efficiency and thoroughness. The Guidance Department grew in number with the student body and was able to straighten out all the usual schedule difficulties. Through personal attention to every student the mechanization feared through the use of computers was avoided, and the students remained individuals. Graduating seniors are thankful for the help the Administration gave them in securing their futures, and all underclassmen look forward to another year under its progressive guidance. n ENGLISH MR. Moisture is Seeping through. It is The tears of one who Loved him, one very Close to him—his son. His qualities were wondrous,-Love knew no bounds,- it radiated From him and was absorbed . .. Selfishly. He was not drained . . . Love and joy came always. He is at peace, at peace Where the Mimosas grow. Their delicate leaves Rustle in the breeze, Rustle in Paradise. Take care Dad, take care. My love will never falter. A candle burns in Memoriam. A tear is shed in Memoriam. A prayer is uttered in Memoriam. Rest in peace, rest in peace. Each a world apart; Each lives a separate life, goes a separate way, dreams a separate dream. Feels a separate sorrow and a separate joy. Each stares into space With eyes that reveal His lifelong desires and lifelong strains. Suspicious eyes of failure and want Mingle with dreamy eyes of success and love. Each engrossed in Individual thoughts— Each one thinking of what The other may be thinking— Each one wondering What the other one has felt. What the other one has experienced. What the other one is looking for. And then the subway stops— And each one emerges from the car, and walks— his separate way to his separate house in some separate place. 30 JUDITH KRIEGER DIANE McNAMARA SECRETARY PAULA MORETTI SOCIAL SECRETARY On Life At birth Did I awake To taste a bit of Life To Love, to Hate, to Laugh, to Cry, To Die. You each had a goal in mind—to develop and to perfect the distinctive features of your life. As I look at you now, I take great pride in your accomplishments during your high school years. This pride is derived from your various achievements—your outstanding academic record, your great service to Freeport High School, and perhaps most important, your cultivation of lasting friendships. Surely your outstanding record will guide each one of you toward success and good citizenship. Voyageur 1966 is an illustration of your high school career—your clubs, your athletics, your various organizations and yourselves. In the years to come, these pages will hold for you many fond memories of your life at Freeport High School. The vocational program enables our students to take advantage of a number of additional courses. There are seven subject offerings at the present time. These consist of Auto Body Repair, Building Maintenance, Small Engine and Outboard Repair, Service Station Mechanic, Food Services, Sewing Services, as well as Landscape Services. Boys and girls who are enrolled in the vocational program must meet certain requirements. These students must successfully complete their academic programs in order to be eligible for a diploma. Although vocational education and general education seem similar, there is a distinct difference between the two. The goal of the Vocational program is immediate employment at the termination of the high school education. With the enthusiastic cooperation of our Administration, the Student Council has assumed an active, and sometimes controversial, role in student affairs. In order to facilitate its actual governing processes, the entire structure of the Student Council underwent a dynamic revision. A new, flexible constitution was adopted, an extra officer was added to the Executive Committee, and the system of representation was changed from the homerooms to the social studies classes. This transformation has proven to be extremely successful. Among the Student Council's activities, we can look back on the incession of the juke box in the cafeteria, the Muscular Dystrophy drive, the establishment of a scholarship fund, the expansion of the activities ticket, the drive for gifts for our soldiers in Vietnam, the establishment of a dress code, and Senior Privileges. Perhaps the most significant contribution of the Student Council has been the establishment of a precedent. In previous years, Freeport High School did not have an effective student government. This year the void has been filled by an extremely successful Student Council. 1st ROW—K. McKenna. L. Azzara, R. Fishel, M. Armstrong. C. Schuh, J. Tuitt, J. Messing. B. Bird, G. Katz, V. MARY KAY McMAHAN PRESIDENT ALBERT WALLIS VICE PRESIDENT TEDDY KLEMPNER SECRETARY-TREASURER REPRESENTATIVE JON GUTTMAN STUDENT COUNCIL Best Actor and Actress—Al Wallis and Judy Kinberg As early as last spring, the Masque and Wig Club began its activities by electing its officers for the 1965-66 school year. Mary Kay McMahan, Al Wallis, Teddy Klempner, and Jon Guttman were elected President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer and Student Council Representative, respectively. Starting with the first week of school, activities were under way to organize try-outs and to set up rehearsals. The cast of The Solid Gold Cadillac was selected and daily rehearsals were held during the months of September, October, and November. Under the direction of Mary Kay McMahan and Al Wallis and the work of Mr. Davis, the advisor, the production took shape and was presented at the High School on November 12 and 13, 1965. Several of the leading roles were played by Judy Kinberg, Laura Miller, Teddy Klempner, Al Wallis, Mike Schulberg, Barry Blue-stein and Glenn Rogers. At the end of November, the officers, committee heads and Mr. Davis met to decide on the selection of new members. The decisions were made on the basis of the contributions of each candidate to the production of the play. Through these various activities. Masque and Wig has manifested itself as a significant and influential organization in Freeport High School. no lit ROW: T. Klempner, J. Kinberg, J. Krieger, P. Roth-stein, M. Futterman, P. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America grew out of the Horace Mann Centennial in 1937 and is a project of the National Education Association and its affiliated state and local organizations. The Leo F. Giblyn Chapter of the F.T.A., under the supervision of Mrs. Thompson, is primarily a service organization for students interested in embarking upon teaching careers. All members of the club are active teachers' aides and thus gain valuable first-hand experience in the educational field. Much information in the form of guest speakers, literature, and films was made available to each member. Senior members of this club are eligible for special F.T.A. scholarships, made possible by a number of fund-raising projects throughout the year. 20 HISTORY CLUB The History Club tackled a number of projects this year, covering both yesterday's history and today's history-in-the-making. Concerned with the situation in Viet Nam, the group decided to give its support to our government by sending candy and toys to the children of Viet Nam for Christmas. The members worked very hard at the cake sales held to raise money for the venture. In the fall of 1965, the History Club took a trip to New York City and spent the day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There the history of all sections of the world and of all peoples was traced from the beginnings of civilization to the present time through paintings, sculpture and jewelry. Various speakers were guests of the club. Jane Sparacino and Craig tnglis spoke about their trips to the Netherlands and Austria respectively. In addition, Tom Snijders from the Netherlands addressed the group. 1st ROW: S. Siebert, C. Yvin, L. Thompson, M. A. Basta, C. Roemer, 2nd ROW: K. Goldstein, I. Kessler, D. Wild, J. Wechsler, D. This year, the Freeport Chapter of the National Honor Society had a total membership of fifty-one. In June, 1965, eighteen students, each with a minimum average of ninety percent, became members; in February, 1966, the remaining thirty-three students, each with a minimum average of eighty-five percent, were inducted. This organization, whose members are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service, has played a significant role in Freeport High School. Several members put up the bulletin board in the main lobby. During Career Day, volunteers from the Honor Society acted as ushers. On Teachers' Conference Day, Honor Society members acted as ushers once again. At several evening functions during the year, members sold refreshments. The Freeport Chapter of the National Honor Society has participated in community affairs as well. During the month of January, 1966, members went from house to house collecting for the March of Dimes. As a result of these accomplishments, our chapter of the National Honor Society has proven itself to be not only a group of academically talented students, but also an organization which has participated to a great extent in school and community affairs. However, the phrase non-select has no bearing on the quality of the undertakings of the chorus. It has performed with a dedicated attitude works of a serious nature as well as popular music. The Freeport High School Mixed Chorale is one of the most outstanding musical groups in the school. Under the leadership of their director, Mr. Kirk M. Dunklee, the chorale has acquired extremely professional characteristics. The repertoire of the chorale contains a variety of classical, contemporary, and popular music. In December, the Mixed Chorale performed a major choral work, Vivaldi's Gloria. This year the Freeport High School Mixed Chorale has come to be known as one of the better choruses on Long Island. Because of its success this year, the Chorale has high hopes for the future. 129 Mixed Chorus Winter Concert 131 Edward Young TENNIS 1st ROW: Mr. Terry, A. Cleary, B. Lerner, B. Blechman, J. If the frequency of this statement's pronouncement is any measure of its validity, we have a football team to be proud of. We remember the vivid scenes of the fall season, the lines of strain in the faces of team members and coach, struggling against exhaustion and desperation. And it is not easy to forget how they returned to struggle harder each week. The time and sweat they sacrificed requires much more credit than their record affords them. Our team played and it lost, but nothing has changed at Freeport—football is still king. Teddy Barnett, Mr. Marcino, Jimmy Wehrum. 135 136 137 WRESTLING 1966 1st ROW: P. Thompson, $. Teller, J. This excellence is the goal coach Bessel achieved with Freeport's 1966 cross-country team. The boys' record is impressive. They gained a second place finish in the South Shore Division A Varsity and JV championships. A later effort carried them to first place in the Nassau County Division B standings. The most convincing achievement in excellence was attained when the Freeport Harriers placed second in the New York State Division B Championships. Approximately five or ten minutes and a couple of gym sneaker exchanges later, a group of girls in red gym suits appear, eager to learn sportsmanship and have fun in the after school girls' sports program. This program, under the leadership of Miss Gottlieb and Miss Schuler, has had an extremely successful season. 'Throughout the whole school year, sports from table tennis to gymnastics, hockey to bowling are offered to any girl willing to spend two afternoons a week playing the sport of her choice. Girls that participate in after school sports are eligible to become members of the Girls' Athletic Association or G.A.A. This organization requires that the girl have been a student leader for at least one year or achieve 125 points for being in at least four sports throughout the year. Points are for such things as attendance and membership on an honor team. At the girls sports assembly, girls earning 125 points receive a shield, those 300 points, a letter,- and those 475 points, a gold key. 149 BOWLING HONOR TEAM GIRLS’ ROW 1: D. Perkel, S. Ward, E.
