1962 VOYAGEUR FREEPORT HIGH SCHOOL I FREEPORT, NEW YORK FOREWORD As we face another of the many crossroads of our lives, what thoughts pass through our minds? We recall the past, its joys as well as its sorrows, its triumphs as well as its defeats. We consider what the future holds for us and what we must do to fulfill its promise. We must now hesitate amidst the barrage of decisions with which we are faced and contemplate our past accomplishments, successes, and failures. We must regard the numerous decisions which we have made in the past and their present effect gn our lives. We must consider the counsel of our parents and teachers in making these decisions. With these deeds accomplished, the difficulties which may be encountered in making the decisions concerning our future will be considerably lessened. Whatever our decisions be concerning further education, we shall always have the numerous memories of our high school career to give us confidence as we face the crossroads which we shall encounter later in life. As we turn through these pages in the future, the pleasant reminiscences will serve as a reminder of our past goals and endeavors. It is the Voyageur Staff's sincere hope that each individual attain these goals. By using the theme Crossroads, in the 1962 Voyageur, the Staff hopes to portray in retrospect the year which has presented to us the first of the many crossroads that we shall encounter throughout our lives. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATE ON GRADUATES....... 20 UNDERGRADUATES . . 74 ACTIVITIES.........100 ATHLETICS R-TIS 136 ADVERTISEMENTS .... 162 A DEDICATION In his hope of tomorrow does man renew his faith; for, in times of crisis, the large specter of the future uplifts the man from his common labor and transports him to the realm of hope. In this realm he renews his strength — strength to live, strength to work, and strength to endure. It is in the hope of tomorrow that we make our plans for today, and it is in the realization of these plans that we give our lives meaning. We, the Class of 1962, are the planners and leaders of tomorrow. It is imperative that we hold tomorrow as our guide, today as our teacher. Upon our shoulders falls the fate of the world, and in our hands lies the future of our nation. Each one of us must now go his own way in life, to fulfill his duty as a citizen of the world. In this duty we must not fail. Therefore, we choose as our beacon, hope, and under its guiding light we find our way. Thus, because of its importance in our future and our lives, the Class of 1962 dedicates this yearbook to The Hope of Tomorrow. TO THE HOPE OF TOMORROW ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION Now that we are firmly established in our new high school, we realize how great and important our Board of Education is. Although the student body as a whole takes their work for granted, the Board of Education is nevertheless behind all of our school activities. Under the leadership of its President, Mr. Hugh Erwin, the Board of Education has succeeded in making our school one of the most well run schools on Long Island. This past year, upon the retirement of Dr. Dodd, the Board of Education was faced with the task of selectina a new Superintendent of Schools. They finally chose Dr. John Henry Martin to succeed Dr. Dodd. Under Dr. Martin's expert leadership a fine future is assured for Freeport High School. The Board of Education, although behind the scenes to a large extent, devotes many hours to the planning of our school affairs and events. We, the student body, are truly appreciative of their hard work and devotion in making school life more pleasant for every student in the High School. When remembering our school days, we will never forget them. Mr. Roy Gockley Vice President Mr. Hugh Erwin President Mr. Paul Garbo Mr. Clifton Smith Mr. Herbert Bachr 8 SUPERINTENDENTS OF SCHOOLS ADMINISTRATION AND GUIDANCE Ever since our first days in Freeport as seventh graders, we have depended on the Administration and Guidance Departments for advice and help. Miss Mary Didas, Dean of Girls, and Mr. Henry Puff, Dean of Boys, have spent many extra hours helping students plan their schedules and fill out college applications. They have advised them on which colleges to apply to and on their chances of entrance. Mr. Richard Reed and Mr. Walter Lucas, new this year to the Freeport High School Guidance Department, have worked conscientiously on vocational guidance. They have aided many students in choosing their careers and have often been a help to them in securing jobs. Mr. Michael Liebman, another new member of the Guidance Department, has done a competent job as Sophomore Guidance Counselor. As some of you approach, you who have already set your goals and made your plans for the future, the light turns green. For the next few years you will study, join the military service, or learn a trade. As others of you approach, the light turns amber, signalling caution. This should indicate to you a need to give serious thought to your future and consideration to the signs at the intersection. Are you willing and ready to travel down Study Lane, Job Avenue, Service Street? Next, the light turns red. At this stop signal, some of you should take stock of your life and determine to make more use of it. You should select the road that will help you succeed in a mature, constructive way. We can hope that whether the light turns green, amber, or red as you approach the Crossroads, you will find that the strength of your character, the courage of your convictions, and the hope in your future will remain steadfast as you travel on your Road of Life in the roles of a patriotic American, a responsible citizen, and a devoted homemaker. What does the Key Club International build? Through its many and varied activities, the Key Club builds character, leadership, and initiative in its members, while serving the school and the community. Service manifests itself in many ways. Under the skillful guidance of Mr. George Moser, the Freeport High School Key Club has done much to serve the school and the community. By selling programs at the football games for the Fathers and Boosters Club, selling programs at the basketball games, adopting a needy family at Christmas, making and selling Christmas wreaths, and sponsoring the Miss Freeport High School contest, the Freeport High School Key Club has fulfilled its purpose enviably. 104 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY One of the foremost aims of every Freeport High School student is to be inducted into the National Honor Society. Under the able leadership of Miss Mary Didas, our chapter has been of great service to the school. Conducting the annual Scholarship Drive and providing ushers at assembly programs are only two of its many services which fulfill the organization's four cardinal principles: Service, Character, Leadership, and Scholarship. The flaming torch signifies the purpose of the Society: to bear forward the searching light and to keep burning a higher ambition for the enduring values of life. SEATED: Secretary, C. A beautiful and uplifting sound of music gently ushers in our graduates. Our colorful and illustrious F.H.S. Band, under the expert tutelage of Dr. J. Maynard Wettlaufer, is always on hand, devotedly contributing to the spirit of the occasion. The F.H.S. Band has had a long history of custom and tradition. Since the idea was conceived for a high school band in 1929, our talented musicians have performed at Sunday afternoon concerts, Spring Concerts, Graduation exercises, and assemblies. In the early fall, the band had the great distinction of participating in the United Fund Parade. It played in the festive Toyland Parade and the impressive Memorial Day exer- cises. At our beautiful and inspiring Christmas, we heard the debut of a new Freeport High Orchestra. In reality, this was the revival of the string section of the band which was omitted due to split session a few years ago. In the Spring, the Band and Orchestra Mothers presented a dinner honoring the Senior members of the Band. At this event the highly coveted Arion award was presented. This award is presented to the outstanding Senior in the Band who possesses the qualities of service, leadership, and character. Because of the enthusiasm and diligence of the band members, the F.H.S. band and orchestra has continued to be a source of great pride for Freeport. Dr. J. Maynard Wettlaufer Director 117 FIRST ROW. GIRLS’ CHORUS The audience is hushed ... a harmonious blending of musical notes enraptures the student body. This year Miss Miriam Roberts with the aid of Pres. Linda Southard and Vice Pres. Josephine Bennett, led the Senior Girls' Chorus to new vistas. The group has admirably succeeded in maintaining the high standards and the precedents set by past groups. The members acquired a new appreciation for good music and also an understanding into the different methods and styles employed by various composers. The annual Christmas program was highlighted with the traditional candlelight processional, as well as such songs as Cherry Tree Carol, Come All Ye Faithful, and the stirring Ave Maria. This year's Christmas program will certainly be remembered as one of the most beautiful assemblies of the year. In addition to singing at the many assemblies throughout the school year, these girls frequently perform at such affairs as the Sunday afternoon music concerts, the Spring Concert, and the Commencement services. It is for their ardent efforts and their devotion, countless hours to rehearsing, as well as for their excellent performances, that these girls deserve our highest esteem and acclaim. This year, the chorus played a major role in the Christmas and Easter assemblies, as well as in the Spring Concert. During the Sunday afternoon concert, which was held in February, a selected group of boys forming an ensemble sang Aura Lee. This group of singers constantly displays its versatility to every audience for which it performs. During this year's Christmas Assembly, the chorus gave an excellent performance when they sang a selection of Christmas Carols which included songs that varied in both FRONT ROW, L. to R: N. In order to be able to participate in this program, the members of the mixed chorus had to be chosen by Miss Roberts after competing in a series of auditions. The job of the students in this group does not end with the numerous rehearsals and preparations for their programs, or with the actual performances themselves. On the contrary, the members of the mixed chorus attend classes taught by Miss Roberts in which they not only learn the fundamentals of music and the backgrounds of the various musicians of the world, but also develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art of music. Under the auspices of its able adviser Mr. Burnett, this organization has made many distinct innovations, one of which is the practice of presenting two plays per year instead of one. Earlier in the school year, the club pre- sented the play, My Three Angels, with Fred Terranova, Caroline McIntyre, and others in the leads. Their next production was The Visitor, presented before a school assembly on March 29. In the latter production, John Studer, Tim Cullen, Bob Sweeney, and Anita Saltz starred. David Simson was host student to Marco di Nola of Milan, Italy; and John Vorbeck, to Fernando Gonzalez del Riego of Lima, Peru. The boys attended classes and observed the way of life in suburban Freeport. The student body made them feel very much at home and showed a sincere interest in learning of living conditions and problems in Italy and Peru. Fernando remarked that he preferred the American system of education, in which the students select courses, to his own, in which all students must take a prescribed program. After graduating, Fernando hopes to return to the United States to study textile engineering. Marco was impressed by the American school system because it gives all Americans the equal opportunity to further their education. Marco plans to make a career in economics and politics. The three weeks flew past all too quickly, and we unwillingly had to bid them farewell. Marco di Nola Italy Fernando Gonzalez del Riego Peru Through the members of the Radio Club, we shall always be able to keep in contact with Exchange Students from different corners of the globe. 128 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA To promote a deeper appreciation of the joy's and satisfactions of homemaking; to further interest in home economics; to better family life, creative leadership, and wholesome recreation are the high ideals held by the Future Homemakers of America. ROUTE ’62 135 ATHLETICS I The swamping we gave Levittown will long be remembered in Freeport track history. Here Al Starks follows Bob Gross across the finish line of the 880 yard run. Even though the season was unsuccessful, Freeport's hoopmen provided plenty of action. Here Bob Nugent drops one in during the Baldwin game. c s p o ROSSROADS T S There is always one moment during the season of any sport that will be remembered for the rest of the athlete's life. Maybe it's the winning basket, a tough goal line stand, or just a feeling the player gets when he knows he has performed his duty well. Sometimes the fans can appreciate it too, usually not. It's one moment that makes all the defeats seem less important and all the practice sessions seem not so gruelling. These will be remembered fondly in all the years after graduation. On this page we have tried to capture some of those moments, the highlights of the year. These, then, are the SPORTS CROSSROADS. 138 • ’ The cross-country team's success came from drive of individual members. Joe Hilton shows that kind of drive as he digs out the last 100 yards of S.S.A.L. meet. The Baldwin game is traditionally the high point of the football season. This year was no exception, although we bowed to the Golden Waves. Lou Jackson is scoring the only Freeport touchdown of the game. Freeport hos a winning wrestling team this year, and meets drew many fans. Above, Neil Baselice has his hand raised after defeating his Mas-sapequa opponent. 139 Above, Bobby Jackson goes around his left end. At right is Coach Bill Ashley instructing co-captains Bill Green and Lou Jackson. Freeport has the best record for any football team over the years since Mr. Ashley became our coach. In addition to being football coach, Mr. Ashley is our Director of Athletics and in this way he is responsible for the fine showing made by all Freeport teams. FOOTBALL TEAM Freeport has always had outstanding football teams, and this year was no exception. Under able coaching by Bill Ashley and the leadership of co-captains Billy Breen and Lou Jackson, the Red Devils had another successful season. Although not as good as past years, the team's record of five wins and three losses is nothing to be ashamed of. The team was cheered to victory by our new Pep Club and the faithful cheerleaders. The most exciting game of the year was against Sewanhaka. Freeport came from behind in the second half on several outstanding plays by senior quarterback, Danny Ciotti. The traditional game with Baldwin ended in disappointment when we bowed to the Golden Waves. With several key men returning and just out of force of habit, Freeport is sure to produce a fine 1962 team. FRONT ROW, L. to R: Manager G. Guttman, J. Yeno, B. Comrie, N. Shefferman, A. Meinhold, B. FOOTBALL Under the able guidance of coaches Natterer and Nickla, our J.V. team broke even with a shameless record of 4 wins and 4 losses. Although small in number, the team was big in willpower. After a poor start, they finished the year by downing the traditional rivals, Baldwin and Hempstead — a feat the varsity could not match. The outstanding player from the J.V. squad was Howard Jacobsen, who sparked the team at half back. The J.V. team is actually a sparing ground for future varsity teams. Probably the most frustrating of all was the fact that they lost many of the games by only a few points. The cheerleaders and fans screamed; and Cardone, Mu-gent, and Terry really hustled on the court, but those few baskets we needed to win always evaded us. The J.V. fared a little better with a record of 8 for 10. Basketball is still popular in F.H.S. and perhaps next year well have a winning team. WRESTLING Pawelko in action. As the wrestling team closes its season, the performance of the team can be looked back upon with both praise and honor. The grapplers, under the expert guidance and leadership of Coach Zuaro, closed the season with a record of nine wins and two losses. After losing the first match to Mepham, the team came back to win eight in a row. They then suffered a one point loss to Ocean-side, and won the next match. CROSS COUNTRY Coach Augustine has a right to be proud of his Red Devils. This year's team had the best record of the fall sports with 6 wins and 3 losses. One of the losses was to Massapequa who nosed ahead to win by four points. The team worked hard, and in the S.S.A.L. Championship meet they swamped the Chiefs. That meet was the highlight of the year. Although we bowed to Sewanhaka and Oceanside, the team's performance drew many favorable comments. The team did well not because of any single runner but by its depth which is a fine tribute to Coach A. At left are the senior lettermen led by captains Bob Gross and Roger Brown. They are, from left to right, Clint Watson, Robin McNutt, Joe Hilton, Dave Simson, and Ronny Kern. These boys, junior Frank Thomas, and sophomore Ed O'Brien were the backbone of the team and deserve the credit for the year's fine record. 144 RIFLERY In league competition this year, the riflery squad placed second with an 8-2 record. This was a commendable feat considering the breaking in of a new coach and the lack of experienced J.V. marksmen to replace last year's graduating senior. The squad consists of seniors — Ronny Powell and Joe Cattano; juniors — Rick La Barbara, and Ernie Krieger; and sophomores — Dennis Posa and Robert Sparling. KNEELING: R. After starting out slowly, the Freeport High School Bowling Team made an excellent recovery which culminated in its capturing the South Shore Athletic League Section II bowling championship. With just two matches left during the regular season Freeport had a 31-19 record and trailed South Side, who had a 36-14 victory, by 5 games. Since each match is worth 5 games (points), Freeport's only choice lay in beating South Side, its next opponent by a great enough margin to remain ahead of third place East Meadow (30-20) and Mepham (30-20), who both trailed Freeport by one game. The team knuckled under and beat South Side with a score of 5-0 and tied for first place. STANDING: L. to R: R. Jones, D. Durland, R. Carillo, P. Stolberg, A. Thelss, B. Von Leuen, J. To end the season the Honor Team represented Freeport at the Play Day at Baldwin High School keeping up our fine record of fair play and volleyball skill recognized in all our girls' sports. TABLE TENNIS Despite the taunting Oh, do you wrestle too?, this year's table tennis players bravely embarked on their journey each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon to the outermost extremes of the basement. The moisture did not dampen spirits, but the heat certainly bolstered many a moral. After many practices and a ladder tournament, the Honor Team was chosen. They improved steadily throughout the season until they were able to maneuver the ball like amateur Globe Trotters. They made a fine showing for Freeport in the Honor Team Playday and also performed well against adults at the half-time of the students faculty basketball game. BOWLING The familiar words, I got a strike! or Oh, no another gutter ball, bring back many memories to the girl bowlers for FHS. They remember the mad scramble for balls, or that split they came close to making. Although they were unsuccessful in their game against Valley Stream, and in their competition at Honor Team Play Day, they showed fine spirit and progress in the game. ARCHERY Last spring the Robin Hoods of Freeport High School practiced on the athletic field two days per week. Miss Schuler gave pointers to the experts as well as encouragement to the neophytes in the sport. By the end of the season all had conquered stance. aiming, and shooting. Their efforts were moderately rewarded when the Honor Team placed in the middle of a field of twenty teams at Play Day at Mal-verne. FRONT ROW, L. to R: B. Watson, J. Miller, P. Ar-curi, B.
