FREEPORT HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH BROOKSIDE AVENUE FREEPORT. NEW YORK MA 3-2100 J. WESLEY SOUTHARD. Principal IRVING B. FRANKLIN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Getting To Know You Class of 1961: Getting to know you and to know all about you has been ray responsibility and privilege for the past six years. In September of 1955 I called out your names in order to assign you to home rooms in the Seventh Grade. I learned to know a few of you then—those on honor or high honor and those whose actions sometimes needed my attention. In the Eighth and Ninth Grades I learned to know more of you—those who continued high in scholarship and were inducted into our National Junior Honor Society, those who made various teams, those who won the prize speaking contests. By the time you were Tenth Graders, I knew many more and followed with interest your growth and development as Sophomores. Then, during your Junior year, your qualities as leaders, as good citizens of our school community, as members of our athletic teams, musical, dramatic, and publishing organizations helped me know you even more. Finally, in your Senior year, it has been my good fortune to become even closer to you—to know something about your ambitions and dreams, and to see how you have mastered the first step in the realization of your goals. As you leave Freeport High School now for various walks of life, you have my sincere wishes for success in whichever field you choose to enter and my feeling of assurance that you have been well prepared to meet the challenges Life will put before you. May God bless you all. Sincerely, J. Wesley Sou iard Principal JWS:VM

1961 difficult. However, we still found time to participate in a host of activities and dance to the dreamy music of our Prom, Aquataisia , a wonderful and successful affair — as befitted the Class of '61. We good-naturedly joked about homework, the cafeteria food, the peeling plaster — in short, just about everything. Then, just as we felt we had become acquainted with all our surroundings, we prepared to move out of the old arid into the new FHS. We, the Seniors, were now the ruling, the privileged class. As such, we played an important role in getting to know the new school — different from the role we played as Freshmen getting to know the old school. We scurried about taking College Boards, scholarship exams, and applying to colleges. Somehow we managed to put on the Senior Play, On Borrowed Time , the Variety Show, and the Senior Prom — and Graduation. That is what we did as a class: We went to dances, assemblies, games. We joined school clubs, activities and sports. We talked about ourselves, our school, and the world. We wore crazy clothes and followed foolish fads. Some of us worked hard; others played harder. It was nice, wasn't it, Getting to Know You? Mortho Bryant President Jane Erwin Secretary Joni Verona Social Secretary Mr. Reed Faculty Adviser Stella Pavakis Vice Pres.
