CLASS OF Twenty years from now, when you happen to be leafing through this yearbook, what events, what memories, will come winging back to you? As an individual, you will no doubt look back with mixed emotions — those of joy and sorrow, success and failure, laughter and tears. As a member of the class of '61, however, what will you remember? Our thoughts first stray back to that momentous September day in 1957 when we meekly entered high school as lowly Freshmen. It was certainly a year of Getting to Know You as we became acquainted with our teachers, the school, and — most important — each other. As bonafide Freshmen we could attend G.O. assemblies, participate in sports and various organizations, and mingle with the upperclassmen. As Sophomores, we gained in stature. We were finally familiar with the school, but we were still getting acquainted with each other — particularly the new transfers from Roosevelt. We began to experience the encompassing Red Devil Spirit at football games, and wrestling matches. It was also a year of adjustment — getting to know Regents and the split session day. Our Junior year was academically our most 24

1961 difficult. However, we still found time to participate in a host of activities and dance to the dreamy music of our Prom, Aquataisia , a wonderful and successful affair — as befitted the Class of '61. We good-naturedly joked about homework, the cafeteria food, the peeling plaster — in short, just about everything. Then, just as we felt we had become acquainted with all our surroundings, we prepared to move out of the old arid into the new FHS. We, the Seniors, were now the ruling, the privileged class. As such, we played an important role in getting to know the new school — different from the role we played as Freshmen getting to know the old school. We scurried about taking College Boards, scholarship exams, and applying to colleges. Somehow we managed to put on the Senior Play, On Borrowed Time , the Variety Show, and the Senior Prom — and Graduation. That is what we did as a class: We went to dances, assemblies, games. We joined school clubs, activities and sports. We talked about ourselves, our school, and the world. We wore crazy clothes and followed foolish fads. Some of us worked hard; others played harder.
