You have instilled in us, through your American History classes, the importance of international brotherhood in achieving peace in a troubled world. As a result of your instruction, we better realize the important role our country plays as a symbol of freedom and eternal hope, a democratic bulwork against the rising tide of conflicting ideologies. We will always remember your sincere and understanding ways and the manner in which you have kept our interests uppermost in your thoughts. We wish to say thanks for all that you have conveyed to us, both as a teacher and as a friend. With the hope that this small token will express in part our true feelings, we dedicate our yearbook, the 1956 Voyageur, to you............. Charlotte 0armcn ?.. «l : M cMdmini At ration oard o Education It is axiomatic that a school system succeeds or tails depending on the caliber ot its BOARD OF EDUCATION. We are indeed fortunate to have men of such high standing on our board in Freeport. Mr. Leo F. Giblyn and his associates are men of foresight, integrity, and vision. We are profoundly indebted to them for their sincere interest and participation in our school affairs. MR. CLIFTON B. SMITH Vice-President MR. HUGH ERWIN MR. HAROLD PEARSON DR. E. FREEMAN MILLER Superintendent of SchoolA Dr. Dodd and daughter DR. JOHN W. DODD is known to every boy and girl in the Freeport school system. From the time we started in kindergarten until the final year, this leader in education has made it a practice to visit all the classrooms in every school from time to time. How well we remember his enthusiastic greetings, his words of praise and his appreciation of our efforts. His dynamic personality and kindly manner have made each one of us feel that he is a friend as well as an educator. The wise execution of the demanding job he holds as superintendent of our large school system has earned him a place of distinction and importance in our community. Dr. Dodd is an outstanding example of a person who has done his utmost to further the ideal of the promotion of international good will and understanding. His work in both civic, religious, and educational programs has earned him this distinction. The people of Freeport, as well as the students and faculty, may be very satisfied and proud of our Superintendent for all that he has done to help the young people. 9 MR. J. WESLEY SOUTHARD MR. SOUTHARD, INGE. AND HEE JOON Principal CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1956 You, as a class, are living in a revolutionary period of history. You have seen the atom harnessed, the hydrogen bomb invented, and large parts of the world revolting against imperialist rule. You have seen cooperative action by men struggling to create a world community and other men trying to understand human relations and human societies. Your task, as young men and women, is to prepare yourselves today and tomorrow to be world-minded citizens. Centuries ago in a troubled world the words, . . and now abideth faith, hope, and charity . . challenged and encouraged men to move ahead. You, too, can find direction and encouragement in these words. Have faith in the ideal of freedom that 10 brings with it man's right to be his own master; have faith in the right of all humans to live in peace and security, free from war and want. Have hope based on a deep appreciation and love of your own land and a knowledge of its tremendous potential; have hope that the basic similarities of all men will enable them to minimize their differences and will point the way toward cooperation. Have charity by developing an attitude of tolerance in feeling and opinion born of a deep seated respect for the individual; have charity by keeping abreast of the contemporary world scene as a participant as well as a spectator. Good luck and God bless each member of the Class of 1956. J. WESLEY SOUTHARD, Principal Freeport Jr.-Sr. High School c dminiAtr ation and (guidance Miss Mary Didas, Senior Girls' Counselor, and Miss Alice Davis, 9th grode Counselor. Mr. C. Overton Tremper, Senior Boys' Counselor and Assistant Principal. Mr. John Hesse, 7th and 8th grade Counselor and Assistant Principal. In the hands of the GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT has been placed the task of preparing students for the future. To accomplish this, the Guidance De partment has aimed at assisting the student in deciding upon a career and then coordinating his extracurricular activities in accordance with his field of interest. Through the efforts of the guidance counselors, a series of aptitude tests have been provided to help students decide upon a career. In a personal interview with one of the counselors, students learn of their abilities and may thus plan a program of study with their future in mind. Miss Alice Davis and Mr. John Hesse advise junior high students on their schedules and the extracurricular activities available to them. Miss Mary Didas and Mr. C. Overton Tremper attend to the needs of senior high boys and girls by advising them on programs of study to meet the requirements in their fields of interest, colleges which would meet their particular needs, scholarships for college, and available jobs for high school graduates. We owe our advisors a debt of gratitude for the interest they show in us and the advice and encduragement they so readily offer. 11 S5etircme«t MISS HARRIET CHURCH In June, 1956, someone, other than we seniors, will be saying goodbye to Freeport High School. MISS HARRIET CHURCH of the Home Economics Department and a member of the Freeport school system for thirty-five years, will leave us at that time. Miss Church, a native of High Falls, New York, was graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Albany State Teachers College. For several years she was chairman of the Home Economics Department in the Junior-Senior High School, and has been the organizer and director of the cafeteria departments in five Freeport public schools. Proving the old adage that a busy person will always find time to take on more tasks, Miss Church is a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and Director of both the Needlework Guild and the Community Concert. She is also very interested in collecting antiques and in reading. We know that she will soon find herself so immersed in community affairs that she will find little time to miss us. Both the students and faculty of F.H.S. wish Miss Church the best of luck and good health and hope the future will bring her only happiness. 12 SPECIAL FACULTY I First Row. left to right: Mr. William Ashley. EXECUTIVE SUITE Our General Organization is composed of two bodies. The first and most important is the EXECUTIVE COUNCIL which is made up of elected student officers from the junior and senior classes, faculty members, and our principal, Mr. Southard. The function of this group is to manage and supervise all financial affairs of the G.O. and to budget its funds so that each G.O. sponsored the clubs efficiently. Mr. Henry Chemnitz is in charge of the other section called the G.O. COUNCIL. Each G.O. sponsored club elects a representative who, along with the six elected officers, helps to conduct and direct all student affairs and all matters pertinent to our General Organization. G.O. FINANCIAL WIZARDS Both junior and senior high students kept well-informed by reading the ' FlasHingS ' which were handed out by their competent homeroom managers during the past year. These diligent workers, representatives of the General Organization, were confronted at the beginning of the school year with the tedious task of collecting the ever-needed money for G.O. tickets and prodding debtors to keep up payments. Supervised by Mr. Henry Chemnitz, the JUNIOR and SENIOR HOMEROOM MANAGERS did an excellent job of supporting their G.O. and certainly deserve an ovation. There was a marvelous response from the student body, and a permanent organi- zation was formed under the auspices of Mrs. Phebe Schilling. Officers were elected, and the club chose for its name Leo F. Gib-lyn in honor of the president of our Board of Education. The past year has been one of importance to this young club, and all signs point to its future success. 83 SENIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Front Row, left to right: J. Goldsmith: E. Joyce: C. JUNIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY CREAM OF THE CROP Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership are the four factors which students chosen for the NATIONAL JUNIOR AND SENIOR HONOR SOCIETIES were judged upon. As each eighth and ninth grader ascended the stage stairway to become inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, he also climbed the first ladder to future success. As a full-fledged member under the guidance of Miss Alice Davis, each member achieved many satisfactory goals of which the society was proud. There were many beaming faces accompanied by wildly thumping hearts during the National Senior Honor Society inductions, which were capably directed by Miss Mary Didas. Those seniors who had maintained the high standards of the organization were now being awarded with the highest honor Freeport High School can bestow upon a student, that of becoming a member of the National Senior Honor Society. These PUBLIC ADDRESS ANNOUNCERS kept us well informed by reading the announcements for the day. Besides the ordinary, everyday notices, special feature attractions such as singing and poetry were added, making interesting and informative listening. READY, WILLING, AND ABLE The organization in our school called the JUNIOR RED CROSS has done outstanding deeds for the needy people all over the world. Everyone remembers the student-faculty basketball game played in our gym. That game was sponsored by the Red Cross, and the proceeds were given to a worthy cause. Collections made in the homerooms and membership drives also aided the Red Cross in its beneficial aims. Miss Lilah Cushman and Miss Florence Clark were the faculty advisors who guided the club along a well-chosen path of service. KEY CLUB FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Hohlfelder. Treasurer; J. KEY CLUB During an assembly this past year, the student body was told of a new club to be organized in Freeport High School. The KEY CLUB, with Mr. Foster Hoff acting as faculty advisor, was limited in membership to boys who were chosen on the basis of leadership and participation in community activities. Although the club was without any past experiences to guide it, it moved smoothly and successfully and showed great promise for the future. 85 SWING AND SWAY G.O. dances were the backbone of Freeport's social life, and if it hadn't been for our energetic and creative SENIOR DANCE COMMITTEE supervised by Mr. Victor Kirsch, we would never have the fond remembrances about which we are now talking. Poems and posters, decorations and bands were all part of the preparations made by the committee to present better dances in our high school gym. The glorious times we had at those dances will never be forgotten. JUNIOR DANCE COMMITTEE FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: K. Provenzano: E. Feinsilber; C. Bernstein: S. Poulos. Secretary: S. Everett, G.O. The TENNIS CLUB, coached by Mr. Russell Terry, introduced the fundamental steps of tennis to those students interested in learning how to play this ever-popular game. All the members of the club will undoubtedly remember the good times they had playing tennis and simultaneously learning good sportsmanship. Even though there were times when chasing balls and the long walk home made one quite weary, it was a worthwhile diversion. SENIOR DANCE COMMITTEE FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Nathan; G. Credit was due to those members of the JUNIOR DANCE COMMITTEE, who, under the guidance of Mr. Clarence Hoener, made all arrangements for dances. They transformed the gym to fit their themes and took care of all the means of advertisement, including posters and poems. All of them certainly deserve praise and recognition for their fine work. WE WISH TO PRESENT Remember the talent packed assemblies we saw this year? Each one was more interesting than the other. One outstanding assembly, the Steeple Jacks , proved to be both entertaining and educational. Under the guidance of Miss Claudia Buck-ovich and Mrs. Rosamond Javorsky, the SENIOR ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE and the JUNIOR ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE helped to select the most outstanding acts for each assembly and took charge of introducing the performers to us. The members of both groups received awards for their services at the annual spring awards assembly. ARTISTS AND MODELS As one of our newest additions to extracurricular activities, the 7TH GRADE ART CLUB, supervised by Mr. William Bowne, has made tremendous achievements in the field of art. The 7th graders who made up the club have developed their artistic ability during the past year, and at the same time have created many gay pictures which have helped to brighten the halls in Freeport High School. They will all be remembered by us for their congenial smiles and helping ways. SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE COURTESY COMMITTEES FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Ringer; V. Cordes: S. Dean; A. Rasmussen; R. AT YOUR SERVICE At all school functions one always saw the SENIOR USHERS at work collecting tickets, handing out programs, and directing people to their seats. Though the jobs of these sophomore girls were tedious ones, their work was always done with eager willingness. Under the direction of Miss Doris Nickerson and Miss Maud Constable. the girls did, as usual, excellent work this past year and certainly deserve recognition for their accomplishments. COURTESY PERSONIFIED At any period during the day, you would find the stairs and halls in the Grove Street Annex in an orderly manner, thanks to the members of the 7TH AND 8TH GRADE COURTESY COMMITTEE. These dependable students were stationed at various intervals in the school to guide the flowing traffic to its destination. Under the diligent guidance of Miss Esther Brown, safe-conduct and orderliness reigned throughout the year in Freeport Junior High School. KEEN COMPETITORS When passing by the Apartment at noontime on Tuesdays and Thursdays, one would probably have heard and seen a group of keen competitors, each diligently doing his best to outwit his opponent. Chess is a fascinating game to watch and to play, as the members of the CHESS CLUB, coached by Mr. Foster Hoff, will undoubtedly tell you. Even though there was no interschool competition for the club this year, the members did extremely well in keeping up their spirits and high scores. SCIENCE CLUB STANDING: H. Schulsirsger, President. FUTURE EINSTEINS On Mondays at 3:15 Mr. Robert Ely and a group of boys from Freeport High School got together in Room 120 and began the SLIDE RULE CLUB meeting. The purpose of this organization was to better acquaint students with the operation and application of the Log-Log-Deci-Trig-Slide Rule. This experience will be of great benefit to the boys, for most of them plan to attend engineering colleges, where a student is lost without a knowledge of slide rules. If any help was needed in locating a certain book a LIBRARY CLUB member was always near to aid in the futile search. This was the kind of service one always found when using the library. Miss Mary McIntosh, the new librarian, did an excellent job of establishing a genial atmosphere in the library and directing the Library Club. KITCHEN KAPERS To promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of homemaking; to further interest in home economics; to better family life, creative leadership, and wholesome recreation; and lastly, to establish international good will were the high ideals held by both the JUNIOR and SENIOR FUTURE HOMEMAKERS of AMERICA. These groups were supervised by Miss Salvatrice Cottone and Mrs. Alma Rowley respectively. After all their endless work and fun was over, the members were rewarded by the amount of points they earned during the year. JUNIOR FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA FRONT ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: J. We hope we have accomplished our aim. Many long hours went into the making of this book, but we regret none of them. Along with the toil and hard work, we had a great deal of fun. Each staff member did his or her utmost to make every section a credit to the annual. The junior trainees, while not responsible for any particular section, aided the senior members and did many of the tedious duties. We sincerely hope in future years the Voyageur will prove a source of pleasure to those alumni who browse through its pages. MRS. F. It has a long list of firsts to its credit, including the spectacular performance it put on at the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this past year. Even more impressive to the student body were such events as the band's playing at football games, pep assemblies, concerts, and at graduation ceremonies. After long, tiring hours of practicing and marching, the band went through its routines perfectly regardless of hindrances such as weather. This year's Freeport-Baldwin football game, which was played during a snowstorm, was an excellent example of the desire of the entire band to do a better than average job. When complimenting the band, we cannot help but to include Dr. J. Maynard Wettlaufer in our congratulations, as he is responsible for the magnificent achievements of the band. 96 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL FRONT ROW. LEFT TO RIGHT: C. Wells. Secretary: D. Giordano. The young musicians who made up the orchestra this year displayed their talents in Junior High Assemblies and the Sunday Afternoon Concerts. The band showed great promise of becoming another colossal Senior Band when it received a great ovation as they played in the Memorial Day Parade. Oh, those rehearsals! ive you heard? Wonderful 101 This year Freeport undertook a new project which proved to be one of th£ most successful school events in many years. Under the direction of Miss Doris Nickerson, Freeport High School played host to two foreign delegates from the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE Annual Youth Project. Brought here as a result of competition in their home countries, the delegates spent three months in the U. S. as the guests of various American families. Inge Stoustrup of Denmark and Hee Joon Park of Korea were guests in the homes of Ellen Mayer and Peter Erwin respectively. They attended classes of their own choice, participated in extra-curricular activities, and most important, got a first-hand view of American life. We in F.H.S. enjoyed and profited from the stay of these two students. It is our hope that they found their visit here interesting and enlightening. As their stop in Freeport was their first in the United States, we hope that we formed as wonderful and lasting a first impression on Inge and Hee Joon as they did on us. 102 103 Front Row, left to right: C. P. iri6 cAthietic cAddociation THE GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION which is directed by Miss Dorothy Clark, serves to provide the girls in senior high school with a varied sports program. The main objectives of the organization are to foster such principles as good sportsmanship, leadership, and a spirit of cooperation. The girls are presented with awards for their participation by means of a point system which recognizes such accomplishments as superior skill, ability to officiate at games, management of equipment, and consistent attendance. Through this point system the members can earn four awards which include the class numeral, a shield, the school letter, and finally the gold key for which 600 points are required. The top award is presented each year to the senior girls with the highest number of points. The top senior's name is engraved on a gold plaque while the next two receive special certificates of honor. The Girls’ Athletic Association also sponsors an annual assembly and banquet at which the awards are formally presented. THE SKY'S THE LIMIT These senior girls have been distinguished by having acquired the highest number of points of all of the participants in the Girls' Athletic Association in Freeport. They have proven their skill and leadership through active competition in four sports in each of their freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. They have consistently been among the outstanding members of all the varied sports and have continually exemplified all the principles for which the Girls' Athletic Association stands. The top three girls are further honored by the presentation of special certificates while the highest pointholder's name is engraved on a gold plaque. WOMEN IN WHITE At the head of every gym class is an efficient and industrious STUDENT LEADER whose trademark has become the familiar white gym suit. Under the direction of our F.H.S. gym teachers, Miss Dorothy Clark and Mrs. Carole Cohen, these girls instruct all the gym classes in exercises and precision marching that develop grace and co-ordination. Student leaders are chosen on the basis of natural ability, competence, and responsibility. Tryouts are held each spring, and there is sharp competition for the final selection of the girls who will replace the graduating student leaders. The results of the tryouts are announced amid the suspenseful hush at the G.A.A. spring banquet. The girls chosen are invariably conscientious and deserve much credit for all the effort they put into their work. Front Row, left to right: G. Avy: C. Wiener: G. Appel: C. Wells: S. Schlegel; J. WHAT A RACQUET! Believe it or not, if you visited the gym on any Tuesday or Thursday during the fall sports season, you would see birds flying about. Don't get excited! Freeport High hasn't opened a wildlife sanctuary. It would only be the BADMINTON TEAM capably directed by Mrs. Carole Cohen. Badminton, a very competitive sport requiring skill, accuracy, and stamina, had its final Honor Team chosen by means of an elimination tournament. This year's team came in second, registering decisive wins over Baldwin and Wantagh and being narrowly edged out by Mepham. Their success on Honor Team Day was no surprise to Mrs. Cohen who had been satisfied with their advancement all season. REACHING THEIR GOAL Shortly after the ominous sound of the back to school bell had been sounded, the girls' HOCKEY TEAM, ably directed by Miss Dorothy Clark, made their annual invasion of the Raynor Street Field. Each Monday and Wednesday the girls armed with their hockey sticks, practiced to perfection their action-packed game. As the season wore on, the team proved to be formidable as all their worthy opponents soon discovered. The season was climaxed by the Honor Team Playday at which our best players competed against other topnotch teams on Long Island. In this sport, as always, the girls played with the good-sportmanship, skill, and enthusiasm characteristic of Freeport High School girls. INJUN FUN Having retired their bows and arrows until next season, the girls' ARCHERY TEAM, which was ably coached by Mrs. Carole Cohen, can look back with pride over another successful season. Each Monday and Wednesday, the girls dressed in their red gym suits and armed with bows and arrows, traveled to Raynor Street Field in order to practice. The bewildered neighbors all ran for cover and prepared for a full-scale Indian invasion. On Honor Team Day, the girls' diligent practice paid dividends with a fine showing against the other six Long Island schools in competition. Front Row: B. Albert: J. Nigro; C. Phillips. Albert RED DEVIL VOLLEY VOLLEYBALL, one of the most popular of all the girls sports, was besieged this year with a new high of one hundred and ninety-one girls trying out for the teams. Mrs. Carole Cohen found narrowing down the final class and honor teams a really difficult task in light of all the excellent material available. However, her choice proved to be wise as the Freeport Honor Team shackled all opposition on Honor Team Day at Rockville Center and emerged victoriously over the four other competing teams: Baldwin, Southside, Oceanside, and Malverne. THE STRIKEOUT STORY It is certain that none of the girls on Freeport's BOWLING TEAM will ever be able to forget the mad rush for the 3:25 bus to the bowling alleys each Wednesday during the season. Apparently the girls were still hustling when they got to the alleys because Freeport came up with an exceptionally talented team this year. They happily presented their coach, Miss Dorothy Clark, with decisive wins over every team they faced including Ocean-side, Mepham, Baldwin, and Lawrence. On Honor Team Day they again proved their skill by coming in second in competition with twelve teams. These girls really deserve congratulations for a fine season. Kneeling: C. Niles. The group was divided into twelve teams which were each captained by a senior who was responsible for teaching her group the basic shots and guarding techniques. The sophomore, junior, and senior teams were invited to Ocean-side and Mepham to compete with their respective teams. On both these occasions all the Freeport teams were regarded with a qreat deal of respect by their opponents, although the junior team proved most successful. On Honor Team Day they finished their season by placing second. This sportsmanship and teamplay showed them to be one of the outstanding teams in the tournament. Capt. G. It happens every spring. . . At least Miss Dorothy Clark, the coach of the SOFTBALL TEAM, wished that it would. Although ‘he long tramps to Raynor Street Field were not as numerous as usual, the girls overcame the handicap of the shortened season and surprised everyone, including themselves, by beating every team they faced on Honor Team Day at Mal-verne and bringing home a first place. They polished off their first two opponents, Oceanside and Wantagh, quite readily, but the situation was a little more tense in their last game with Mepham whom they finally overcame in the last inning! Left to right: S. Amitin; S. Gulit; G. Appel: J. Yarrow; K. Canapary. PADDLING ALONG The TABLE TENNIS season began with a ladder tournament in which all the girls familiarized themselves with the techniques and fine points of a doubles game. After the ladder tournament had been finished and each girl, patiently guided by Miss Dorothy Clark, had eliminated the major faults in her game, the singles tournament was begun. The top five winners of this tournament were chosen to play on the Honor Team. This group traveled to Mepham on Honor Team Day and placed second only to the home team, defeating four other teams; Oceanside, Malverne, Lawrence, and Wantagh. Capt. G. We will always remember them fondly whenever we look back on high school pep assemblies and football and basketball games. This year, with the addition of the new boy cheerleaders, the squad has been especially effective. The cheerleader's inexhaustible spirit and enthusiasm through the many rains and snows at the fall games has remained a continual source of amazement to the student body. Furthermore, everyone will certainly agree that they are more than a little bit responsible for the fine showing of our teams this year. The cheerleaders, one of the most industrious and hardworking groups in the whole school, certainly deserve one of their own cheers! Are you ready, let's go. Front Row. left to right: F. O'Brien: D. TRIPLE-A TERRORS After Coach Bill Ashley had finished giving the VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM his pep talk preceding the Baldwin game, the players knew they had to win. When they trotted out onto the snow-covered gridiron and heard the cheers of the Freeport student body, there was no doubt in their minds that the Raynor Trophy would spend the winter in Freeport. As soon as the Red Devils got the ball, they marched quickly up the field for a touchdown. Baldwin never even got started, and was shut out 21-0. Lopsided scores like the 45-6 romp over Mepham show the scoring power of Freeport's backfield — Bird, Hannington, Smith, and Nathan. The hard-charging linemen held the opposition to an average of less than one touchdown per game, stopping Hempstead, Baldwin, and Mineola without a point. High-scoring backs Don Hannington and George Bird made NEWSDAY'S Nassau All-Scholastic first team. The players followed this sound advice, winning five of their eight games without giving up a single point. However, they couldn't shut out every opponent, and the JV FOOTBALL TEAM wound up with a creditable 6-2 record. This record is particularly remarkable because the JV players often worked out with the Varsity team and therefore did not have ample opportunity to practice as a unit. When these boys move up to Varsity next year, the rest of the league is going to find a touchdown against Freeport a rare thing indeed. JAYVEE FOOTBALL Front Row. left to right: J. Kruger; T. There is no other sport that leaves the participants so completely exhausted at the finish as does crosscountry. A crosscountry runner must be prepared to struggle up steep hills and splash through ankle-deep mud when he feels like lying down and dying. This year the largest group of runners in Freeport's history were so successful at exhausting themselves that they were able to run up a seven-and-two record. Led by lettermen Tyler Gray, Ed Strecker, and Fran O Brien, Coach Bob Millers harriers left most of the other teams eating their dust while Freeport placed third in the SSAL finals. 1955 also marked the debut of Steve Cleary and Jim Tucker, the freshman flashes who promise to make Freeport a threat for many years to come. The leaders devote five periods a week helping to run the large gym classes. They lead exercises, referee games, and run the decathlon tests given to each boy annually. In addition, the leaders meet twice a week after school for their own recreation. Every third year they give a fascinating exhibition of gymnastics. A Mineola jump shot with six seconds left robbed Freeport of a major upset by only two points, 75-73. In that game, as in many others, George Bird was our high scorer, this time with 32 points. Dick Lewis, Alan Ritter, and Jon Nelson often broke into double figures, while Nelson teamed up with ’Gook Elfreich and Captain Pete Erwin to do most of the work under the boards. Vince Zuaio. with only three years as wrestling coach, produced a team that took third place in the South Shore Section I championships. This season also saw the start of a junior high wrestling squad coached by Mr. John Augustine. Joe Nathan. Freeport's varsity heavyweight, won a Section I championship in his division. The most sensational performance, however, was turned in by Co-captain Sam Boone, who won the Metropolitan Junior AAU I 36 lb. championship against college competition, an almost unheard-of feat. Although the RIFLE TEAM lacks the publicity given the major sports, it has made the best showing of all the winter sports teams. While winning 9 out of 10 matches, the nimrods fired over 900 consistently and once shot a record high of 927. In the county playoffs. Coach Walter Joy’s sharpshooters came within an inch of winning. Although Co-captains Bill Doremus and Jim Flint are graduating. the other marksmen will return to make us a good bet for the 1957 title. RIFLE TEAM Left to right: P. Harris: P. Weed: P. Thompson: J. BIG STICK POLICY Ever since lacrosse was introduced at Freeport, Bill Ashley's LACROSSE TEAM has consistently fought its way near the top of the Metropolitan Lacrosse League. 1955 was no exception. The team swept through a rugged 10-game schedule to take second place, losing only to Sewanhaka, the country's top high school lacrosse team. Freeport's attack, sparked by Frank Kiernan, Cliff Smith, and Jim Packenham, provided the scoring punch for such victories as the 15-1 romp over Garden City. Fine defense work by Art Andrews, Joe Nathan, and goalie Rocky Clark made the opposition sweat and fight for every goal they scored. Attack man Frank Kiernan walked off with a berth on the Metropolitan All-Scholastic Lacrosse squad. 1955's JV squad showed plenty of talent to provide a championship team in the future. WAIT 'TIL LAST YEAR When the 1955 BASEBALL TEAM got off to a flying start by sweeping the first six non-league games, it looked as if Coach Winston Tuthill's boys were going to win their first championship. However, league competition was tougher, and the team just missed the league title while running up an overall record of l4-and-7. The squad showed exceptional spirit throughout the season, playing every game right down to the wire. An example of the team's fighting spirit was the non-league night game with Baldwin at the Stadium before more than a thousand fans. A tight battle was waged for nine innings before George Bird blasted a home run to give the Freeporters a 2-1 victory. Captain George Emma was the big man with the stick, taking the league batting title with a .352 average. Pitching ace Charlie Dawson turned in some of the best performances in the league. The JV, coached by Joe Glacken, finished with a spectacular l2-and-4 season's record. Largely responsible for the team's success were the co-captains, Dick Coons and Dave Cleary. Their leadership built up the winning spirit necessary for a winning team. Any member of the squad will testify that Coons' workouts got the runners into condition quickly. Other big guns in point scoring were Mike Mortak. 440 yard run; Dick Winter, mile; Ed Strecker, pole vault; and Mike Humphreys, hurdles.
