Trustee Dr. E. Freeman Miller, V. Pres. Clifton B. Smith, Sup't. of Schools Dr. John W. Dodd, Pres. Leo F. Giblyn, Sup't. of Buildings Walter C. Hawkins, Trustee Harold E. Pearson, Trustee Hugh Erwin, School District Clerk John T. Cotter, Jr. Board of Education TO THE CLASS OF 1954 . . . Another year has passed into history and once again we are called upon to address a graduating class of Freeport High School. This year’s theme, Wheels, was chosen, no doubt, after a great deal of deliberation and indicates a far-sighted and deep thinking group of young people. The Wheel symbolizes motion—and nothing in the memory of man has made a greater contribution toward world progress. We view the high school as the hub or the basis of secondary education from which each of you will select a spoke or avenue of endeavor. Your chosen field will then terminate at the rim where you, as the citizens of tomorrow, again will join together to form one united effort toward the strengthening of democracy and the furthering of world peace. It is up to each one of you to make the Wheel roll smoothly by creating good will among your fellow men by your tolerance and fair play. That your future be abounding in success and happiness is the most earnest wish of the Board of Education. Leo F. Giblyn President Mr. Giblyn and members of fhe Board at the Bayview Avenue cornerstone laying. 8

Superintendent of Schools GREETINGS TO THE CLASS OF '54 Congratulations on a job well done in the classroom, in extra-curricular activities, and in the development of personal competence and strength of character. You have participated in every phase of high school living with enthusiasm and purpose, and have established an outstanding record in scholarship, athletics, music and leadership. John Masefield once wrote The days that make us happy make us wise. I hope each one of you has found some measure of both happiness and wisdom here. I hope each one of you will carry in your heart and mind the best we have been able to teach you by precept and example, for even the best is none too good if you are to meet the challenge and responsibilities of your generation. There is an old saying .... Put your shoulder to the wheel, which implies that a John W. Dodd and his secretary, Mrs. June Dunnet. great height of accomplishment is only attained through sustained individual effort. Hard work has cleared our forests, driven the plows, spanned our rivers; it has also built our democratic republican form of government, and established freedom of religion, a system of free public schools, and free enterprise. We are not put into this world to sit, nor even just to know, but to act. This objective becomes increasingly difficult as you leave high school and enter an adult world. May the physical and mental health, the habit of cooperative effort and high ideals of attainment practiced in F.H.S. give you the urge, the strength, and the discernment to put your shoulder to the wheel of life, that for you it may turn forward in the way of true success—personal, material and spiritual. Only as you each labor for the right, will communities and our nation realize the American dream of democratic leadership. Congratulations and best wishes to a fine class—the Class of 1954. JOHN W. DODD Superintendent of Schools 9
