Congratulations to the Class of 1953 In centuries past, the art of celestial navigation provided daring seamen with guides necessary to permit expeditions to sail uncharted seas. The constancy of the stars in the Heavens increased the faith and hope of many would-be-doubters and allowed men to direct their course and to calculate their position. The desert nomad, the trader of the East leading heavy-laden caravans, the Indian making his way through trackless forests followed the stars that lit the pathways. The quenchless brightness of these heavenly bodies gave to the humblest of men and to royalty alike that comfort and courage which comes from keeping ones sights ever upward. Few graduating -classes from Freeport High School have been forced to face as many challenges as loom before the Class of 1953. War lurks on the horizon. The economic future is uncertain. The freedoms of the American citizen are subjecte3 to supreme tests both from within and without, The everyday dealings among men call for high moral values and hardy physical stamina. Hitch your wagon to a star. As of old the brightness of your star can be the inspiration that urges you onward toward your ultimate goal and the guide post that may well light your road to success. The constancy of your star can bring you happiness and the fulfillment of your ambition. Today's world requires that you strive to be exceptional; that you equip yourself mentally, morally, physically and spiritually to face and solve your problems. The quality of your ambition to meet and conquer your world will be reflected in the ultimate attainment of your goal. Class of 1953, this is your challenge. 1) Hitch your ambition to an ideal. 2) Hitch your wagon to a Star. . Good luck, good fortune and God's blessing always. J. Wesley Southard 12

Greetings to the Class of 1953 I wish I were able to convey to you the thrill that comes to me in speaking in your assemblies, in meeting you at your athletic contests, your school plays, and the pleasure and privilege of greeting you along the high school corridors. As I look at your accomplishments and records, I feel great pride in the present generation of young people. Because of all that the Class of 1953 has signified in character, intellect, and school spirit; of all that has been done to uphold the standards and ideals of Freeport High School through your thoughtful service and diligent effort, it seems appropriate that you should choose the theme — Hitch Your Wagon to a Star , for the 1953 Yearbook. That has been your purpose and your method for four years. Great achievement always comes from striving to attain high ideals. Any student who does not catch the significance of loyal devotion to high ideals has missed the better part of his education. May you continue to hold your standards aloft. That one word — ideals — six letters, tells the story and fixes the objective for educational, social and spiritual endeavor. The important story of mankind has been and always will be one of purposeful creation. Broad horizons, great desires, virile hopes, and big programs constitute the backgrounds and foundations for success. As yet, we have not been able to measure exactly the power of determination, initiative, inventiveness, enthusiasm, will power and loyalty, but we do know that collectively they constitute the vehicle which, coupled with high ideals, carries us as individuals to high places on the road to achievement and worthwhile living. May happiness and all good things worth having be yours and may the training which you have obtained in Freeport High School aid in the attainment of your ambitions. Best wishes for success in every endeavor. Superintendent of Schools 11

Administration and Guidance Whether you're a bewildered seventh grader confronted with questions of your new high school life or a hopeful senior planning to attend college, the guidance department is always willing to help solve your problems. Entering these offices with their cozy home-like atmospheres, students feel completely at ease to discuss their problems. Although the guidance department is concerned with adjusting pupils to high school life, it is especially interested in guiding the students in choosing their future careers. Under the supervision of Miss Alice V. Davis and Mr. John Hesse, junior high school boys and girls become acquainted with the curriculum of F. H. S. When sophomores, these students partici- pate in a series of aptitude and preference tests, the results of which aid greatly in determining their future vocation. Guided by the sincere and warm personality of Miss Mary Didas and the untiring efforts of Mr. C. Overton Tremper, senior high students receive advice on possible careers and information regarding colleges and employment. As we, the class of '53 realize the debt we owe to our advisors who have truly shown us how to Hitch Our Wagon to a Star , we offer them our appreciation and thanks. 13
