GREETINGS TQ THE CLASS UF 195B AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE YEARBOOK STAFF HE theme of this 1952 Yearbook. “Down on the Farm.” brings to mind those pioneer days of long ago when most Americans were farmers and the life of the people was a rural life. In those days, man defied nature and tamed it. He defied any force which interfered with liberty or with freedom. A real pioneer did not bow his head or bend his knee except in reverence to God or in loving care of his family. Nor did he compromise an issue or use appeasement as a device for temporary safety. Never did he give up his firm belief that personal liberty was not only his right, but also his most valued possession. Those early ideals have crystallized into the American Way of Life. In America today, we are still counting kindness, love and consideration for others among our virtues and we are still actuated in our life procedure by the service ideal. Our underlying philosophy is still based on the right of free men and their self-created institutions. Our most valued national leadership through the years has been by men of pioneer caliber. Whatever true progress there has been in government, business church and school, has been fostered by outstanding leadership in these various fields. We have been very fortunate here in Freeport High School to have had the guidance for twenty-two years of a man whose ideals and standards have been constantly high. Reared “down on the farm,” in the rural countryside of Ohio, of pioneer stock, and tempered by long years of school experience. Mr. Mansperger has helped to lead Freeport youth to higher and belter accomplishments. His reward is the success of those he has inspired, and his compensation is the inspiration which comes from such a reward. Class of 1952. as you graduate you are on the march with all American pioneers who have come before. Your study and all your splendid effort in your high school course and activities have prepared you to meet the immediate dangers and problems. It has greatly increased your efficiency. You have arrived at the place where there is real work to do, a faith to keep and an ambition to be worthy of your opportunity to be realized. Every one of you is vital in the struggle for better human relationships and happier human relationships. American youth looks beyond immediate situations to a new era just as did the pioneers of colonial times. May you support your faith in the permanence of American ideals and institutions by your best contributions to them. Congratulations to Mr. Mansperger and to the Class of 1952 as you go forth to new horizons which challenge your continuing effort for worthwhile accomplishment. Very best wishes for success in every endeavor. JOHN W. DODD Superintendent of Schools Page eleven

GREETINGS TO THE ELASS OF 1952 FOR each of the twelve years that F have served as president of the Freeport Board of Education, one of the rare privileges has been to extend greetings in behalf of the Board to the graduating class, through the pages of the Voyageur. Class of 1952. your spirit has been wonderful; your accomplishments in scholarship, music, athletics, and in many other fields, have been outstanding; your cooperation in every enterprise—worthwhile. In the years to come, this yearbook will serve as a permanent link between the busy, crowded days of adult life and the memories of your high school career, and as a permanent reminder of the inimitable spirit of F. H. S. May the habit of success which you have established here help you to achieve not only material success, but a happy life of abundant service. May the theme of your yearbook remind you of the inspirational leadership of your former principal, Martin M. Mansperger, who has just retired to a life ‘‘down on the farm. Men of the soil—great or humble-—are characterized by dauntless courage, real sacrifice, humble wisdom, and by a devotion to liberty that nothing can shake, plus unfaltering faith in God. Many of those men who have laid the foundations of our liberty in this great country of ours were reared in a rural environment: the farmer Thomas Jefferson, with his Declaration of Independence, his statutes of Religious Toleration; the farmer Andrew' Jackson, whose fierce Tennessee spirit blazed the way for the development of democratic practices; the farmer Abraham Lincoln, whose gnarled, massive hands told of conflict with the land and forests, and whose grip on the helm of the Ship of State was as firm as on the hoe or ax. Members of the Class of 1952, your future after graduation presents a fair, clean page on which to write a new chapter in the story of your life. No nobler example could guide you than that of these early heroes whose beginnings were down on the farm.” Congratulations and God speed in every worthwhile endeavor. Page ten LEO F. GIBLYN President Board of Education
