Band This year Freeport High School is proud to say that its band has approximately seventy-two members. They are divided into sections-brass, reed, string, and percussion. This band probably owns the largest col- lection of music of any school its size in the state. Mem- bers ofthe band have demonstrated their skill by playing in last year's Music Festival at Boston. and also by play- ing at various school times. Although the band won no honors at the Music Festival last year. they did a good job. They showed sportsmanship and confidence in themselves. Vwfe think this year is going to be a winning year. XVe feel confident of placing first in the small schools. The townspeople have surely helped out a great deal by assisting us with the organization. and we in the band appreciate it. The band, started by Mr. Perry. at first had about thirty members. He has given his time. knowledge. and interest in making the band what it is today. I want to say on behalf of the members of the band that we certainly appreciate what he has done for us. Allan Powers 54 1 CA 7 If ' X12 v I 1 Q Qyx l it- FN ' 2 Acrivmizs qt! Seated: Mrs. Stevenson. Signs of fear and pride give way to grim glances at the score board. Only eight minutes to win. Eight little minutes which seem so long to you, the player. when you've got to make six points in this the Hnal quarter. The whistle. the jump and again the constant pace from one basket to the other. The brightness of the lights stings your eyes. and your nose tingles from breathing so quickly through the mouth. The crowds dull roar repeats and repeats in your ears and above all you remember the coach's worried voice when he gave his final instructions. This is your game. your last in high school. The past four years have been spent mostly on the bench. but now your chance to play has come and you've got to make good. Back and forth. hack and forth. until your pounding legs seem to float. Time becomes endless. but the score board registers six minutes to play and a four point lead by the opponent. Time is called. Slumping to the floor for instructions rests your legs and helps your breathing. The coach's voice is soft and low. his face strained. This is the last chance for victory. your last chance. The whistle. and again the thunder of feet and cries from the crowd block out all sense of reasoning. port Another basket by a team mate. another step nearer your goal. Times flies swiftly, Only seconds remain. Two more points needed to tie their vicious score. Two points which seem so little and yet so big. A rebound is caught. fumbled. and caught again. Strang.ly enough vou're in the open with the ball in your hands. Five-four-three. the crowd begins counting the remaining seconds. This is your last game, your last chance, your last shot. You shoot and the bulzer sounds. Its all over. The gym is quiet. no yelling crowds increase their cry. no players run these halls. Nothing remains but a few strewn candy wrappers and an occasional empty bottle. Silently snow drifts past the windows blotting out all signs of lifei iTake a lcng. last look and leave. for you missed your final basket and your final chance for fame.
