The Clarlon Page Flfteen A WOWI KN S FANCY Mother Ceclle IS leanlng far out her XVIII dow shaklng her rug It IS a small and gaudy lug possesslng as a predomlnatlng feature an lncllnatlon toward shabblness Mother Ceclle has but one rug and she shakes lt out her wlndow evely mornlng The baker ln the shop below IS lncllned to snlff ww hen he hears It begln to flap Partlcu larly as he IS usually taklng down hls front shutters Just when she does lt Well lf you have but one wlndow what are you to do It IS qulte early about seven but the street IS all astlr The blg stores uptown Vlflll not, of course, open for an hour or so yet but down here every grocery store and notlon shop IS openlng up There IS a falnt plnk haze of early mornlng floatlng oxer the clty from the waterfront Later ln the day the sun wlll glare Every fat woman on the stl eet wlll slt on her doorstep and try exhaustlngly to keep her non heedlng offsprlng from playlng tag But now the graylsh bulldlngs are softened by the haze Here and there a wlndow IS llghted by the low sun and wlnks 1tS rosy eye as much as to say Plnk clouds at mornlng Sallors take warnlng The ruff supposedly rld of dust, Mother Ceclle leans her elbows on the slll ready to start her usual mornlng conversatlon wlth Mother Marle across the way They are waltlng for the baker to stop clattellng hlS old fashloned 'wooden shutters and lron bars Mother Marle IS noddlng and Smlllng when Mother Ceclle notlces a strangely out of place young man strolllng down the Slde walk He has a carnatlon ln hls buttonhole sports a swaggel stlck and has a raklsh look about the eyes Mother Ceclle s llp beglns to curl Another crazy swell on a slummlng lark' Another dandy to turn all her Celestes and Antolnettes heads and make them have trouble wlth thelr Plerres and FIZHCOISQS' But Just now thls slngular young man catches her eye He smlles polltely and handsomely and doffs hls hat to thls slack looklng woman leanlng out of a 'vV1I1d0W ln her sweeplng cap Mr Harold Balley IS llke that' Mother Ceclle s eyes almost pop from her head as she watches hlS evtremely well dlessd back recedlng down The Street In a few mlnutes he IS lost to VIGW among store Cl6llxS sweeplng the sldewalks and fat women XVlth baskets Then strangely enough, she suddenly remembers her sweep lng cap She lmmedlately wlthdraws from the wlndow Acloss the way Mother Marle stares and then bangs her wlndow down angrlly It IS a fine mornlng about three days later Let us pop lnto Mother Ceclles shop a few blocks down The Street Nettle, the counter glrl who opens up wlll probably glve a start because she IS standlng wlth one hand ln the peppermlnt Jar You see she vtlll thlnk lt IS Mother Ceclle and ln truth lt IS about tlme she appeared Sure enough' Here she IS Nettle does start and knocks a cracker box from the counter She stoops to plCk It up and when she confronts Mother Ceclle we can see stooplng Mother Ceclle bltes her llpS and sllently goes lnto the back room to dlSpOS6 of her hat and coat Nettle furtlvely closes the metal cover of the Jar, and starts to stralgllten the papers of PIHS ln a tray, a task whlch has been attended to alreadv thls mornlng, wlthout a doubt Mother Ceclle comes out She opens her mouth posslbly to glve some adVlC6 about peppelmlnt eatlng, but exldently thlnks better of It when a cus tomer appears at the door Her expresslon changes from one of gravlty to one of smll lng welcome Good mornlng, Mother Ma Mother Marle stares rather lclly We can see that they have had no mornlng conver satlons of late Mother Marle resents mlss lng these confabs and shows It We can also see that she IS elctremely curlous as to the cause of Mother Ceclles conduct Her fllgld stare IS rather rulned by her Jaw dropnlng and her eyes bulglng out Come to thlnk of lt Mother Ceclle IS enough to make one's Jaw drop Her resemblance to the ' 1 L 1 rv, I I . - l , , L . . .
