The 1971 girls' track team is FRONT: Carrie Hofer, Susan Weier, Glenda Wiens, Cindy Svartoien, Brenda jane Wipf, Pat Gering, Karen Kaus, Marlene I-Iaar, Goertz. BACK: Cindi Plooster, Peggy Kaufman, Skye Susan Waltner, Cecilia Villa, Elsie johnson, Theresa Hein, Colette Dubs, Roberta Graber, Mary Ann Soren- Villa, Loy Laber, Teresa Brucklacher, ,Pam Gering, sen, Teresa Graber, Sheryl Gullickson, Mary Schaeffer, Susan Schamber. SECOND: Student Managers Lynette Penny Kaufman, Colleen Ortman, Suzetta Ensz, and Ruth Wiens and jan Mehlhaf, Cindy Kleinsasser, Barb Uecker, Werner. Nancy Schamber, Donna Munkvold, Cindy Preheim, Three Girls Advance to State Track Meet The Freeman High track girls began their season by attending two practice track meets at Scotland. Mrs. Diede then led her girls to the Cornbelt Conference Track meet at Salem, Tyndall Relays, the regional track meet at Tyndall, Hurley Bulldog Relays, a.nd,to the Springfield Invitational . The girls achieved their winning ways by a daily routine of pushups, situps, hurdlers stance, jumping jacks, windmill, mountain climber, and climbing the rope. Freeman was represented at the state meet in Madison on May 15 by Carrie Hofer-50 yard dash, Theresa Villa-220 yard dash, and Nancy Schamber-440 yard dash and high jump. Nancy also placed third in the state in high jump. This year fourteen girls met the qualifica- tions to letter in track. The girls had to score in a major track meet to receive their letter. Those lettering were Nancy Schamber, Teresa Brucklacher, Elsie johnson, Glenda Wiens, Brenda Goertz, Pam Gering, Marlene I-laar, Cindy Preheim, Susan Schamber, Pat Gering, Sue Weier, Susan Waltner, Penny Kaufman, and Cindy Kleinsasser. Lynette Wieins and jan Mehlhaf were the student managers-.V Nancy Schamber, Theresa Villa, and Carrie Hofer, pictured ABOVE, represented Freeman at the girls state track meet in Madison on May 15, 1971. 116

Band Increases to Ninety-Two Members The FHS BAND, serving as a pep, marching, and concert band, increased to 92 members. Conducting the band for the ninth year was Mrs. Betty Mudder. Majorette Rhonda Stewart led the marching band for the FHS S USD I-lomecomings. Throughout the year the band played as a pep band for wrestling and BB tournaments, and home football and basketball games. An all trombone executive committee voiced the bands major decisions. The officers were: Pres. - Tom Villa, Vice Pres. - Gregg Graber, Sec. -Treas. - jan Mehlhaf, and Student Council- Kelly Mutchelknaus. In concert the band performed at the State Fair, Sept. 45 the Pops Concert, Oct. 25, and the annual Spring Concert. Competing with other Class B schools at the Large Ensemble Contest at Mount Marty College, the band retained a superior for the fourth year. At the Small Ensemble Contest 24 entries com- peted. They brought home 8 superiors, 15 excellents, and 1 good.
