The 1971 boys' track team, coached by Don Diede and As- sistant Coach Wayne Knoll, is del, Tom Villa, Jarvis Hecken- laible, Rick Preheim, Burnell Glanzer. THIRD Student Manager Bob Wollman, Greg Graber, Ted Pidde, Mike Walter, Tim Villa, jerry Ort- man, john Weier. BACK: Mark Gross, jeff Christensen, David Ryken, Bruce Glanzer, Frank Graber. Flyers Set Nine New Track Records The Freeman Flyers track team under Coaches Don Diede and Wayne Knoll completed their most successful season in recent years. Winning three track meets in a strong Class A, they also placed high in all other track meets entered. The Flyers started their Winning streak at the Corn- belt Conference Track Meet in Mitchell. They scored 90 points to the runner-up, Bridgewater, with 54 points. Winning at the conference were: Tom Villa-low hurdles Gregg Graber-discus, Rick Preheim-long jump, Ted 7 Pidde-pole vault, Burnell Glanzer-mile rtm, Lynn Men- del, Jarvis I-leckenlaible, Tom Villa, and Burnell Glanzer-two mile relay, Jerry Ortman-freshmen 100 yard dash. Many other places showed Freeman's depth and made this Win possible. Freeman then traveled to the Centerville Relays and took home two relay trophies and the team trophy over other powerful teams in a strong field. Leading by one point going into the last event Freeman's mile re- lay team beat their challengers to win the meet. Rick Preheim, ABOVE RIGHT, Freeman's long jumping senior, qualified for the state meet by placing first in the Gregg Graber, ABOVE CENTER, represented Freeman at region- the state track meet after successive wins at the confer- Ten Tracksters Qualify for State Meet The regional track meet in Mitchell, third on the list of Freeman's conquests, saw Freeman handily beat their closest challenger to take home a third consecutive team trophy. Qualifying performances for the state track meet were made by Greg Kleinsasser-first in long jump, Tom Villa-first in low hurdles, first in medley relay, second in 880 yard and two mile relays, Burnell Glanzer-first in the mile run, first in medley relay and second in two mile relay, Lynn Mendel- first in medley relay, second in 880 yard and two mile relays, Jarvis I-leckenlaible-first in medley relay, second in 880 yard and two mile relays, Gregg Graber-second in discus and shot put, Ted Pidde-second in pole vault, Brad Christen- sen-second in high hurdles, Joey Villa-second in two mile runs Freeman saw ten men entered in thirteen events. Qualifying for the Saturday night finals were Tom Villa, in the low hurdles. The 880 yard relay, medley relay, and mile relay also qualified. The finals on Saturday found Free- man's medley relay place second only one-tenth of a second from first place and Burnell Glanzer gathered a second place medal in the mile run. This gave Freeman ten points which was a bit disappointing to the track team but still the highest finish of a Freeman team in a state meet. Setting new school records during the year were Tom Villa-low hurdles, Brad Christensen-high hurdles, Joey Villa- two mile run, Burnell Glanzer-mile run, Rick Preheim, Jarvis Heckenlaible, Tom Villa, and Brad Christensen in the 440 relay, Tom Villa, Jarvis I-leckenlaible, Greg Kleinsasser, and Lynn Mendel in the 880 relay, Lynn Mendel, Jarvis Hecken- The 1971 head track coaches, pictured ABOVE, laible, Tom Villa and Burnell Glanzer in the medley relay and are Girls' Track Coach LaVerne Diede and Boys' mile relay.
