FRONT: Terry Walter--alto saxophone and David Schmi- dt--cornet, earned excellent ratings. Receiving an excellent at the contest was the woodwind quin- tet. BELOW: Arlene Kleinsas- ser, Marilyn Wipf, Judy Aman, Mary Preheim, Ardelle Kleinsasser. BELOW: George Villa, David Schmidt, and Ted Hofer compose the cornet trio which received a fair rating. Chosen as a member of All- State Band is Ardelle Kleinsasser--flutist. She attended the band April 10-11 in Watertown and played along with 164 musicians under the dir- ection of Miles johnson of St. Olaf College, North- field, Minnesota.

THIRD: Rita Wipf, Lynn Mendel, Randy Barta, Penny Kaufman, Ted Hofer, George Villa, David Schmidt, Teresa Grab- er, Cindy Kleinsasser, Terry Walter, Dale Aman. SECOND: Mary Ann Sorenson, Judy Mehlhaff, Skye Hein, Theresa Villa, Shana Gullickson, Marlene Haar, jill Kleinsasser. FRONT: Mary Preheim, Rhonda Stewart, jackie Stahl, Tammie Graber, Ardelle Kleinsasser. Not pictured: Tom Villa. The 78 member FHS band, directed by Mrs. Betty Mudder, led the FHS Homecoming Parade and later marched at U. S. D, and Southern for their homecoming parades, October 11 and 18, respectively. Throughout the year the band played at home football and basketball games and pep meetings. Soloists and ensembles attended the Region I Small Ensemble Contest at Vermillion, February 19, and brought back a record amount of superior ratings. They received 9 superior, 9 excellent and a fair rating. The band participated in the Cornbelt Conference Band Festival, March 10 at Marion. Guest conductor was Dr. Harold Krueger from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. The 240 piece band concluded the days festival with an evening concert. Saturday, April 3, the band traveled to the large ensemble contest at Mount Marty College and earned a superior rating for the third consecutive year. A spring concert consisting of the band, mixed chorus, glee clubs, and madrigal climaxed the year's perform- ances. LEFT: Marcia Kaufman, a senior, has led the march- ing band for two years. 57
