THE A TEAM əм NNR ON А The 1982-83 T.V. season was one of frustration for the networks. The viewership across the а- tion fell as more and more people turned to ca- ble and pay T.V. Even, so, CBS once again won the prime time programming as well as the late- night, while ABC dominated the day time pro- gramming. “M A S H”, a CBS work horse, left us this spring with the highest rating ever given any- thing on television. “M A S H”, however, was only third in final overall season standing. The two in front of it were the newsmagazine 60 Min- utes”, followed by the super-sudser Dallas . It was also a dynamic year for mini-series. The Winds of War, The Thorn Birds, and The Blue and the Gray were among the many mini-series that dominated the air time when they were played. The World of Football ... was rocked in the 82-83 season. Midway through the NFL season there was a 57 day strike. After the strike the playoffs saw Cinderella (the Washington Redskins) overrun the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in the Superbowl. A new group, the United States Football League, was formed in the soring. Whether it will survive or not is still up in the air. After compiling one of the best records in МВА history, The Philadelphia 76'ers rolled over the injury riddled Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA tournament final. In baseball the St. Louis Car- dinals won the seven-game world-series by winning two thrilers at home. The Tigers Lance Parrish broke the Ameri- can League record for home runs by a catcher, and Milt Wil- cox brushed with immortality this season by pitching a per- fect game through 26 batters against the Chicago White SOX. In college sports Penn State and Joe Paterno finally won a national championship by beating the then No. 1 Geor- gia (27-23) in the Sugar Bowl. Michigan again lost the Rose Left: Whitey Herzog Bottom Center: checks the ump after a fowl call. Bottom Right: Norm Nixon Bowl this year to UCLA (24-14). In basketball the North Caroli- na Wolfpack won the NCAA title with a stunning 54-52 up- set over Houston and the pow- erful Phi Slamma атта. Deaths this year included longtime Alabama head coach, Bear Bryant, boxing legend, Jack Demsey, and Ko- rean prize fighter, Duk Koo Kim. The Chicken 117 Politics dominated fhe news as usual. Ronald Reagan confinued in his term as President and James Blanchard became те first детосгайс governor in Michigan for at least the last fiffeen years, Terror spread throughout the nation when seven peo- ple died as a result of taking cyanide-laced Extra Strength Tylenol Capsules. The culprit was never caught. The Nucleur Power Plant was Postponed yet again. Right next door. The second space shuffle, the Challenger, made its maiden voyage last spring. The United States Embas- sy in Beirut, Lebanon was bombed in what was the bloodiest attack ever against a U.S. Embassy. Af least 17 Americans were killed. Mike and Cindy McLaugh- lin of Freeland won $100,000 in the Million Dollar Taste Game at McDonalds. They were given the red carpet treatment by the Freeland MeDonalds and later ap- peared on television com- mercials for McDonalds. Saginaw received its first snow storm of the year on the first day of spring. Re- cord high temperatures were set with the tempera- tures in the 60's on Christmas Day. Bob Hope ... celebrated his 80th birthday and Princess Diana came of age а! 21. On the sadder side of things, the past year saw the passing of Henry Fonda, Grace Kelly, John Belushi, and Ingrid Bergman. The Prince and Princess of Wales became parents. Prince William, heir to the throne, was born July 21, 1982. 119 The final M A S H cast (clockwise from top left): William Christopher, Jamie Farr, David Ogden Stiers, Loretta Swit, Alan Es: Alda, Harry Morgan and Mike Farrell. This year we saw the end of a long love, Не return of an'old love, and the beginning of a new love. After 11 years of running, the M A S H series ended. The whole nation said their farewells with tears and toasts to one of the finest T.V. series. Movie goers fell in love with someone (something?) new — E.T.
