А typical street і Еші , А view of Hamburg, ІП This summer I was very privileged і being Freeland’s first exchange student, I can only tell you briefly ||| about this wonderful experience, I first heard about the summer exchange program at the beginning of my junior year, I filled out an appli- 4 ||| cation and after a few anxious weeks I obtained my acceptance, | ||| I left for Germany on June 13 о а chartered flight from Detroit to Hamburg. Along with 45 other exchange students, I spent a night in a youth hotel in Hamburg, Early the next morning we left for the large train station | | where we each got о trains for our different destinations, My destination was Rendsburg, where I met the ШОП Jensens, my German family, for the first time, | | || They were а charming family with four girls and two boys. They had a 50 acre farm on the Kiel Canal, I | UI spent most of my time with Christa and Gesa who are 17 and 16, | || During my stay, I took many trips with the family, Among the places we visited were Kiel, on the Baltic | | Sea, Eutin, the island of Nordstrand, on the North Sea, Husum, Hamburg and others, Among the fondest of my memories was the four day trip I took to Berlin with Crista and another exchange student from Michigan and West Berlin. Berlin is an unusual, fascinating and wonderful city. ||| On ће way back to the United States, we had а three day stay in Amsterdam. While in Amsterdam, I IBN was able to visit the house of Anne Frank, ШІ! I met many interesting people and visited many interesting places. Т е two month time really flew and 4 ШІ! McGreggor, A, Hinkly, W, Beyersdorf, Т, Bailey. 75 Tournaments Prove Successful Our wrestling team enjoyed the most successful season in the young history of Freeland High, Our season was marred only by the loss to strong class A Flint Ainsworth, Only one member of the team will be lost thru graduation (Dan Ames 165 Ib.) so we are looking forward to a great season next year, We had 30 boys participating in wrestling, losing 3 for the season with physical injuries, I feel the success of these boys was made possible largely through their tremendous sense of pride and deter- mination to excel, Coach Smits 76 Our basketball team succeeded in bringing home our first Varsity trophy, defeating Hemlock, Bullock Creek, and Birch Run in the Christ- mas Tournament at Bullock Creek, Bobby Garcia and John Smith were named two of the most outstanding players of the Christmas Tournament and later were named by the Midland Daily News to the All-Area second team, Fred Hoewe, Gary Wiltse, Don Mielke, and Pat Terrian placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively in the regional tour- nament to qualify for the state matches, This matman shows one way to beat an opponent, In Memoriam He was the young man with the young family who lived in the great white house. He was a man who loved his country and served it almost all his life. In the South Pacific, in Congress, in the great office of the Presidency. He was a vigorous, exciting man who loved the rough and tumble of political challenge. He was a vibrant man who loved the great thundering crowds of noisy cities. A thoughtful man who loved the solitude of the windswept coasts of his native New England. He was a man of great dedication who accepted the responsibilities and awesome decisions of his office with honor, with courage. He was a devoted man who deeply loved his family. A just man who asked God's help and guidance to keep the peace in a troubled world. He was a man of warmth, of wit, of wisdom. He was the young President we all felt we knew so well. The world knew John Fitzgerald Kennedy, too. Go When free men everywhere remember him they honor us. And we are proud. VIN U 2271 PEPE få PG ER с m 50 o S o d = оз” = oq 5 ae © ES © F.H.S.
